Your typical men-at-arms title, concise and well-researched text supported by numerous illustrations, including Angus McBride's standard quality plates.

Long-awaited Osprey title
I have been fascinated by the Knights of the Teutonic Order for several years now, but have been frustrated by the relative lack of attention they have received from Osprey. Finally, they have released a title on the Order and, as is often the case with Osprey, the pictures alone make it well worth one's money! The author David Nicolle needs little introduction, having established himself as ...

Baltic Crusaders
This book gives an informative examination of perhaps the most ignored period of the Crusades. Both the text and the plates detail the appearance and tactics of the Danes, Swedes, Finns, and Teutonic Order, and their typically pagan Slavic and Lithuanian enemies. Plate C also gives an interesting portrayal of the origins of the Danish Flag.

God's Warriors by Nicholson and Nicolle
This work describes the horrific battles leading up to the Muslim capture of Jerusalem in 1187. Saladin destroyed the Christian armies; whereupon, Richard I commenced the 3rd Crusade. Saladin was considered the greatest man in the 12th century Middle Ages. Various pieces of artwork depict the struggles of the period;namely, - a 12th and 13th century stucco of Persia depicts horsemen ...

Great reference with outstanding illustrations
Although its chapters focus on the four most prominent Mongol leaders of the 12th through 15th centuries, this book is much more than a collection of short biographies. Centered around the life and times of Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan, Hulegu, and Timur are excellent descriptions of Mongol culture, archaeology, military tactics, and campaign strategies. David Nicolle's writing style is a pleasure ...

Intro to the 3rd Crusade
Really have nothing to say that the previous two reviewers didn't cover. It is the best introduction to Richard Coeur d Leon's war with Salah al-Din, covering the politics of the time as well as some finer details of Richard's battles. The color plates are pretty good.

Knights Hospitaller (1) 1100-1306
The Knights Hospitaller is one of the Ospery warrior collection and it is a wealth of information on the who, what, where and why of the Knights Hospitaller, the lesser known but equally important order of knights that fought for the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the Cursades. Do not let the comic book look fool you the illustrations are just a minor part of the excellent writing, research ...

Masterpiece of illustrated history
This book is overflowing with beautiful maps, fascinating photos and insightful descriptions. I find Nicolle's Historical Atlas of the Islamic World to be one of the best introductions to the history of the Muslim world. The layout is astounding, and puts much pricier atlases, even the Oxford Atlas of World History, to shame. One should note that this is not just a history of the Muslim ...

Charlemagne against all odds
Though many books are written about this battle, this all the same differs from other researches by a new sight at events of that period. David Nicolle also considers the disputable moments of campaign and analyzes the points of view of different historians. The balanced approach allows to look at events of those days a little differently. The author starts with brief introduction on islamic ...

Informative text harmonized with attractive illustrations.
I bought this one for the same reasons that I bought the title _Late Roman Infantryman_ which is also from Osprey military books, and one which I have also reviewed for Amazon.com. I do a lot of research on the historical origins of Arthurian myths, and books like these cover the right general areas of the world in roughly the right period (see also my review of Osprey's _Arthur and the ...
Crusader Castles in the Holy Land 1192-1302 (Fortress)
David Nicolle
Osprey Publishing
, 2005
The debacle of the Second Crusade in 1148 caused the Crusader States to realise the necessity of developing a more cautious strategy. The original expansionist spirit largely disappeared, and the Crusader States made priorities of strengthening their existing fortifications and towns and building new castles. These structures encompassed core aspects of Western European military architecture with the integration of rapidly developing Arab and ...

Arrogance at work !
But not in this work. The title of this review is a quotation of the French Admiral de Vienne who uttered it at the sight of the over hastily advancing French and Burgundian knights."When truth and reason cannot be heard, than must arrogance rule".Thus giving a perfect one-sentence description of the battle. What are the good points in this book: -The description of the crusading spirit of the ...

Excellent Resource
This book, another in the collection on Castles and architecture, focuses on the Castles in the area known as the Levant, or the Holy Land, built during the period of 1097-1192. The focus is on the castles that were in use or used by the Crusaders during the time of the Crusades. This series of books, the Fortress books by Osprey, are some of the best tools that can be utilized by anyone who ...

A good reference book for a forgotten war
As the back cover suggests, the books in the Men-at-Arms series are not history books in the normal sense, but rather cover the uniforms, equipment and organization of various military forces of the past and present from around the world. In covering the Italian invasion of Ethiopia (or Abyssinia, as it was known until modern times) this book sheds light on the forces that fought this largely ...

Cross-Sections Castle is an Awesome Book!
This is an exceptional book that is intended for children aged 9 to 12, but is fascinating even for adult readers. You get to see and learn about a fully functional castle in it's heyday. A grand medieval castle is divided into it's many different subsections. Each part of the castle is shown and described in great detail. Its inhabitants, from the Royalty and their residential area, to the ...

Detailed source
A very detailed source on the Islamic armies of the Second and Third Crusades, focusing on the Ayyubids of Salah al-Din but also examining the Fatimids, the Seljuks, and other Turkish factions. Helps dispel some myths and stereotypes about medieval Eastern warfare and shows how, in many respects it was connected to that of Europe.
