Classic music lovers' sourcebook gets better and better
After purchasing The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings: Eighth Edition (Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings) and being very happy with it, this was an obvious choice for me to start getting a handle on my classical music collection. The book is well organized and attempts to be comprehensive, but given the expanse of classical music available, invariably some of your personal favorite recordings will ...

The 2004/5 supplement to the 2003/4 main guide
Be sure you know what you are getting here: this is a SUPPLEMENT (736 pages) to the 2003/4 COMPLETE Penguin Guide (1616 pages). The main Penguin Guide lists the TOP-RATED CD RECOMMENDATIONS. This supplement lists additional recommendations (less important and new since last book) and some lesser-rated CD's. Additionally, the "Yearbook" supplement here lists some unique recordings: (1) their ...

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2006

Handy guide for aficionados, but bear in mind its limitations
I'd like to clear up some misconceptions here. The Penguin Guide covers classical music CDs released in Britain since the last edition of the Guide. It's a British publication intended to assist British buyers to sort through what is currently available *in Britain*, so it's silly to complain about "bias". And if every CD of every work ever released was included, the Guide would be unfeasibly ...

Well-Worn and Dog-Eared!
I purchase an average of 6-8 complete opera CDs per annum, and find this book very valuable in their selection. These authors "know their stuff" -please let them know how much we opera buffs appreciate their book and how about an update? Lots of new recordings(not to mention singers) in the last eight years!! Please keep a good reference going....

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2003

A premium product!
This book is one of several that provide reviews of recorded classical music. However, in my humble opinion, I have found the Penguin guide provides the best guidance to the merits (or otherwise) of a classical recording. I also feel it to be the most comprehesive of the books I have seen on this subject matter (and as such, is quite substantial in size). The presentation style of the book ...

penguin rules!
I found the guide to contain a lot of esoteric titles listed that I did't even listen too.

Still useful reviews
A book I am keeping in my library for the useful reviews of individual performances of classical music. Even "out-of-date" books have their uses.

How can you go wrong...?
Buying CD's is expensive...the Penguin Classical CD/DVD is a must. Why? Because it will save you alot of money...period. Whether you agree with every review or not, if you buy CD's...you can for the price of one get help in deciding which to buy, and which to stay from. I have used my guide alot, and usually end up completely agreeing with the reviews. Buy it...you'll like it.

Bargain CDs 1998-1999, The Penguin Guide to: Second Edition (Penguin Guide to Bargain Compact Discs)2 reviews
Ivan March, Edward Greenfield, ...

Puffin, 1999

Invaluable for the collector or bargain hunter.
This volume of the Penguin Guide focuses on mid-range, budget and super budget CDs only. It is a complement to the 1996 guide as well as the 1998 update. It is particularly interesting because it reviews many older yet famous recordings that I was not familiar with and makes collecting easier and less risk taking as it rates sound quality. It's nice to know that many great recordings are ...
