Double Deuce23 reviews
Robert B Parker

Phoenix Books, 2005

Casting Pearls Before Swine to find a Pearl in the Oyster. Reverse Right. Leave Left.
As a calculated contrast to life in the gang-infested DOUBLE DEUCE housing complex, scenes of daily doings in Susan's home provided prime parlay between Spenser and his lady, resulting in poignant posing in the DD bailiwick broken up by hearty humor in the SS Titanic. What a cartoon-funny difference (no black-tongued-grins from "THE WAR OF THE ROSES" there) Parker painted between Susan's fronted ...

Paper Doll22 reviews
Robert B. Parker

New Millennium Audio, 2003

Color Crayons & Paper Dolls. Tigers Beware.
Push a Pin into the perfection balloon. What is marriage ... what are styles of domesticity ... to a wealthy WASP, to a liberated couple like Spenser and Susan, to a good-guy gay cop, to a State Senator, to an aging wealthy southerner. The concluding scene in DOUBLE DEUCE, # 19 in the Spenser series, catered a surprising twist to Susan and Spenser's attempts at traditional homemaking. That ...

David Ogilvy

Legendary advertiser and marketer David Ogilvy shares his insights on what makes for good advertising and marketing. ...

Pastime21 reviews
Robert B Parker

Phoenix Books, 2005

Vintage Vignettes on Varieties of Rain? Dining on Times Past? Casting Pearls Before Swine? Oh Yeah. Tim Taylor approved!
The beginning chapters of PASTIME used a dramatically different stye from previous books I've read in the Spenser series. As other reviewers have helpfully described, this one's personal, and as such, to me it felt warm and "homey" (though, after the first chapters, the Spenser/Hawk/mob grit got going with full guts and grandeur... then paused periodically for more cozy "cookie" breaks). ...

I'm in Charge of Me! (The Best Me I Can Be)
David Parker

Scholastic Inc., 2004

This book is about self-control. Self-control, in a general sense, is a choice. Making choices puts children in charge of their own behavior instead of having someone tell them the proper way to behave. When children are empowered to make self-control choices and begin to practice making them, they start to see the positive effect these choices have on how others see them and, most important, how they see themselves in the world.

L.A. Outlaws: A Novel32 reviews
T. Jefferson Parker

Brilliance Audio on CD Unabridged, 2008

Allison Murietta Will Knock You Out
I am always a tiny bit wary of female characters created by male authors. I don't know -- sometimes male authors don't seem to get into the mindset of the female character. That is NOT the case in T. Jefferson Parker's "LA Outlaws". Allison Murietta is an extremely dynamic and well realized character. What makes her even more exciting is that her chapters are told from the first-person point of ...

Excellence in Business Communication (Test Bank, Fifth Edition)5 reviews
John V. Thill

Prentice Hall, 2002

Wonderful reference book
I use this book for my primary text in a Business and Professional Communication class that I teach. The students like how the book is organized; I appreciate the examples that we can use in class for discussion. Beyond that, the AIDA approach to business writing is clear and easy to use once students get the hang of it. My students' major project is to work with an organization in solving a ...

I show respect (The Best Me I can Be)
David Parker

Scholastic, 2004

This Book is about respect. Respect is a very difficult concept to explain to children. Long before children understand what respect is, they need to learn some of the behaviors associated with it. Repetition is a wonderful way to teach this. It is the goal here through repetition to teach, review, and reinforce some of the behaviors of respect

I Am Generous! ((The Best Me I Can Be))
David Parker; Illustrator-Cristina Ong

Scholastic, Inc., 2004

This book is about generosity. Children at this age are typically in the egocentric phase of development. They want to know "What's in it for me?" The message that I want to send to them is that they will feel good when they do something for someone else. This book models what children can do for others right now in their lives.

Maya Cosmos: Three Thousand Years on the Shaman's Path6 reviews
David A. Freidel, Linda Schele, ...

William Morrow & Co, 1993

The First Book to Tell the Real Story About Maya Shamanism
As a person who has traveled in places where the modern Maya live--Honduras, Guatemala, and Mexico--and who has taken the trouble to get to know what the history and culture of these admirable people is really like, I have always been appalled at the number of books that claim to be about "Maya shamanism," but are really just New Age claptrap. While it is true that MAYA COSMOS does not read ...

Fallen, The49 reviews
T. Jefferson Parker

Brilliance Audio on CD Unabridged, 2006

Move over Joseph Wambaugh!!!
In T. Jefferson Parker's newest novel, The Fallen, Robbie Brownlaw is a Homicide Detective for the San Diego Police Department. He's known to most of the city as the "Falling Detective" because he was thrown out of a six-story hotel window when trying to save someone from the burning flames. Though he miraculously survived the near-fatal fall, he came away from it with a very special ability ...

I Accept You As You Are! (The Best Me I Can Be)
David Parker

Scholastic Inc., 2004

This book is about accepting differences in people. Recognizing and accepting that there are differences among their peers is an important step for children at this stage of development. Trying to embrace these differences without losing their own sense of self is an essential concept addressed in this book.

Thin Air20 reviews
Robert B. Parker

Audio Literature, 1995

Catharsis, Cathexis, What's Next-us? Purgative Pushes to Personality Paradise
When a great writer dramatizes trapped helplessness, I'm ready to eject. I almost squirmed out of reading # 22 in the Spenser series. But, this being the 27th novel I would have read in this 34 book series, I pushed like a Navy Seal through the first couple italicized segments of the kidnaping and ensuing situation, using the "hang in there" ropes provided by the characters' depth of commitment ...

Before Their Time: The World of Child Labor2 reviews
David Parker

Quantuck Lane, 2007

A must for every library and school
Dr. David Parker is a superb photojournalist and an advocate for one of the worlds most unforgivable problems. Child labour. This is one book that should be shown to school children worldwide as well as adults who don't quite get a gist of what goes on in Third World Countries. One of the best photo documentaries I have ever read. I hope it appears in every library and school. It will not ...

Pacific Beat11 reviews
T. Jefferson Parker

Brilliance Audio on CD Unabridged, 2008

A must read for this author
Parker delivers a truly mesmerizing book and one of the very best I've read in this entire genre (SoCal, mystery, fiction). He is so right on point with his interwoven storylines and satisfying plot/setting/characters, with the last 50 pages or so being such an exceptional example of a craftsman's finishing-touch prowess. Highly recommended.
