Art Deco Painting

A must-have for Deco enthusiasts, and for painters
I just adore this book, and it never fails to inspire me. This book is of particular interest to those who have already been fans of the Art Deco style-- both in its European and American manifestations-- for many years. Why? Because many survey books on Deco tend to include many of the same, familiar images of posters-- the Cassandre prints (albeit fabulous), etc. But this ...

Amazing, A Comprehensive, but Interesting Look at Sex in Western Art
This really is a wonderfully done book. It's well written, beautifully illustrated, nicely laid out and it's printed on a slick, glossy paper that allows for decent reproductions of the art being discussed. The volume starts out at the dawn of art with Paleolithic man when "art is fused with the erotic and sacred." The book covers art from the so-called "prehistoric Venuses," cave paintings and ...

Very useful
Extremely useful reference - to learn proper meaning of terms, and to realize that most of art critics are ignorant.

The Gold Standard on American Realism Painting
Edward Lucie-Smith's inimitable style of writing endears him to his readers who might just be buying art books for the pictures - the ubiquitous coffeetable book. His approach to his subject (and his catalogue of published books on art is staggering in scope) is always 'Art first, Opinion second', which is another way of saying that he lets the work describe itself in the sensitive way in which ...
Sculpture Since 1945

Lucid and insightful
Use this book for a first tour of sculpture since 1945. Mr. Lucie-Smith is a fine writer (try some of his other books on art); one could tag him "Lucid Smith." There are many pithy summaries. His text is a joy to read just for the fun of reading it. Used copies are readily available, so a hardback version can be as cheap as a decent magazine.

A magical bestiary tour for art lovers
Zoo is a small-in-size book, but it is brimming over with clever juxtapositions of styles, periods, techniques of making art about animals. We are again indebted to Lucie-Smith for spicing this beautifully designed, written and illustrated treatise with works by contemporary artists who are perhaps not yet known to the world at large in the company of their famous colleagues. How often are ...
