Words Their Way: Word Sorts for Within Word Pattern Spellers1 review
Marcia Invernizzi, Francine Johnston, ...

Prentice Hall, 2003

Helpful for teaching spelling in a child-centered way
This book is helpful for offering a plan to teach spelling through word sorts. The steps are included, as are the words for each sort in an easy to copy format. I have found it useful after giving a whole class spelling assessment to teach small groups using these books. This allows me to better reach each child based on what she/he needs to be taught. I recommend this book along with others in ...

Words Their Way: Word Study for Phonics, Vocabulary, and Spelling Instruction35 reviews
Donald R. Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, ...

Merrill Publishing Company, 1995

Very useful for homeschoolers too...
My children attended a public school where this program was used. When I brought them home due to their various LDs/allergies, I balked at the $40 price tag of this book and opted for the less expensive Spectrum Spelling books for their grade level. I found those to be rather annoying because often my children already knew the words. And the ones they didn't know, they would spell correctly on ...

Words Their Way with English Learners: Word Study for Spelling, Phonics, and Vocabulary Instruction (Words ...4 reviews

Words Their Way is the Best!
I use Words Their Way in my classroom all the time. I love the way it teaches my students to spell logically and developmentally. I can tell a lot about my students understanding about how English words are written and pronounced by the way they read and spell a word. This book is specifically about English Language Learners and that is an even greater asset. I have used Words Their Way with ...

A Great Tool
This book is very helpful in meeting students' individual spelling needs. It's nice to have the lists prepared for you and short instructional summaries to bring yourself up to speed on word patterns--things you don't even realize you know! The book is well-organized and offers success for all.

Words Their Way Letter and Picture Sorts for Emergent Spellers (2nd Edition) (Words Their Way Series)3 reviews
Donald R. Bear, Marcia Invernizzi, ...

Prentice Hall, 2008

A MUST for K-2 teachers.
Like the other Words their Way materials, this volume continues the wonderful tradition of combining excellent teaching ideas with the black line masters so you can use the strategies immediately. This level is especially appropriate for students learning letter/sound relationships. It gives dozens of poems and stories which have sorts to support teaching them. There are old faithfuls such as ...

Development of Orthographic Knowledge and the Foundations of Literacy: A Memorial Festschrift for edmund H. ...

Lawrence Erlbaum, 1992

This volume unites spelling and word recognition -- two areas that have largely remained theoretically and empirically distinct. Despite considerable advances in the investigation of processes underlying word perception and the acknowledgement of the seminal importance of lexical access in the reading and writing processes, to date the development and functioning of orthographic knowledge across both encoding and decoding contexts has rarely ...

Teaching Writing Balancing& Wrd Their Way Pk6 reviews
Gail E. Tompkins, Donald R. Bear, ...

Not Avail, 2003

Good Stuff
This book is an excellent resource for teachers. It is full of great ideas and of lessons for writing. It is also very helpful to those teachers who are reluctant to have their students write daily. The feature that I like best is that the author includes great trade book lists to assist the teacher in modeling good writing.

Letter Name Spellers
This is a great resource for first and second grade teachers. Many of the skills addressed are those encountered in your classroom daily. Great companion to Words Their Way, and to offer a hands on opportunity for phonics, spelling and decoding words.

Words Their Way: Words Sorts for Derivational Relations Spellers1 review
Francine Johnston, Donald R. Bear, ...

Prentice Hall, 2005

Another Great Words Their Way Book!
I own all the other Words Their Way books so why not this one? Most of the time I do not get spellers this sophisticated but some of my ESOL students this year are good spellers. I think these word sorts will help those students become even better spellers than they are and comprehend vocabulary more deeply.
