wonderful
When I first read this story I was a kid. Now, a few years later, I still return to it often, as it was my favorite and a great read. Don't be turned off by the age recommendation-this is interesting for older teens as well. I first picked "The Wanderer" from the library after reading another one of Creech's books, "Walk Two Moons". They do pose some similarities, namely a female main ...

Running just as fast as she can
Inspirational stories fill hundreds of picture books every year. Most are simply awful. They either tell tales that are loose plots barely supported by facts or they paste together a slapdash concoction of truth and fiction with as little thought as possible. The truly beautiful bio-picture books out there are as rare as hummingbirds in autumn. So it was with great joy that I located "Wilma ...
Tracking--Signs of Man, Signs of Hope: A Systematic Approach to the Art and Science of Tracking Humans

An excellent book heavily focused on military tracking
This book is primarily focused on the needs the military tracker, and that is the author's background. It does, indeed, attempt to present a systematic approach to the subject and largely succeeds. Although I am primarily interested in civilian search and rescue tracking, I found a lot to learn and consider in this book. An excellent complement to this book is "The SAS Guide to Tracking" by Bob ...

Excellent book!
This book is very touching...it sensitively portrays the sacrafices Mexican immigrants have to make to move to America for their children to have a better life. Very well done themes of parental love, long car trips, the sadness of leaving one's home country, sibling realtionships, husband and wife being romantic (tasteful and age-appropriate), and a child's growing understanding of the ...

Elements Of Pop Up: A Pop Up Book For Aspiring Paper Engineers

Delivers lots more than it promises.
This, as the title says, shows a variety of elementary paper popups - the cute little folded thingies in books and cards that stand up when the page is opened. The book's a real strength that it includes an actual, working specimen of each structure it describes. Except for one or two demonstratons, the popup folds never pass the basic, and never show the incredible breadth of artistry that can ...

A Fantasy Fable for Our Time
The Castle Corona is a beautiful book, written by a Newbery award winner and with illuminations (not illustrations) by Caldecott winner David Diaz. The illuminations are a good way of explaining the book, actually, since the story is itself a blend of the old and the new. Diaz is a contemporary, multicultural artist working here in a medieval tradition--and this combination gives the artwork a ...

Excellent:for its humor, poetic quality, illustrations.
I highly recommend this book. The lines are easy to remember, and are very quotable. They provide an introduction to poetry and to the play with language. They introduce vocabulary with humor. The illustrations are quite extraordinary, the print of high quality.

An Amazing Classroom Resource!
Eve Bunting wrote "Smoky Night" as a children's book that teaches some very valuable lessons. She wrote about the experiences of the Los Angeles riots from the point of view of a young boy named Daniel. Daniel and his mother live in Los Angeles when the riots break out. Daniel watches the evil things people are doing outside his window and learns that they do it because they don't like the ...

Ghosties, ghoulies, and a mystery or two
From the title of this book, I was expecting mostly ghost stories. However, this book is unique in its genre, and I was very pleasantly surprised! Although this book has much legend and lore, of which I am not usually a fan, this author's ability as a raconteur quickly overcomes the boundaries of time. These tales are superbly told by a master at his game. Joseph Citro, in his own words, ...

Rite Of Passage
I thought that this was an excellent book. I loved the fact that this was taken place in the ghettos of New York. I also loved the excitement it builded up in me. I couldn't take my hands off of the book. The only one thing that I didn't like was the ending. I didn't like it because I was hoping for him to go back with his family.

A great book to use in the classroom when teaching poetry.
This book was a fantastic support when teaching 5th graders to move beyond "recipe" poetry. The ode structure helps them find the poetry in their day to day experiences. They thoroughly enjoyed listening to Gary Soto's odes, and were eager to write their own.

In this Southwestern creation tale, Desert Woman creates a new animal to help keep the bully, Rattlesnake, under control. My kid is obsessed with this book
The absorbing subject matter of this book, presented through catchy rhymes and alliteration and strong, colorful illustrations, has completely captured the imagination of my four-year-old. For three days now, he's been "Juan" almost exclusively, following ants to a vein of "the very best clay, all squishy and white," pretending to make vessels for every conceivable purpose, and peppering me with ...

What if Mother Goose lived in the ghetto?
I first heard Eve Merriam's "The Inner City Mother Goose" in 1971, when it was part of the Oral Interpretation performed by Richard Quezada that won the New Mexico State Speech contest. Rick had a wonderful deep voice, the sort that radio DJs would die for, and he made these poems really come alive. Today people get all excited by politically correct fairy tales, but for our generation it was ...

Must Have
This is a great book for a family that is not necessarily bilingual but has an interest in learning. The Spanish/English translations and pronunciations are simple and the illustrations are fabulous. We checked it out at the library and ended up ordering our own. Everyone in our family of 5 enjoys this book. I wish there were more like this!
