The Battle for Iwo Jima 19453 reviews
Derrick Wright

The History Press, 2007

Excellent book
I first got this book to understand why my grand father hardly spoke of being on Iwo, and now i know. This book may be short, but it is good for the people who are curious about one of the Marines bloodiest battles. I will definatly use this book for reference when i write a scriopt about Iwo Jima in the future.

Tarawa 1943 (Trade Editions)5 reviews
Derrick Wright

Osprey Publishing, 2001

Very informative
I found this book very informative of a battle I did not know much about. The photos, maps and illustrations were wonderful as I got to understand this battle. It was a very costly battle for the Marines as they took this island with over 3,000 casualties against 5,000 defenders. It also showed what was about to happen later in the war as the Japanese got more fanatical and used "banzai" ...

Iwo Jima 1945: The Marines raise the flag on Mount Suribachi (Campaign)2 reviews
Derrick Wright

Osprey Publishing, 2001

Captures Scope of Battle
Iwo Jima 1945: The Marines Raise the Flag on Mount Suribachi (Campaign, 81)by Derek Wright is written in typical Ospery fashion. What makes it different from most of the other books in the series is the ablity of the author in very few pages to capture the heroism, death and wanton destruction that accompanied the battle to take control of the tiny island. Wright does a magnificant job helping ...

To the Far Side of Hell: The Battle for Peleliu, 19441 review
Derrick Wright

Crowood Press (UK), 2003

Peleliu Was a Bitch
Peleliu was a bitch. Bad intelligence, new Japanese tactics, horrible terrain, tired troops, vegetation that hid the rough terrain all combined to change the estimated three day campaign to put down a few hundred Japanese troops lasted for 71 days of truly vicious fighting by the 10,500 Japanese troops dug into the caves and hidden. It has even been argued that the invasion of Peleliu wasn't ...

Hell of a Way to Die Taraww 20-23 November 1943: Tarawa Atoll, 20-23 November, 19432 reviews
Derrick Wright

Casemate Pub, 1997

Well detailed gripping account of pure hell
This work takes you from an outline of the Pacific war so far, through the crucial planning stages, detailing the lack of imformation about the objective that was to prove fatal to so many good men and culminates in a blow by blow account of the action itself. Many eye witness testimonies bring the action to life and you find yourself along side them, sheltering behind the bullet raked log sea ...

Hell in the Pacific: The Battle for Iwo Jima (General Military)
Derrick Wright, Gordon Rottman

Osprey Publishing, 2008

The battle of Iwo Jima was extraordinary for its ferocity. US Marine Corps casualties exceeded by thousands the number of Japanese defenders, who fought almost to the last man over those five desperate weeks. The strategic justification for the mission has been challenged and the iconic photograph of the flag-raising was staged, but there is no questioning the courage displayed (winning the USMC 24 Medals of Honor) and the horrors endured by ...

Pacific Victory: Tarawa to Okinawa 1943-19451 review
Derrick Wright

The History Press, 2005

a great read
I live on the edge of the pacific and have always found this campaign fascinating. This book gave a great overview of the whole island hopping campaign, well supported by maps and photos of the battlefields from back then and also the present day. For the first time I got a really good understanding of the time and space and progression of the hard fought battles. As the quote on the back ...
