100 Years of Major League Baseball: American and National Leagues, 1901-2000 2 reviews David Nemec, Saul Wisnia
Publications International, Ltd, 2000
GREAT This book is very accurate description of the first 100 years of baseball in the U.S. THe book follows the major leagues in incriments of 10 years up until 2000. Moreover, the book adds important information about how important times in history effected the game. For example- racism and the depression of the 1920's. This book is a MUST read for any serious baseball fan or "history buff."

The Absolutely Most Challenging Baseball Quiz Book, Ever 3 reviews David Nemec
Macmillan Pub Co, 1977
An amazing book The absolutely most amazing thing about this book is that apparently only one mind is responsible for putting it together. The second absolutely most amazing thing is that it was done over 20 years ago.

Baseball: More than 150 years 1 review David Nemec
Publications International, Ltd, 1997
My Review Baseball More Than 150 Years is a must for the baseball fan. The co-authors David Nemec and Saul Wisnia did a wonderful job covering baseball from the very first game on June 19, 1846 through the 1900's. I myself am a baseball lover and I have never read or seen anything about the game that is more in depth than this book. This book goes into every year from1846 through 1995 giving pictures of ...

Early Dreams 1 review David Nemec
Baseball Press Books, 1998
Historical Baseball Writing at its Best. David Nemec gives us a gritty rendering of what baseball and life were like in the mid-1800s in this well written and certainly well researched novel. His portraits of real baseball personages, ranging from Cap Anson to Moses Walker, ring true and to the mark.

Stonesifer 4 reviews David Nemec
Monterey Pacific Publishers, 1998
Crime thriller for the thinking reader One of the things that makes this book very unique is how the author puts the reader inside of the mind of a very intelligent, even sensitive killer. We are able to view not only Stonesifer's sordid actions, but all the intimate thought processes...the motivations, rationale, and even the self-criticism with which he flogs himself. This is a thriller for the thinking reader. We are able to ...

The Baseball Challenge Quiz Book 1 review David Nemec
Signet Book, 1993
Nemec's long been the best trivia guy and he still is I think I know a lot about baseball until I meet up with another one of Nemec's trivia books. Along about the second page I remember that there's a lot more than I don't know. Nemec's stuff isn't really trivia. He's very good at making you feel that you're always learning something about your favorite game as you have fun doing battle with his many great questions about it.

The Great 19th Century Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball 8 reviews David Nemec
Dutton Adult, 1997
Triple-Crown job The season stories and sidebars are all excellent. So are the photos. This isn't really a criticism, but I do wish the season stats for each player had been a bit fuller. I'd be glad to take a smaller type size if it meant getting in stats like batter strikeouts, sacrifice hits, etc. The same with the career stats. I like the way the author sorts the players according to the most ...

Great Baseball Facts, Feats, and First 2001 Edition (Great Baseball Feats, Facts & Firsts) 8 reviews David Nemec
Signet, 2001
This book is like a drug! I still have my dingy 1989 copy, which helped me get through a boring summer that year! (I was only 14 at the time) Still, all these years later, even though some of the records have changed, and there are new ballparks and teams, I still refer to my old copy all the time, especially in December and January, when it seems like spring training will never arrive! Not just a trivia book (though ...

Remember Me to My Father 4 reviews David Nemec
Robert D. Reed Publishers, 2001
Gutsy and passionate Nemec is one the most unappreciated fiction writers we have. Every one of his books is gutsy and passionate and full of strange twists. This book combines accurate, unsentimental pictures of growing up in the 50's in tight concentric circles with the drama and risk of breaking out of those circles into manhood.

Beer & Whisky League 5 reviews David Nemec
The Lyons Press, 1994
A Beauty in Every Way The baseball element in this book is only part of its charm. The author, with help from the publisher, has also assembled an aesthetic treat for the reader. As the cover suggests, the book is an artful prose and pictorial rendering of an early epoch in our National Pastime. A must I would think for every even mildly serious collector--and that is how I'd describe myself. I'm very glad to ...

The Systems of M.R. Shurnas: A Novel 1 review David Nemec
Riverrun Pr, 1985
A Hidden Classic After reading Nemec's recent Stonesifer, I was compelled to try to find his earliest novels. Not easy. I finally found The Systems of M.R. Shurnas via interlibrary loan. It's readily apparent why this book is relatively unknown. Nemec was way, way ahead of his time when he wrote it. His approach here to his protagonist is also much more European than American. Shurnas is nevertheless as ...

The Ultimate Baseball Book 2 reviews David Nemec
Houghton Mifflin Company, 1991
One of the greatest and most influential baseball books ever The ttiel sounds a tad off-putting, but the book delivers. It's an excellent combination of narrative history, idiosyncratic essays and beautiful photos about the national pastime. The style has been often duplicated since but never equalled

Bright lights, dark rooms 1 review David Nemec
Doubleday, 1980
Quirky & Offbeat Not your typical whodunit. The protagonist is named Richard Barwegan. At one point in the book he calls himself "Spec" Sanders. Maybe I'm the only one old enough to know this, but the story is full of characters named after players in the old All America Football Conference. The author missed an opportunity when he didn't work in Angelo Bertelli's name somehow. A truly weird book.

The Official Rules of Baseball 7 reviews David Nemec
The Lyons Press, 1994
Best Book I've Read on This Subject Nice job of interweaving baseball's rules with anecdotes giving you the reasons they were first implemented or else later modified. I found it a surprise that this book was first written in 1994 and then updated for 1999 with almost no effort at all. Because there have been no important changes at all in the rules for a number of years now! Think about that. Monumental player strikes, ...
