Children of the Promise, Vol. 2: Since You Went Away
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book Company, 2005

Wally Thomas didn?t know how many days and nights he had been marching up the coast of the Bataan Peninsula. He was almost too numb to think, too full of pain. He tried to keep a steady pace, but the guards pressured the prisoners to keep moving, forced them close together, and in their exhaustion the men stumbled and knocked each other off stride. When that happened, the extra effort was almost overwhelming; there were times when Wally ...

Children of the Promise, Vol. 3: Far From Home
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book Company, 2005

?All right, let?s go.? Alex saw terror in Howie?s eyes as he took off before Alex could. Howie ran hard, angling back and forth only a little, mostly just getting as far away as afast as he could. Alex was a faster runner, and he could make a few more zigs and zags in his path and still keep up. For a time, it all seemed unnecessary. The two were keeping away from the road, and no one else was nearby. But then bullets began to thump into ...

A Book Worth Reading
As a book reviewer for a newspaper and a wary reader of Christian Fiction, I was happily surprised by this book. The characters are heartwarming and real. The setting is a great choice since we all admire those that survived and triumphed during the depression years. Somehow as we face our own fears during economic and family difficulties we are able to learn from the characters in the novel. The ...

The Cost of Winning: Coming in First Across the Wrong Finish Line
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book, 2008

Life is not a contest. Why do we make it one and, in the process, make ourselves unhappy and distant from the Lord? Bestselling author Dean Hughes suggests some ways to "get out of the game," shedding a lot of what doesn't matter and focusing on what does. "When I stand before the Lord to answer for my life," he writes, "I'm certain that He is going to ask me a very different set of questions from the ones the world asks me. It seems important, ...

Children of the Promise, Vol. 1: Rumors of War
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book Company, 2005

The elders could see nothing but smoke until they turned the corner onto the street where the fire was. And then, both of them stopped. ?The synagogue!? Elder Thomas said. It had never occurred to him that anyone ? even the Nazis ? would do such a thing. Elder Thomas got his camera out. He snapped the shot but then heard someone say, in German, ?What are you doing there?? He tucked the camera inside his coat, under his arm. He tried ...

Children of the Promise, Vol. 4: When We Meet Again
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book Company, 2006

Alex knew some time had passed when he came back to consciousness. He was lying on his back, looking up toward the sun. There were four faces over him now, and one of the men said, "Get up. You're a prisoner of war." "I'm an American." "You can tell that story to someone else. We're going to turn you over." "What about Otto? He's a German, but he's working for us." "He's not working for nobody now. He's dead. Now get up." Following the Battle ...

Simon Pulse, 2008

Reprinted from the Aug 2006 "The Historical Novels Review"
Rick Ward, a confused boy from Long Beach just out of high school, drifts into the army. He may be running away from an overbearing father, a pointless existence of beach parties, or perhaps he just needs to do something meaningful. In that spirit he goes to Vietnam and volunteers for the Charlie Rangers, an elite group who infiltrate the jungle to beat the enemy at their own game. He wants to ...

Where's the next one?!
This book is great. I am struggling (still) with finding good books to read, but I finished this one in about 5 days and I even work full time and have stuff going on every night. Great touching story and I can't wait for the next one!!

As Long As I Have You (Children of the Promise, Volume 5)3 reviews
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book, 2000

An Excellent End to an Excellent Series
I love this book. Three months ago I was hooked on the first book and kept going until I finished them all. When you find good books such as the "Children of the Promise" series you don't want them to stop coming. So I am sad that this is the last book in the series. But this book is a fitting way to end a wonderful series of well written books.

Dean Hughes

Deseret Book Company, 1997

I couldn't put it down
My only warning for this book is that you won't be able to do anything else - you'll just want to keep reading. This book is especially great for anyone who likes WWII history. I liked it!

When We Meet Again (Children of the Promise, Vol. 4)2 reviews
Dean Hughes

Deseret Book Co, 2001

Writing at its best
Dean Hughes is the best. He has the talent of writing a story that immediately brings you into the thick of it. This is a series of WW2 novels, with 5 volumes being in the first series. You feel for what this family is going through as they try and cope with World War 2. Best of all, they are "clean" books. None of the smut and dirty language. Dean doesn't need any of that. He writes a ...

How Many Roads: A Novel (Hughes, Dean, Hearts of the Children, V. 3.)1 review
Dean Hughes

Bookcraft, 2004

How Many Roads: A Novel
Once again, I was completely captivated by Dean Hughes and his continuation of the Thomas family story. His history and insights in the turbulant times of the 60's opened my eyes to the many trials people faced.

Children of the Promise, Vol. 3: Far from Home

Deseret Book, 1998

In Far from Home, the third volume in Dean Hughes's best-selling series, Children of the Promise, Alex Thomas is still battling the Nazi forces. He's also worried about whether or not he can preserve the lives of the men in his company, especially Howie, a particularly young and inexperienced soldier. But his biggest concern is staying alive for his new bride, Anna, in England. In Japan, Wally is still a prisoner of war. abused by his captors, ...
