The Night Sky 40°-50° (Large)13 reviews
David S. Chandler

David Chandler Co., 1998

Night Sky Planisphere review
This is a very useful device for anyone interested in viewing the constellations. It is easy to use and much more versatile than star charts printed in magazines or newspapers since it can be used at any time of year. The star field rotates to match the sky at any time and date. Also like the rugged plastic construction, so that it is very sturdy. Only wish that Amazon stocked the 30-40 ...

The Widow of the South105 reviews
Robert Hicks

Hachette Audio, 2005

LOVED this book!
I loved this book so much that I dragged my family down to Franklin, TN, just to visit the place. Yes, it's fiction, but it is a great story. Hicks does a fantastic job detailing the area, and it has really paid off for Carnton and for Franklin. Many of these more obscure Civil War sites are struggling to remain in existence, and the success of this book has really put Franklin on the map.

Strategic Corporate Social Responsibility: Stakeholders in a Global Environment2 reviews
William B. Werther Jr., David Chandler

Sage Publications, Inc, 2005

AN OUTSTANDING BOOK IN EVERY RESPECT.
This book presents a stakeholder perspective for understanding the big picture of corporate social responsibility (CSR). These stakeholders are grouped as follows: organizational (employees, managers, stockholders, unions); economic (e.g., customers, creditors); and societal (e.g., communities, government and regulators, the environment). The book examines the scope of CSR, and views it ...

Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics7 reviews
David Chandler

Oxford University Press, USA, 1987

Caltech Graduate Student
This was a great book. It covered the important material and left out all of the extra garbage that most books carry on for pages about. The presentation was done using clear mathematics and modern, easily followed notation. The book is short making it practical to actually read the entire book if you are extremely busy. We used the book in conjunction with Hill. I don't recommend Hill ...

Exploring The Night Sky With Binoculars4 reviews
David Chandler

David Chandler Company, 2005

Great book for beginning astronomers!
Exploring the Night Sky is great at sparking interest in atronomy. While this book offers clear and useful guidance, you won't need a college course just to understand the terminology or an expensive model of telescope to make use of it. Exploring the Night Sky With Binoculars is perfectly suited to helping beginners experience and *enjoy* the stars!

The King of Lies95 reviews
John Hart

Recorded Books, 2006

Fantastic
This book kept me interested from page one to the very end. I didn't want to put it down. I love John Hart's writing style, he does a superb job in regards to description and really draws you into the book. I hated reaching the end of it, I just wanted it to go on.

The Emergence Of Modern Southeast Asia: A New History1 review

University of Hawaii Press, 2004

The Most Comprehensive Book of its Kind
This is the most comprehensive introductory text on Southeast Asian History that I have come across in many years. Despite there being several survey books such as Mary Somers Heidhues' Southeast Asia - A Concise History an in-depth examination of the political and/or economic history of the Southeast Asia is much appreciated as a pedagogical tool. Owen's compilation is different from most ...

The Night Sky 30°-40° (Small)14 reviews
David S. Chandler

David Chandler Co., 1998

Great Observing Tool
I recently took an astonomy class at my local college. This was a great tool for identifying/locating objects in the night sky. Until you use one of these planispheres with a red lensed flashlight, you won't realize the advantage of a dark on light format. Yup, this planisphere, a red lensed flashlight, and a lounge chair under the night sky....and being able to tell my wife I'm doing ...

The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable324 reviews
Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Recorded Books, 2007

Black Swans In American Industries
A very interesting concept and I believe, a very true phenomena that exists in every walk of life. As a corporate human resources director, black swans can bring disastrous results if proper planning is not in place. While most of my career has been mundane to say the least, the periods where I experienced `Extremistan' were the times when great change happened either in my career or within ...

The Campaigns of Napoleon34 reviews
David G. Chandler

Scribner, 1973

The best single reference on the campaigns of Napoleon
This is, without question, the best single volume reference in English on the campaigns of Napoleon. This book is not perfect, and I would agree with some of the negative points made by other reviewers, but I cannot understand how anyone would give this less than five stars. There is simply no other book that is even comparable to this one. This book is to the Napoleonic Wars what Shelby ...

Voices from S-21: Terror and History in Pol Pot's Secret Prison9 reviews
David Chandler

University of California Press, 2000

The Psychology of Horror
David Chandler's "Voices from S-21: Terror and History in Pol Pot's Secret Prison" is a good book for a novice like me. Chandler starts by framing the book around the S-21 institution and its configuration. Chandler then dedicates and entire portion to the memoirs of the purges; the allegation santebal leveled at prisoners; and the various approaches of "politics" and "torture." The book ...

The Night Sky, Southern Hemisphere Edition (Large)2 reviews
David Chandler

David Chandler Co., 1998

Southern Hemisphere product !
Almost all such products are designed for the Northern Hemisphere, as this is where most amateur astronomers are. But here is a planisphere for the Southern Hemisphere which I have found to be very useful indeed. It is large, uncluttered and easy to read using a red flashlight.

The Tragedy of Cambodian History: Politics, War, and Revolution since 19452 reviews
David P. Chandler

Yale University Press, 1993

Insightful Analysis
Chandler, the most eminent scholar of Cambodia, has provide an easy to follow and insightful account of Cambodia's recent history. Whilst perhaps not designed for those with no base knowledge in Cambodian history, a read of the relevant section of a general Asian history book will provide all the background knowledge necessary. The Tragedy of Cambodian History traces not only the significant ...

The Night Sky 20°-30° (Small)7 reviews
David S. Chandler

David Chandler Co., 1998

I'm enjoying it a lot.
It is very detailed. As it says, it's very similar to the stars you actually see in the sky. It works as follows: there is an outter dial with the days of the year, and an inner dial with the hours of day. By aligning them, it is easy to see the stars that are on the sky at any day (night) and hour. One side faces North and the other side faces South. It has the star coordinate system (the one in ...

Solutions Manual for Introduction to Modern Statistical Mechanics3 reviews
David Chandler, David Wu

Oxford University Press, USA, 1988

One of the best
This book is really one of the better book on statistical physics. It is short and concise but it is impressive the amount of physics discussed in this book! And the presentation is really modern.

A Record of Cambodia: The Land and Its People3 reviews
Zhou Daguan

Silkworm Books, 2007

Rare, readable, relevant...and entertaining!
If you're heading to Cambodia as a tourist on your first visit...or if you're a scholar immersed in Southeast Asian studies...this book is for you. It's unusual to find a work of this depth that holds such broad appeal. Zhou Daguan's 700 year old report of his diplomatic journey to the fabulously wealthy ancient Khmer capital of Angkor is rare. In fact, it is one of the only written records ...

Blood Trail (Joe Pickett Novels)21 reviews
C. J. Box

Recorded Books, 2008

For anyone who likes mysteries
It's a good year indeed when we are blessed with two books by C. J. Box. The stand-alone work BLUE HEAVEN was published early in 2008 and garnered a hint of the commercial success that Box has deserved since he first began setting pen to paper with OPEN SEASON. The newly released BLOOD TRAIL, his latest Joe Pickett novel, provides a point for jumping onto the series for those readers who have yet ...

A History of Cambodia4 reviews
David Chandler

Westview Press, 2007

This is what a history book ought to be
Chandler presents a rather complete picture of the long history of Cambodia in about 250 pages. He's concise--what a blessing from a historian. He highlights the most important AND the most interesting details about each period in Cambodian history, and avoids the common problem of banality that many history books have. It's truly a good read, and an easy one, too. It's written in a very clear ...

Debating Cosmopolitics (New Left Review Debates)

Verso, 2003

Cosmopolitics, the concept of a world politics based on shared democratic values, is in an increasingly fragile state. While Western democracies insist ever more vehemently upon a maintenance of their privileges—freedom of speech, security, wealth—an increasing number of the world's inhabitants are under threat of poverty, famine and war. What is needed, the writers suggest, is a deliberate decision to extend the principles and ...

Stay Alive, My Son7 reviews
Pin Yathay

Cornell University Press, 2000

Murderous utopia
Pin Yathay's biography is a unique dramatic and shocking report on the Red Khmer regime in the 1970s in Cambodia. It contains an excellent first-hand account of the disorderly evacuation of Phnom Penh after the Red Khmer victory in the civil war. After the evacuation, the whole country was turned into an experiment of totalitarian economy (no money, no private property, spying on everybody). The ...
