That's What Friends Are For

Sami and the Time of the Troubles3 reviews
Florence Parry Heide, Judith Heide Gilliland

Sandpiper, 1995

A book of hope........
My boyfriend lived in Lebanon during the time frame of this book. This book was close to the life he knew then. I bought the book for my sister's Arab American child. It is often difficult to find children's books with an Arabic theme. This is a wonderful one.

The Shrinking of Treehorn10 reviews
Florence Parry Heide

Holiday House, 1992

Clever, engaging text and Edward Gorey!
The big point here is about adult distractability. Treehorn is shrinking and his parents and teachers are mostly concerned with what this might mean to them, after they are forced to notice his condition. The subtlety of this may not register with little kids but they'll love the fun idea of a kid shrinking and having to cope and the drawings by Gorey are funny and wonderful. (If you are ...

Banana Twist2 reviews
Florence Parry Heide

hylarious
I read this book as a child and have been searching for it for years. It's very involving and hysterically funny. If you want to laugh or make a child you love laugh, buy this book.

Banana Blitz2 reviews
Florence Parry Heide

Yearling, 1984

Funniest children's book other than Roald Dahl
One of my teachers read this to our class in 5th grade and we thought it was the funniest thing ever. Re-reading it as a grad student, it's just as hilarious and is a great reminder of how clean humor can still work. Of course the plot is completely unrealistic, but it doesn't matter as this is a COMEDIC novel.

Some Things are Scary: (No Matter How Old You Are)9 reviews
Florence Parry Heide

Walker Books Ltd, 2003

A good way to talk about it!
All kinds of scariness - some make you silly with relief & some will linger through your life like that scar on your chin when you fell down that day. Seeing your parents angry, being scolded can be scary! People laughing at you & you don't know why - ah, I've known that one! A good book to raise the subject of scary things, probably not one to read just before bed, however! Perhaps after a ...

The Treehorn Trilogy: The Shrinking of Treehorn, Treehorn's Treasure, and Treehorn's Wish1 review
Florence Parry Heide

"Harry N. Abrams, Inc.", 2006

Wonderful Artwork and Literature
I loved these stories when I was younger! Both the stories and the artwork are bizarre yet intriguing -- I'm very glad to have all three of these books united in one hardback volume, along with the other Edward Gorey artwork I have come to admire. My favorite of the three stories was "Treehorn's Treasure". A boy named Treehorn places his allowance into a hole in a tree, and the leaves of the ...

House of Wisdom2 reviews
Florence Parry Heide, J. Heide Gilliland

DK CHILDREN, 1999

A Real Gem
This is by far one of the best, and most beautiful, children's books on the importance of libraries that has yet been published. The text and the illustrations convey what it must have been like in 9th century Baghdad to experience for the first time the importance and value of books. The House of Wisdom should install a love of books in its readers and may even inspire some of them to become ...

Tales for the Perfect Child4 reviews
Florence Parry Heide

HarperCollins Publishers, 1985

hilarious look at the world through the eyes of children
Our entire family has delighted in this humorous look at the world through the eyes of Florence's children. Her witty tales made us literally laugh out loud. Our twin daughters saw a little of themselves in each of her richly drawn characters.Forence's insights are obviously gleaned from the experiences of a parent and a keen observation of the tactics that children employ to move mountains ...

Fables You Shouldn't Pay Any Attention To1 review
Florence Parry Heide, Sylvia Worth Van Clief, ...

Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1978

Not for your typical child
This book is true to the title: you certainly wouldn't want your kid to pay attention to the seven fables found in this book! In them, greediness, laziness, discontent, selfishness, carelessness, and lying are rewarded, while gracious, kind, and thoughtful children end up getting spanked. It's the ultimate in evil turnabout, and one of the funniest books I've ever read. This book would make a ...
