Is Sex Necessary?: Or Why You Feel the Way You Do3 reviews
James Thurber, E. B. White

Harper Perennial, 2004

What a romp!
Thurber's and White's text satirizing the hullabaloo that our dearest lunatic, Mr. Sigmund Freud, began takes whatever cake is being handed out for satirical writing. It's universally funny, lucid, and did I mention funny? It's hilarious. One should pull out one's thesaurus at this point to find other such words, and all will be a propos. The book should have been a trilogy.

Writings from The New Yorker 1927-19766 reviews
E. B. White

Harper Perennial, 2006

read it again--and again
I say, and not for the first time or after reading his first book (I've read them all, again and again) that anyone who wants to learn to write contemporary English as it should be written should close himself in a room with EB White for as long as it takes. He or she might even learn to be a better person from the example.

Topeka Bindery, 1999

Another family favorite
The Trumpet of the Swan turned out to be another big hit for my family and I to share together. You know you have a big hit with my kids when they will do whatever you ask of them just so you will sit there and read the next chapter!! TOTS is told from a number of different perspectives. It starts off from the perspective of Sam Beaver, a young boy from Montana on vacation with his father in ...

Little Bookroom, 2000

A Love Letter to New York City
HERE IS NEW YORK is a truly spectacular 1948 essay that originally appeared in Holiday magazine. Written by E.B. White and named one of the ten best books ever written about New York, this is a quick read that will leave you years later savoring White's timeless observations. Writing in a hotel room during a sweltering heat wave, White takes the reader through the essence of New York City and ...

Charlotte's Web Weekly Reader Childrens Book Club421 reviews
E. B. White

Harber & Row, 1971

One of the Greats
I have read this classic to my kids (and to myself, decades ago), and two of my daughters have read it too. My 10-year old says that she find it believeable, even with the talking animals. By that, I think that she appreciates the humanization of the animal characters. This is a story, tenderly told, about life and death, friendship, selfishness and generosity, and generally what it means to ...

The Annotated Charlotte's Web4 reviews
E.B. White

HarperTrophy, 1997

An excellent companion to the original book.
I purchased this book several years ago to give me more insight into E.B. White's classic novel. Every time I read and re-read the notes, rewrites and history of this touching story for children, I find myself learning so much more about the writing style of this fabulous author. The photographs of White's farmhouse add texture and depth to the story and my first grade students appreciated ...

E. B. White

Audio Bookshelf, 2001

Got a Daschound?
Worth the price for the cut "Letter To The I.R.S." Alone! If you've got a dachshund, any dog, and had to leave them, been audited, lived in New York or Maine, or just need to have a smile today, this will do it!. By the author of "Charlotte's Web" and read by Mr. White's son, Joel. A perfect voice, and the right pacing and inflection for reading his Dad's work. A smile at least; probably a loud ...

E. B. White

HarperCollins, 2006

This book depicts the importance of family & friendship
West's Time Machine George's Pond: Created in the Beloved Tradition of Charlotte's Web Being a children's author and teacher, I often enjoy reading Charlotte's Web as a child and now I enjoy reading the book to my son and my students. I think part of the reason this book has remained one of my favorites is because of the classic friendship between Wilbur and Charlotte. Both characters ...

Charlottes Web1 review
E.B. White

Harper & Row, 1952

Charlotte's Web Book Review
The author has used very discriptive words and lets people understand what he is saying by letting us visualise what he imagines. My favorite part was when Charlotte met Wilbur and they became friends. I highly recomend this book for kids ages 6 to 13. This book shows the true meaning of friendship. it is the best book ever written!

Essays of E.B. White18 reviews
E. B. White

Peter Smith Pub Inc, 2001

Word genius
Twenty two of the essays appeared in THE NEW YORKER. White had candor. His piece on the death of his pig is masterful. He examined his own feelings and community reaction. The role of his dachshund, Fred, is described amusingly. It is no wonder White wrote so winningly for children. In 1954 when he had no television he was looked upon as an eccentric. During Hurricane Edna radio worked ...
