Grandmaster Meets Chess Amateur (Batsford Chess Library)2 reviews
Steve Davis, David Norwood

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1995

A total delight
Norwood is a genius. This book is both the funniest chess book ever written (where else can you see a photo of a guy sitting on the toilet reading a chess book! I have done that so many times), and one of the most instructive beginner/intermediate manuals. The teaching method is by comparing the thought processes of an amateur and a GM, and it works beautifully. I love this book!

Winning With the Modern (Batsford Chess Library)3 reviews
David Norwood

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1994

Essential!
Norwood has written a treatise on how to play the Modern that is like an "insider's" guide. He know this opening, its ups and downs (and sideways). Even though it is called "Winning with," it is written objectively. In fact, it starts out with several lengthy chess quotes about he weakness of the king's finachetto. He tells you what to look out for, and teaches you the ideas and strategies ...

Chess Puzzles (Usborne Chess Guides)1 review
David Norwood

E.D.C. Publishing, 1992

Great for kids and grown-ups too
A great little book for chess fans. An understanding of chess is assumed as well as some proficiency in the game. The puzzles should be fun and the answers are in the back of the book. Great book for kids or anyone wanting to improve their game.

Advanced Chess (Usborne Chess Guides)5 reviews
David Norwood

E.D.C. Publishing, 1991

Great, simple clear colorful book on chess.
Only a quarter of an inch thick, this heavy paperback has beautiful color picture board diagrams. Title says Advanced chess, but really for those who know how to move chess pieces. Very good introduction to opening principles, Opening examples; middle game strategies and tactics and endgame ideas. I have a library of more than 100 chess books, this book is outstanding bacause it covers all ...

Vishy Anand: Chess Super-Talent (Batsford Chess Library)4 reviews
David Norwood

Henry Holt & Co (P), 1995

tactful handling of an uneventful subject matter
Not a great book for chess enthusiasts concerned about Anand's games..yet it sheds some light on this Super-genius's life as a `human' which normally today's GM's have no touch. Humorous setting makes it a fun for collectors of Biographies..Not at all a bore but not for a serious chess player.Book is good but the price isn't !

The French Revolution in Culture and Society (Contributions to the Study of World History)

Greenwood Press, 1991

This volume examines the issue of the timing of cultural change, problems of Revolutionary anticipations and reverberations, and the relationship between culture, politics, and society. Individual essays combine both old and new approaches, ranging from textual analysis to the study of local judicial records, from the psychohistorical to the demographic. But they all demonstrate the usefulness of linking social and cultural history, broadly ...
