Hope in the Darkness
Bravery, courage, and selflessness, characteristic of the Danish resistance during WWII, are bright glimpses of hope during a dark period of world history. The history of the Danish resistance is recorded chronologically, with individual rescue stories woven throughout. This beautifully rendered acount, including photographs, is printed on thick, rich paper, underscoring the beauty of what ...

Great history lesson for everyone
I happened to come across this book at the local library. As a Japanese-American whose grandparents and father had lived through the internment, I didn't hesitate to check it out even though it looked like a middle school required reading type of book (I am in my late twenties). This book is excellent! I would not use this text for a research paper; that being said, the author gives a very ...

Spare story of one man's struggle against slavery
This story documents the slavery and eventual freedom of one man. Henry and his brothers and sisters work for a good master. However, on his deathbed, the master gives Henry to his son, separating Henry from the rest of his family forever. Henry works well in the master's son's tobacco factory, presumably avoiding the beatings of the foreman. Later, he meets Nancy, a slave of another master. ...

An excellent source of UGRR info for children and adults!
As the director of an Underground Railroad museum, I am always looking for clear, concise materials for the public to use. This book is being added to our new education program, for use in elementary schools in our area. The facts are presented in an easy-to-read fashion, and anyone, adult or child, is able to pick up valuable information without being threatened by the reading level of the ...

Wonderful book!
I have not run into many children who have felt this way in my short career as an ESOL teacher but students similar to Mei Mei are out there. This book is very helpful to teachers with ESOL students in their classroom who are not trained in TESOL practices. Students often go through a silent period where they are listening to the language and just taking English in before they begin speaking ...

A Book that Really Tells it Like it is.
I thought this book was excellent and so helpful - as anything can be at a time like this...it is comforting to know that others share in this horrible journey of grief and you are not alone in your feelings. The writer/writers have all been there and will be for the rest of their lives. I cried my eyes out but found the book cathartic. I have read a few others but none have touched me as ...

heartfelt accounts... children's 'history' of Civil Rights
Touching and powerfully honest personal accounts of the daily lives of children / youth in the Civil Rights Movement. Children surviving domestic terrorism in a culture of violence, ever hopeful of realizing " all men are created equal". Though it documents 'traumatic' incidents the focus is on courage , hope, and our personal responsibility for making the world a better world. For the ...

Excellent Introduction to Civil Rights for Elementary ages!
Whenever teachers in our predominantly white elementary school ask me to recommend a title pertaining to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., or to African American history, this is one of the first books I suggest for grades 4, 5 and 6.The question and answer format lends itself to reading aloud and then discussing topics that come up, like segregation, white supremacy, the Montgomery bus boycott, etc. ...

Fantastic starting dessert book
I bought this book for the extremely helpful pictures! Not only do they show the final product, but they also show many of the individual steps. It's a great book for beginning chefs, and I think that on the whole, the recipes are OK and the presentation could use a little work, but I'm overall very pleased. The pages are thick and the paper is of high quality.

Did Ellen Levine attend PS 177 in Brooklyn from 1946 to 1954
Was Ellen Levine in my elementary school class? If so, we are both authors of many books. We're both 57 or so. If so, you were my friendly classmate at PS 177 or D.A. Boody JHS. Is that you, Ellen? If so, a warm hello from a grandma of five who also writes a lot of books, a history buff, and was also born around 1941. If this is another Ellen, then just ignore this message. Keep on writing ...

We are homeschoolers, and are studying U.S. History. We used this book to compliment our studies of the Reconstruction and Reform Period. My children enjoyed the layout, as well as the information. They liked it so well, they usually read ahead of the scheduled assignments!

Great Introduction to Rachel Carson
I ended up checking this book out from the library because it seemed to be the only decent biography on Rachel Carson. I didn't realize until I got home that it was written for middle schoolers. I read it anyway because I hadn't read any biographies on her. This a great introduction to Rachel Carson, especially for children and young adults who have more than a passing interest in marine ...

Victims Who Are Seldom Heard
I read this book and I thought it was quite interesting... I'm a History major in college and one of my fields of expertise is World War II. I really appreciated this book because it covered some things I've always been curious about, such as Germanization and victims who were not Jewish, but victimized because they were "physically unfit" or "racially impure." You hear very little about the ...

Brings back an almost forgotten era
When my niece (from L.A.) first came to New York, she was seven years old. I took her to the rehabilitated Ellis Island, and she was (for a seven year old) fascinated to learn that her great grandparents along with millions of other immigrants had stepped across that pier and became Americans. For Christmas, I sent her this brilliant book. "If Your Name Was Changed at Ellis Island" by Ellen ...

Educational and interactive literature.
When I heard a librarian read this book to a group of fourth graders, I believed this librarian threw a great opportunity to use this book as an educational facility for these students and others to come. From time to time I am asked to explain certain aspects of my religion. Although I can recite some key information regarding holidays, etc., I find that this book offers me a quick brush up course on any given subject. If You Lived With The Iroquois
Ellen Levine and illustrator Shelly Hehenberger have created a delightful book that takes the young reader into a historical look at life as an Iroquois Indian. The eighty page book is divided into subtitles which concisely tell the story of daily living for the early Iroquois people. As the book is written in second person, the reader is drawn into the story and feels as if he or she is ...
