Best Trilogy by a Major Talent
"The Reluctant Swordsman" (Seventh Sword, Book 1)introduces the characters and world/universe the author continues with in "The Coming of Wisdom" (Seventh Sword, Book 2)and "The Destiny of the Sword" (Seventh Sword, Book 3). This is a brilliant trilogy which remains at the top of Dave Duncan's impressive body of work. The characters remind me of Dungeons and Dragons Roll Playing Games (D&D ...

Excellent Adult Fiction
I put off reading this book for a long time, by the time I finally did read it I was glad I did. Dave Duncan crafts the most unique and interesting fantasy world I have ever experienced. It is based mostly on one premise, how the lack of something (I won't say what that something is) can change how a world/culture developes. The cultures and world is amazing. The characters compelling, the ...

Good Hellboy, Kick some A
This is not only a great story, but it also has amazing art. The artist who worked on this book did an amazing job that definitely impressed me. Being a fan of Mike's art work, I can sometimes me skeptical of other people that pick up the torch and illustrate his books. The art is amazing and I recommend it to any fan of Hellboy.

superb historical fantasy
Maestro Nostradamus is many things; he is physician to the Venetian doge, a clairvoyant, an astrologist, and a spell weaver. His reputation is so great that he and his apprentice Alfeo Zeno live in grandeur on the top floor of the Mansion of Alvise Barbolano. Zuanbattista Sanudo and his wife Eva Morosini come to Nostradamus to ask him to use his clairvoyance skills to locate their missing ...

Highly recommended for all fantasy fans
Dave Duncan did it again. He created a new unique world, which is weird and cool, even though physically impossible, as he himself admits in the appendix to the book. He brought to life monsters, heroes and bloodlords... and you can forget about your night sleep until after you close the last page. For the fans of the previous works by Duncan I would say only that in my opinion "Mother of ...

Great Interviews, But Not What I Expected
This book gets an easy four stars just for the wealth of content about the methods and backgrounds of the featured artists, and I would definitely recommend it on that basis. But based on the original solicitation prior to its release, I had expected a book with lots of images of physical working spaces. Instead, there's just one image of each artist's studio, and some of those pictures aren't ...

Great Series
Let me start out with the fact that I've read this entire series at least 5 times. It is one of the most imaginatively entertaining series I have ever read. You just don't want to put these books down. The characters and engrossing and well developed. The plot moves quickly with well paced action and neither are over thought or cliche. I can't rate this series high enough.

A Balanced Approach
Goes beyond the simplistic notion of shallow forgiveness into the real work of repentance and reconciliation. Squares the responsibility between both spouses instead of placing an unfair burden on the spouse who has been betrayed to do all the work necessary for restoration of the relationship.

Will Make You A Duncan Fan
This book was wonderful. I picked it up on a recommendation from a good source - and even bumped it to the top of my reading list - and by was I glad that I did. It is written more or less feeling like historical fiction of a time like The Three Musketeers. Actually a lot of how this book was done reminded me of that. A School full of misfits and boys that would end up in a gutter long ...

The Case of the Poisoned Cup
The Alchemist's Apprentice (2007) is a historical fantasy. Maestro Filippo Nostradamus, nephew of Michel Nostradamus, is an astrologer, clairvoyant and alchemist as well as the best physician in Venice. His apprentice and protector is Alfeo Zeno, a young and impoverished nobleman. The Maestro is a long-standing friend of the Doge and is also his personal physician. In this novel, a tarot ...

Lord of the Fire Lands - Another wonderful tale!
"Lord of the Fire Lands" is another exceptional example of superior fantasy writing by author, Dave Duncan. After finishing his first "Tale of the King's Blades" in "The Gilded Chain," it seemed as though that novel would be a hard one to follow but Dave Duncan deftly handles that in writing this thoroughly absorbing and compelling story. The only downside to this story is the beginning in ...

You can't stop this guy!!
This book provided an opportunity for the princess to be fleshed out and in the process it manages to tell a darn good story AGIAN!! I feel lucky that I found David Duncan. I have read 5 of his books and I haven't hit a dud yet. Wonderful character development and it was great to see the events from the previous two books at another angle. He even manages to wrap up the contradictory ending ...

Another exciting adventure with the King's Blades
Duncan's "The Gilded Chain" is one of my favorite books of all time, and while the other two books in that Tales of the King's Blades trilogy were both quite endearing, no character was as enchanting as the original Blade, Durendal, and thus they did not quite measure up, while still managing to be fantastic reads on their own. "Paragon Lost" however, introduces us to the delightful Beaumont and ...

Stricken Field continues the excellence
Reviews are usually produced by a strong reaction to a book, either positive or negative, so to say that "The Stricken Field" is a powerful book in a dynamic series is still to state the obvious. It would be likewise obvious to mention that "Stricken Field" is actually part of a series, except that it might not be obvious that it is actually Book 7. Dave Duncan began this tale in the 4-book ...

Better than most authors, but not his best
Just finished this book last evening around 3am. It was one of those books where once I got into the culmination I couldn't bring myself to put it down to finish the following evening. I think I've read everything Duncan has ever printed, starting with the Reluctant Swordsman, and followed by the Great Game, and the two Man of His Word/Magic Casement series, and then the Kings Blades and Kings ...
