The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Vietnamese Edition 2 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford University Press, USA, 1990
ESOL class This picture dictionary is one that is most requested by my students. It is easy to use when they want words by subject. I find it useful in helping me to understand their languages as well. It's not of much value for looking up words alphabetically, but for that we have bilingual dictionaries. It's worth keeping in my classroom library, but is a frequent theft item. Other teachers might need ...

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: Monolingual English Edition 7 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford University Press, USA, 1988
Excellent resource I use this book a lot even for adult ESL students. I find this a great resource for one of the basic ESL techniques--describe the picture. I've also used the verb pages to practice tenses. Pages on prepositions are also very good. The pictures are clear and easy to understand.

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Korean Edition (Oxford American English) 2 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford University Press, USA, 1990
Great Teaching Aid! Best book I've found in nine years to teach Korean speakers conversational English! The book is clear and concise with great pictures. The only change I would make for future publications would be to add the phonetic spelling of each word using Korean characters. This would be a plus in addition to the Korean word(s) for the pictured items. I highly recommend this book for all Korean ...

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Chinese Edition (Oxford American English) 3 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford University Press, USA, 1989
Great for lower level students. I use multiple versions of this book to help my students (mostly beginning and intermediate) enlarge their English vocabulary. I am currently using the Spanish-English, Chinese-English and Korean-English versions. I believe that they are good books, and very useful as supplements to ESL classes. THE GOOD: 1) The book is organized nicely for teaching beginning level students. It is ...

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary English/Russian: English Russian Edition (Oxford American English) 12 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford University Press, USA, 1994
very helpful part of a language program As an ESL tutor I simply love these books. Each page provides a lesson's worth of vocab for practice in sentences. The latter pages (eg. prepositions) are less useful when tutoring someone illiterate in their own language, especially if the tutor is not bilingual, but because the pictures are so clear, even point-and-say usually works. True, these books don't have any pronunciation guides for ...

Components: Vocabulary Playing Cards (The New Oxford Picture Dictionary) 3 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford University Press, USA, 1988
Good for their intended purpose I don't understand why some people don't understand that the Oxford Picture Dictionary and its various accoutrements are intended for helping people learn English. The bilingual editions are for people who want a little extra help by having the words in their native languages in addition to the English words. They might also be useful for an English person learning one of those other languages, ...

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary English Polish: English/Polish Edition (Oxford American English) 1 review E. C. Parnwell

good color pictures These picture books are excellent. Unlike this one, most of them are in black and white line drawings. This one has color pictures which is better. It's a good way to familiarize yourself with a foreign word.

Oxford Picture Dictionary of American English: Spanish and English 2 reviews E. C. Parnwell
Oxford Univ Pr Childrens Books, 1978
This is a great book for pre-schoolers! I checked this book out of the library and it is wonderful! I am using it to teach my 3 year olds Spanish. There are colorful pictures by category, for example, animals, with the English and Spanish names for each word. It is too bad that this book is out of print!

The New Oxford Picture Dictionary: English-Navajo Editon 1 review E. C. Parnwell, Marvin Yellowhair
Oxford University Press, USA, 1990
Dubious and inappropriate. I'm not one to look a gift horse in the mouth, esp. given the dearth of teaching materials for any Native languages. But being shown how to say "brandy snifter" or "Pluto" in Navajo does make one wonder about the cultural applicability of these endeavors. (This reminds me of the Duden dictionaries that used the same illustration-templates for every edition -- based on the German -- so that in the ...
