Reformed Theology in America: A History of Its Modern Development3 reviews

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1985

Great Overview of Reformed Thought
Not only does this book introduce the reader to the history of Reformed theology, but it also gives great explanations of each segment. In my opinion, the two best chapters are Herman Dooyeweerd in North America by C.T. McIntire and Cornelius Van Til by Wesley Roberts. Although short, the chapter on Van Til gives a very good explanation of his epistemology and methodology.

Losing Our Virtue: Why the Church Must Recover Its Moral Vision10 reviews
David F. Wells

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1999

Very perceptive - Great book
This was my first exposure to David Wells, and I'm extremely impressed. His analysis of the cultural situation of our time is extremely perceptive, and his description of the consumer-driven church is very good - slices and dices. He certainly covers his bases in terms of research. This book could rightly be called a Jeremiad for our time, and I highly recommend it.

Reforming or Conforming?: Post-Conservative Evangelicals and the Emerging Church

Crossway Books, 2008

Thirteen Reformed scholars take on postmodern evangelicals and provide a solid, biblical critique of their ideas. While self-described “post-conservative evangelicals” enjoy increasing influence in the evangelical world, they represent a significant challenge to biblical faith. Popularizers like Brian McLaren (of Emergent Church fame) trade on the work of scholars like Stan Grenz, John Franke, and Roger Olson, whose ...

Above All Earthly Pow'rs: Christ in a Postmodern World18 reviews
David F. Wells

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 2005

A Timely And Important Warning
Other reviewers have indicated how important & difficult this book is to read. It is dense and requires sustained thought. But the insights in this book are absolutely essential to understanding how dramatically, comprehensively and severly Evangelical Christianity has been compromised or is being compromised in the post-modern cultural context. I will focus on what I consider to be the ...

No Place for Truth or Whatever Happened to Evangelical Theology?15 reviews
David F. Wells

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1993

A magisterial analysis!
This is a provocative, demanding and rewarding book that attempts to grapple with some of the central challenges of Christian thought and life in a modern or post-modern world. Looking through Amazon and one or two other online sites, it is clear that many readers have also read Mark A. Noll's The Scandal of the Evangelical Mind. I have too; and by way of introduction to David F. Wells' book, it ...

Why We're Not Emergent: By Two Guys Who Should Be30 reviews
Kevin DeYoung, Ted Kluck

Moody Publishers, 2008

Balanced and thought provoking
DeYoung and Kluck do an excellent job of asking tough questions about the Emergent movement, and yet they do it in a way that is representative of the faith they confess. More congregants need to be asking their leaders... "just where are you leading us?" This book will help them do just that.

The Supremacy of Christ in a Postmodern World5 reviews

Crossway Books, 2007

Collection of essays to make you think
The whole collection of essays could easily be summarized in Voddie Baucham's statement on page 62: "Christ is 'before all things.' Why did you choose your last job? Was it because of the supremacy of Christ in truth as it relates to your purpose for existing? Or was it because it paid you more than the job you had before? Pastor, how did you choose your current church? Was it because of a ...

God in the Wasteland: The Reality of Truth in a World of Fading Dreams6 reviews
David F. Wells

Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing Company, 1994

Very insightful and thought provoking .
I am reading this book as part of a course in basic theology, and it is very illuminating. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in the church who wants to tell about "the reason for the hope that lies within you..." It is not just for a few pastors and teachers to know theology; it is the opportunity of everyone in the church.

Whatever Happened to the Reformation?3 reviews

P & R Publishing, 2001

excellent essays
Under the banner of evangelicalism, people are promoting an "open theism" that attempts to rid Protestantism of its belief in the sovereignty and omniscience of God. In Whatever Happened to the Reformation?, a number of scholars, including Drs. R.C. Sproul, John MacArthur, Bruce Ware, and R. Fowler White, have come together to provide a strong and reasoned response to this modern-day heresy - a ...

Only One Way?: Reaffirming the Exclusive Truth Claims of Christianity3 reviews

Crossway Books, 2007

6 Essays, One Message
Speaking in concert, the authors appeal to their contemporaries to avoid getting caught in the cultural rejection of biblical truth so prevalent in our post-modern neighborhoods and metropolitan Babels. Chapter 1, David F Wells: One Among Many 'On the grounds that they have God 'within' them, 60% of Americans say that they do not need the Church. In life's crises, 56% say that they look for ...

By Faith Alone: Answering the Challenges to the Doctrine of Justification2 reviews

Crossway Books, 2007

Thought-provoking theological essays
This is a very thought-provoking series of theological essays engaging the contemporary challenges to the historic Reformed understanding of the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Any book of this sort, with multiple contributors, is bound to be somewhat uneven in quality - but this is one of the better books of this sort that I've seen. Here is the table of contents, interspersed with ...
