Best Book Ever!!!!
I totally disagree with the two reviews below! This was a wonderful book detailing an amazing part of history. The characters were well developed and the storyline was gripping. I felt connected to all of the characters in this book and I loved the fact that the story was historically accurate. I thoroughly enjoyed it from beginning to end and I will definitly look for other books written by this ...

Starting School with an Enemy3 reviews
Elisa Carbone, Mary GrandPre, ...

Yearling, 1999

Great book written like kids would really write it.
I think it was a good book. I am eleven years old and I should know what it would be like starting school with an enemy. After all, I am a kid. My mom also got a big laugh out of this book.

READ THIS
This book is the greatest. Beautiful! You make such a bond with all the charactrs. The book deals with all sorts of issues, raceism and school violence. The end of the book is shocking and I even cried at the end. Read this book, its wonderful, the begginning starts slow, but it gets going very fast and you wont want to put it down!

Last Dance on Holladay Street2 reviews
Elisa Carbone

Laurel Leaf, 2006

Eva Is Awesome! So is Elisa!
I'd recently read Elisa Carbone's wonderful _Storm Warriors_, set on North Carolina's Outer Banks, and found _Last Dance_ at the library. It's just as meticulously researched and carefully crafted as _Storm Warriors_, not to mention just as much of a good read. Even though I'm a 44-year-old woman, I found myself admiring 13-year-old Eva and thinking what a good mentor she is. To say she ...

Dr. Ellwood Harvey, the real person behind "Dr. H"
My association with Stealing Freedom began while researching into the history of my G, G, G, grandfather, Ellwood Harvey. We have a two page photo essay (Philadelphia Inquirer 1938) which recreated the history of Ellwood helping a slave named Ann Maria Weeks (sic). It was Ellwood who took her from in front of the White House and to William Still's house in Philly. Two days later he took her to ...

Scholastic Inc., 2007

A Teacher's Perspective
I am reading this book aloud to my fourth grade class. All fourth graders in our state study Virginia History, and we just finished covering Jamestown. This book is bringing the story alive to them more than anything else has before... including a trip to the settlement site itself! They are begging for me to read everyday. This book is historically factual and absolutely riveting. It is a must ...
