The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Eastern North America60 reviews
David Allen Sibley, Rick Cech

Knopf, 2003

Excellent Field Guide for Young Birdwatchers
My Uncle, G. Max White, gave my son a hand-crafted peanut butter feeder that he'd made and stained. He explained to his great-nephew, in specific detail, the kinds of birds he would start to see. We hung the feeder outside my son's window and within three days the birds started to arrive. My son was elated! We decided to add a birdseed feeder, a woodpecker feeder, a finch feeder, and a ...

Old Testament Survey: The Message, Form, and Background of the Old Testament8 reviews
William Sanford LA Sor, David Allan Hubbard, ...

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1996

Great OT basic
Without blabbering on about the evangelical theological leaning of each chapter I thought I'd write an actual review of this book rather than attempt to debate the authors' theology. First off, the book is a great survey. It is a bit short at times and a bit simplistic around some of the prophets (the sections on Jonah and Haggai for example are far too basic) but it is always fair and contains ...

Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity454 reviews
David Allen

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2002

What will you get done?
I have studied various organizational and time management methods for 20 years. I have found nothing that compares to the liberty and effectiveness of this method. I've been using this method for over 1-1/2 years now. I also highly recommend David Allen's book, Ready For Anything. It has many tips, thought-provoking ideas, and methods to reduce stress and accomplish more with your work time as ...

Essential Interviewing: A Programmed Approach to Effective Communication3 reviews
David R. Evans, Margaret T. Hearn, ...

Brooks Cole, 2007

Cogent, clear, concise
Cogent, lucid, concise, this book promises to be a fine choice for both psychology and business majors. The comprehensive evaluation of answers to interview questions in each chapter invites students to develop effective listening skills as well as help them perfect successful questioning techniques. The chapters on attending behavior and questioning are especially well done, providing a wealth ...

The Sibley Guide to Birds119 reviews
David Allen Sibley

Knopf, 2000

The Shelby Guide to Birds
This is the Best Bird Book on the market for beginers and those of experience. It is visually more complete than other books that I have or seen. It is a must as a birders' companion.

Ready for Anything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work and Life44 reviews
David Allen

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2004

Productivity and Self Discovery
David Allen's "Ready for Everything: 52 Productivity Principles for Work & Life" is excellent! As the companion book following his widely popular "Getting Things Done", it is a great addition to enhance personal productivity. I found myself revisiting the book time and again to get back on track whenever I felt overwhelmed. It inspired me to look with clarity and I discovered that it is entirely ...

The Sibley Guide to Bird Life & Behavior28 reviews
David Allen Sibley

Knopf, 2001

From the perspective of a non-birder...
I'm not a birder, though it seems like an interesting hobby. But I just look at the birds at the feeders and birdbath in the back yard and think, "I wonder what that one is?" So, I bought "The Sibley Guide to Birds" (which is outstanding) on the recommendation of a birder friend, and that led me to this book. On the one hand, it's a long, dense, scientific work. The years of effort and ...

The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America51 reviews
David Allen Sibley

Knopf, 2003

The BEST field guide
I own every book on bird identification that I have been able to find for birds of the western United States. This is by far the one I use the most. I've purchased it for several of my birding friends, keep a copy at my home site and one in my truck. One of the points that makes Sibley's guide so useful is that there are no actual photographs of birds. He has drawings that give the "more ...

Sourcebook of Family Theory and Research

Sage Publications, Inc, 2006

Now available in paperback for classroom use! "This comprehensive text provides a rich source of perspectives on theorising about the family for scholars, researchers, and students. Another of the book's strengths is the emphasis on multimethod approaches in family research. The book covers an impressive range of topics and issues - marital happiness, adjustment of children in divorce marriages, gay marriage, sibling ties, ethnic families of ...

European Politics In Transition 6th Edition1 review
Mark Kesselman, Joel Krieger, ...

Houghton Mifflin Company, 2008

Excellent Textbook
I used the 3rd edition of this one for a pol sci course a few years ago. Excellent textbook goes into the nitty gritty of postwar European domestic policies. Well organized and clearly written. For self study, use in conjunction with a good general history of postwar Western Europe by Philip Thody or William Hitchcock or Robert Paxton.

Sleep Tight! (Sesame Street)8 reviews
Constance Allen

Dalmatian Press, 2006

An excellent bedtime story
Our 21 month old son loves reading this book, both at bedtime and anytime we are reading together. It starts with Elmo at the park with his Dad, and they head home to get ready for bed. Along the way, Elmo sees different Sesame Street Monsters getting ready for bed by brushing their teeth, jumping on the bed, reading to their teddy bears, etc. Everyone is getting ready for bed, and at the end, ...

How Buildings Work: The Natural Order of Architecture9 reviews

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

Great Introduction for the Novice
I approach this book as someone who likes to walk around old neighborhoods and look at houses. I have collected architectural field guides for years and I can identify most building styles. However, I had little idea how buildings worked. This book was enjoyable because the writing style was simple and straight to the point. One does not need a technical background to get a lot out of the ...

Analysis of Tonal Music: A Schenkerian Approach2 reviews
Allen Cadwallader, David Gagne

Oxford University Press, USA, 2006

Best introduction to Schenkarian Analysis
I agree whole hearted with Perry's review, but give this book 5 Stars as it really is the best introduction to this subject. The book is clear and well laid out but it could benefit with more details on larger forms and completed analyses. That being said you should be able to tackle Schenker's books and analyse, and get into Salzer's Structrual Hearing and Forte's work after completing this ...

Entertaining with the Sopranos15 reviews
Carmela Soprano, Allen Rucker, ..., 2006

An Italian-American Classic
What a great concept! This book, along with its counterpart The Sopranos Family Cookbook: As Compiled by Artie Bucco are two of my favorite resources for Italian-American recipes, party ideas, and pure entertainment. Any time I tell family and friends that I'm going to be cooking recipes out of one of these cookbooks they all want to come over. "Entertaining with the Sopranos" offers party ...

Sibley's Birding Basics11 reviews
David Allen Sibley

Knopf, 2002

The best introduction I've seen
This is the best instruction I've ever seen, printed or otherwise, on learning how to bird. It includes not only basic visual identification skills, but also the basics of how to bird by sound. Sibley teaches the feather groups and anatomy, plumage variations, molting patterns, and effects of lighting that make some indentifications so difficult. I would recommend it to any aspiring birder.

Improve Your Vision Without Glasses or Contact Lenses52 reviews
Steven M. Beresford, David W. Muris, ...

Fireside, 1996

This really, really works!
After buying this book I was very excited to try the exercises, but realized it would be necessary for my optometrist to work with me to provide me with lower power contact lenses. I was doubtful that she would agree, but when I showed her the book she surprised me by enthusiastically agreeing. She told me that the idea of vision therapy is well-known among professionals, but not often used for a ...

Decimation: X-Men - Son of M (House of M)5 reviews
David Hine, Roy Allen Martinez

Marvel Comics, 2006

Curious revelations
I haven't been following the Marvel Universe too much in the past 10 years, only picking up a couple SPidermans, Xmens and Daredevils here and again. All of the sduden, The House of M comes about, a reality re-write with effects felt throughout the Marvel's earth. A tidal wave in the form of the mutant population has been cut down to the size of a kiddie-pool splash. Quicksilver, the original ...
