"Modernization" Results in a Beowulf of Satisfying Clarity
Beowulf is likely the most famous Old English literary work. A poem of 3182 lines, it survives only in a single manuscript a thousand years old. Before reaching this media, its story was sung aloud by entertainers called scops, possibly for easily as many years before. Its substance is two-fold; the perseverance of the hero in the face of great adversity, and its tone, variously described as ...

Another Saturday to Kill
"You can always count on a murderer for a fancy prose style" wrote Nabokov's Humbert Humbert on the first page of Lolita. David Kaufman's Adrian O'Bannion is one of those qualified demented stylists, no question. Every event in Another Saturday to Kill is filtered through the active--and often fantasizing--mind of this failing middle-aged English literature PhD candidate. It's all about the ...

GREAT ART, FUNNY STORY LINE, GOOD TEACHING TOOL. GREAT BOOK!
Karen Orloff and David Catrow have teamed up in this one to give us a very funny story of a little boy, Alex, who wants very, very much to have his own pet Iguana. The problem is...obviously, Mom! The entire book is consists of notes, or mini-letters, written between Alex and his mom. The little boy of course is pointing out the obvious advantages of having his own lizard in his room (in his ...

Simply wonderful
I'm a medical student doing my thesis in psychiatry and with a long history of not memorizing neurology very well. This book helps a lot in that it allows you to create a picture in your mind of how the "classical" patient with a given disorder looks like. I had just read about cluster headaches and the next day in my neurology rotation I saw a patient with one because I recognized him to ...

Want to Learn Op Amp Design
If you have a background in electronics, then this book will teach you how to design Op Amp circuits. The clarity of the text and examples is unequaled. I had to purchase two copies of this book. I lent the first one out and forgot to whom I lent it. So I had to buy another copy which I've had to over ten years. Why? Because the book is that good.

Are you trying to teach persuasive text? Then this is the book for you! I have used this to teach persuasive text to 6th graders as well as 10th and 11th graders. The illustrations are priceless and the book is very entertaining. It does an excellent job of showing argument/counterargument. I highly recommend this book!!! :-)

In the final analysis...the Comeback Kid prevails
"Back from the Dead: How Clinton Survived the Republican Revolution," is a crisp behind-the-scenes examination of how William Jefferson Clinton ultimately defeated a determined Republican Party. To this end, Clinton's extraordinary political skills and a smart move away from the left and to the soft center of American politics paved the way for victory. Evan Thomas also cites three other ...

A Thorough and Moving Account
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Ludlam's life. The author does a terrific job explaining the origins of both Ludlam's talent and his powerful (and often exasperating) personality. Of course, the book can't be as much fun as the shows were, but it is nonetheless an exciting and full account of one of the true originals of our theatrical times. I do agree with the reviewer ...
