I've used textbooks before...
but this is undoubtedly the best Anthology of American Literature available, if only because of the sheer variety and bulk of literature contained in it. As an added plus, there's background information on every author contained in the book. The writing varies from Columbus's diaries to late 20th century poetry, so there's something to interest everyone. All in all, it's a wonderful buy for ...

Great ideas in a Short Read!
I had the privilege of working with David Minter at Blockbuster in the glory years. As he shows in this book, the management team under Huizenga was in `the zone' so-to-speak. It was a great time, and Minter and Reid point out why Blockbuster had that success, and how other entrepreneurs can as well. Highly recommend reading this more than once!

NNhhh...
It's kinda good, kinda not. Too many books in one book, I don't like that. The paper's too thin, the text is too small. If you're a cheapscate and you want the books and stuff in here, (wide variety, that's good,) then I suggest you buy the seperate individual types unless saving money is your only priority.
William Faulkner: His Life and Work

An American Tragedy
Faulkner's life is a massive subject that oddly seems to become more, rather than less elusive with time. He was at least half a 19th century sensibility, and samplings from recent biographies show him disappearing in the fog of current political corectness. The major, "official" biography in 2 volumes by Joseph Blotner is of course indispensible for names, dates, places, and other essential ...
A Cultural History of the American Novel: Henry James to William Faulkner
David L. Minter
Cambridge University Press
, 1996
A Cultural History of the American Novel interweaves a wide selection of the novels of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries with a series of cultural events ranging from Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show to the "Southern Renaissance" of the 1930s. Minter rereads the novels of the period as works of art that arise from and that remain embedded in culture, arguing conversely that cultural events differ in degree but not in kind from ...

I remain enthusiastic
I read this book in college -- about 40 years ago -- and have read it twice since then, as new editions emerged. This corrected text is probably the closest to what Faulkner actually wrote. It is a story of the human heart in conflict with itself, told from several points of view, beginning with the tale "told by an idiot." A grand simplicity governs the page-by-page complexity of this novel, ...

Great But Difficult Novel
This is perhaps the most difficult novel written that's worth the time to read. I'd STRONGLY suggest you buy Volpe's book on Faulkner's Novels to read along with it first. Volpe breaks down the points at which a different charecter takes over the narrative. After that, try it yourself, but Volpe is the best guide for the person new to Faulkner's harder(hardest)work. The Norton Edition has a great ...

Twentieth Century Interpretations of Light in August
David L. Minter
Prentice Hall Inc
, 1969
"The critical consensus that proclaims Faulkner's gretness is important primarily because it enables us more adequately, if still tentatively, to define the nature and extent of his achievements-to distinguish its qualities and fix its boundaries.
