The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace44 reviews
David Reynolds

DK CHILDREN, 1999

Great answers for "Mommy, what's that called?"
We have a 4 1/2 year old daughter obsessed with the Star Wars girls (Shaak Ti in particular) and this is good because it tells all about the different charachters, places, vehicles and robots of the movie in easy to understand, yet complete language. Very good for the little Star Wars fan or anyone who would like to go a little deeper, but not THAT deep.

David West Reynolds

DK CHILDREN, 2002

Great book for the Star Wars fans
My son and his friends are big Star Wars fans. They are all between the ages of 5-8. They loved this book. They really enjoyed finding out all the details in the movie. While my son watches the movies he looks up and reads about the movie. It is a great book. Lots of fun...

Constructive Living (Kolowalu Books)7 reviews
David K. Reynolds

University of Hawaii Press, 1984

Short, simple, effective
I was lost. It seemed to me that Western psychological theories were largely speculation and confident assertion and not much help. Krishnamurti made some great sense but I'd been unable after years to put his teaching into practice. What a welcome relief to find David Reynolds and "Constructive Living". The emphasis on doing what one can do may seem simple. However, I had become so complicated ...

Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson (American History)5 reviews
David S. Reynolds

Harper, 2008

A Cultural History Of The Age Of Jackson
There have been made fine books on the era between the War of 1812 and the Civil War that was dominated by Andrew Jackson. From the Pulitzer Prize winning "The Age of Jackson" by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. (1945) to Robert Remini's three volume biography of Jackson (1977, 1981, 1984), the field have been dominant with political histories. Mr. Reynolds takes a different approach with politics taking ...

David West Reynolds, James Luceno

DK CHILDREN, 2006

May the force be with you!
If you're a Star Wars fan like me you're going to love this book. I love DK books because they are so vivid. They have pictures along with a detailed description of the character, ship, droid of equipment. It even shows you pictures of characters that you don't really see in the movies. If you're not familiar with the movies this books will definitely get you on the right track as well as ...

Walt Whitman's America: A Cultural Biography7 reviews
David S. Reynolds

Vintage, 1996

The best biography of Whitman available
I'm a latecomer to Whitman's work, only really discovering it in the past decade. (I'm in my 40s.) It was Reynold's book Beneath the American Renaissance that prodded me in this direction, and, naturally, I wanted to read his more complete take on Walt. What stands out in this book is the way Reynolds weaves together not only Whitman's life but also the context of the period, which makes it so ...

Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass (150th Anniversary Edition)70 reviews
Walt Whitman

Oxford University Press, USA, 2005

THE SOURCE of ALL American Prose/Poesy
Hemingway said all American writing comes from one book, Huck Finn. Wrong! He also believed himself a better writer than Fitzgerald. Wrong! I'm no literary expert, I haven't gone to Harvard or Yale or any of those overpriced universities for spoiled rich kids but in my expert opinion all American literature: rhythm, length, flow, syntax, form, etc., came from one book & this is it. Henry ...

The Visual Dictionary of Star Wars, Episodes IV, V, & VI: The Ultimate Guide to Star Wars Characters and ...43 reviews
David Reynolds

DK CHILDREN, 1998

Very informative!
This was one of my very first Star Wars books and I half credit it with my burgeoning interest in the expanded Star Wars universe. Includes great pictures and information such as what those little knobs on Darth Vader's chestplate are for to what exactly Salacious Crumb (that little Kowakian monkey lizard that works for Jabba the Hutt) does! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, then ...

Savage Species: Playing Monstrous Characters (Dungeons & Dragons Supplement)18 reviews
David Eckelberry, Jennifer Clarke Wilkes, ...

Wizards of the Coast, 2003

Review for the Savage Species
It's a good aid for dungeon masters. Expecially when characters want to play something other than the standard character classes. Many worked out examples and lots of guidelines for setting up your own monsters as player characters.

Summits3 reviews
David Reynolds

Basic Books, 2007

Excellent Historical Study
This was a brilliant idea for a 20th century history. Absolutely entertaining, it gives you an angle on many major events of the last sorrowful century that is unusual. Reynolds has an ideal diplomat's sensibility: he sees both sides' fears, strengths and vulnerabilities, and he has a good overall perspective, an ability to weigh the true importance of words and events. The greatest benefit ...

Handbook for Constructive Living (Latitude 20 Book)2 reviews
David K. Reynolds

University of Hawaii Press, 2002

A clear-as-a-bell guide to focused and purposeful living.
The last self-help book you'll need. David Reynolds offers a concise and practical summary of this practical approach to life, its problems, and its pleasures that originated in Japan. Of all his books, this was, for me, the most accessible. Constructive Living helps the readers shift their focus from their own problems and emotions (the primary focus on Western psychotherapy) to the world ...

John Brown, Abolitionist: The Man Who Killed Slavery, Sparked the Civil War, and Seeded Civil Rights27 reviews
David S. Reynolds

Vintage, 2006

When is a fanatic not a fanatic?
Highly enjoyable read. Not written at arm's length; It's clear that Reynolds "gets" John Brown and the age he lived in, so his heart and imagination are fully engaged as he writes. He doesn't hide Brown's humanity however. What bothered me the most was that Brown seemed to harden his heart toward his wounded son at Harpers Ferry. (How it appeared to observers apparently.) All in all though ...

New Mexico, Rio Grande, and Other Essays2 reviews
Tony Hillerman

Graphic Arts Center Publishing Company, 1992

If you love New Mexico, buy this book
If you ever read books of Tony Hillerman, be sure to take a look at this book. His love of the state of New Mexico is well known by readers of the Jim Chee/Joe Leaphorn Mysteries, but this book is about the overwhelming beauty of the state. The vast open spaces, the silence and the history. This collection of essays together with the outstanding photographs is a must.

Incredible Cross-sections of Star Wars, Episode I - The Phantom Menace: The Definitive Guide to the Craft32 reviews
David Reynolds, David West Reynolds

DK CHILDREN, 1999

A definate for vehicle lovers!
I always wanted to see more and to be able to look inside of the vehicles more closely, and this book provides that information (and more more) in great detail. I really like the mini illustrations of where in the vehicles that events from the movies took place, it helps to "put a name to a face".

The Quaker City, Or, the Monks of Monk Hall: A Romance of Philadelphia Life, Mystery, and Crime3 reviews
George Lippard

University of Massachusetts Press, 1995

A Peculiar, Enticing Novel
This is a long, sprawling, peculiar novel, but one that I always enjoy going back to. I forget, every time I reread it, how wonderful and strange an adventure it is! Lippard is a minor figure in American letters, inspired by early American masters such as Charles Brockden Brown and popular French novelists such as Eugen Sue. The Quaker City is certainly a flawed work, but it is only more ...

Playing Ball on Running Water: The Japanese Way to Building a Better Life3 reviews
David K. Reynolds

Quill, 1984

Blueprint for a purposeful life
"Playing Ball on Running Water" by David K. Reynolds is a book that advocates conscious living. The subtitle belays that concept, "The Japanese Way to Building a Better Life." Reynolds takes the Morita psychotherapeutic concepts and adapts them to Western life. The whole basis for this Morita approach is to live life by doing it. Doing it conscientious, with full awareness. This approach is ...
