Spacehounds Of IPC4 reviews
Edward E. "Doc" Smith

Pyramid Books, 1973

Moons of Jupiter, then and now.
Edward E. Smith, Ph.D, in addition to being the foremost writer of all time about "Space Opera" was in many ways a visionary, and with his "Skylark" and "Lensman Series" constructed a universe so filled with spacefaring heroes and weird and wonderful aliens of all description as to boggle the imagination. Unlike the two series mentioned above, Spacehounds of IPC was a "stand alone" book about a ...

Skylark DuQuesne (Vintage Pyramid X-1539)1 review
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Pyramid Books, 1966

The spaciest space opera ever
Science fiction can be a serious examination of social issues, or a study of human character in a changing world, or a simple tribute to the majesty of all that we know and all that we don't. Then there's Doc Smith. His super-powered Frat Boys in Space, Seaton and Crane, leap with ADHD attention span from one world-shattering cataclysm to the next - including the ones they cause themselves. ...

Edward. E. ("Doc") Smith

This is the best there is
I have read this series at least 4 times. If you like SCIFI, you will cherish these books and buy the whole collection (as I did).

Imperial Stars (Family D'Alembert Series #1)3 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith, Stephen Goldin

Pyramid Publications, 1976

This book is the first of many in a great series.
If you plan on reading any of the Family D'Alembert series, then I strongly reccomend that you read this first. It sets the plot and introduces the main characters. Frankly, without reading this book, you will probably get lost in the others!

Triplanetary (Lensman Series #1) (Vintage Pyramid SF, N2890)54 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Pyramid Books, 1973

"Galactic Patrol" is THE classic 1950's space epic
The Lensmen series comprises the following books: 1 - Triplanetary 2 - First Lensman 3 - Galactic Patrol 4 - Gray Lensman 5 - Second-Stage Lensman 6 - Children of the Lens Without exaggeration, the "Galactic Patrol" series is one of the greatest classic space epics ever written, it's one of the greatest archetypes of the genre as a whole, and virtually all of the modern masters ...

The Clockwork Traitor (Family d'Alembert Series, #3)1 review
Edward. E. ("Doc") Smith, Stephen Goldin

Pyramid Publications, 1977

Clockwork Traitor
Not bad.Not one of the best Family d'Alembert novels but not bad.

Stranglers' Moon (Family d'Alembert Series #2)1 review
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith, Stephen Goldin

Berkley Books, 1982

Short, fast-paced and boring
From the writing, contrived incidents and wooden characters one would suspect this was written for teenagers. But the setting, on a moon of vice called Vesa, belies this. Jules and Yvette are sent to Vesa to investigate an underground series of kidnappings - apparently 30 people go missing a day but the compromised authorities have let this happen for 20 years! Every character cliche is ...

Chronicles of the Lensmen (The Lensmen Series, Volume 2)4 reviews
Edward E. (Doc) Smith

Old Earth Books, 1998

Lensmen Series, vol 1 & 2
This series and Alfred Bester's "The Stars My Destination" empassioned my desire for the stars and science fiction. Star Trek and Star Wars would not be the stories they are or have the impact they do without the forward thinking of EE Doc Smith and Bester. These stories enthralled me as a youth and still capture my imagination 30+ years later. Volume 1 and 2 are "must haves" for any serious ...

Second Stage Lensmen (Vintage Pyramid SF, T2169)9 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Pyramid Books, 1970

Read this third!
I (and many others) believe the best place to start with Doc Smith's "Lensman" series is Galactic Patrol; and as I've said why, at length, in my review of that opus, I won't repeat it here. Furthermore, if you've already read "Patrol" and Gray Lensman with enjoyment, you'll hardly need my urging to continue. This is nonetheless probably the weakest of the four main Lensman novels, mainly ...

Skylark Three (Skylark Series #2)7 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Berkley Books, 1980

If you can find this book, buy it!
I first read this book during the golden age- fourteen that is. Yet it has held a special place in my mind and heart ever since. It still gives me a thrill to think about this book even though I am now 49 going on 50. For sheer breadth of imagination, scope of theme and pace of action it is one of the best books I have ever read. It is ,of course, sadly dated by todays standards- but you must ...

The Galaxy Primes (Ace SF, 27291)5 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Ace Books, 1971

Hey, Let's unify the galaxy!
You didn't have anything else planned for the afternoon, right? "Belle" Bellamy (green-haired super-babe) and Clee Garlock (super everything else) are the two people on Earth with the highest innate degree of that amazing psionic-thingie. With it, their minds can hurl them between star systems, detonate nuclear blasts, and do lots of other neat tricks. In their interstellar gadding, they ...

Subspace Encounter1 review
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Berkley, 1983

Another Smith Spectacular!
This is the last book Smith wrote before he died, and it had to be put together and completed after his death. To those who have read a lot of Smith, there will be a slight difference in the style. This, however, does nothing to change the fact that it is a wonderful story and extremely entertaining. It takes up the saga of the psionic experts after the North American political election, ...

Subspace Explorers4 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Ace H-102, 1965

E.E. "Doc" Smith's best book!
There are some that swear by the Lensman series, others by the Skylark series, but personally, I go for the single books like Subspace Explorers. Unlike many of E.E. "Doc" Smith's books, this book actually has women as capable, thinking (and of course, loving) beings. It even contains references to sex! The story line is great, although of course fantastical, and altogether a rollicking read.

Planet of Treachery (Family D'Alembert, Bk. 7)
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Berkley, 1982

Classic space opera adventure, Book #7 in the "Family D'Alembert" series. For centuries, the planet Gastonia has been a planet of exile, an escape-proof prison world for the worst sorts of traitors. But now, it seems, prisoners are indeed escaping, and all evidence points to the sinister, all-knowing conspiracy that continues to shadow the Throne. The d'Alemberts must infiltrate this world of traitors--and they must do it without a safety net, ...

The Skylark of Space (Vintage Pyramid SF, T-2232)16 reviews
Edward E. ("Doc") Smith

Pyramid Books, 1970

Good ol' fashion sci/fi
This is sciece fiction in the grand old "Buck Rogers" style. Written in 1928 it is interesting to see it talking about atomic energy long before it was ever developed. It is also interesting to see the slang used in those days such as a great deed referred to as "A flash and a loud report" or a liar refered to as "A man with a paper nose". Campy to the max.

Gray Lensman (Pyramid X-1245)1 review
Edward E."Doc" Smith

Pyramid, 1965

Read this second!
I (and many others) believe the best place to start with Doc Smith's "Lensman" series is Galactic Patrol; and as I've said why, at length, in my review of that opus, I won't repeat it here. "Gray Lensman" begins where "Patrol" left off, and never flags, from the start to the finish. Smith at this point is a massively improved writer from the author of the earlier Skylark series, and much ...
