Great fun for Austen addicts
How much fun is this? A whole book about women who love to read Jane Austen--a book filled with coy plot allusions, character references, settings and themes. What's more, it's a book that's filled with humor and hilarity. Fowler--dare I say this?--is almost as observant about the foibles of human nature as Austen herself. If I weren't getting enough of an Austen fix this year from the ...

Excellent introduction to UML and the software design process.
If you would like to get a better grasp on doing some high-level software design, UML Distilled turns out to be a much better book than I had anticipated. I expected a dry tutorial of the UML notation, but it is thankfully much more than this. UML Distilled (3rd Ed.) does indeed cover the UML 2.0 notation, but while you are learning one of the most flexible and widely accepted ways to represent ...

Must have in any developers collection
I was referred to this book from a colleague after a quick discussion on "Replace temp with Query" in our projects code base. I thought I knew it all as a software developer, but reading this book, I soon came to realize that as a software developer I was leaving a legacy of code that was not at the standard it should be. This book opened my eyes to some really simple concepts, for example, ...

A great beginner's guide
This book has changed my life. I was 29 (3 years ago) when I bought it hoping to reduce my sodium intake in an effort to lower my blood pressure. Exercise was not working and my doc wanted to put me on medication. After a year of hard work, I went from 140/95 to 120/75 and I owe most of it to the philosophy of this book. I don't necassarily agree with many other reviews that this is the "end ...

Must have reference for all developers
Even if you don't do "Enterprise Application" development, this book is a must have in your library. If you have been developing for more than a couple of years and you haven't seen 1/2 of the patterns in this book, then you are probably doing something wrong and this book could greatly help you. Even if you do know 1/2 or more of the patterns in this book it is a great reference to the ...

Definitive British Mystery
If Ken Bruen's east London crime novels featuring the brutal and boorish Inspector Brant are literature as rugby, then Christopher Fowler's mysteries of the aging Brant and May detective duo are symphonies. Both entertaining, but Bruen is jarring and violent where Fowler is refined, cultured, and subtle. Fowler writes the classic British mystery: dryly humorous, understated, unadorned, and ...

Clever on the surface, yes, but deep as a well....
This is a detective story of sorts, but don't read this book expecting the usual type of mystery story. Of course there are crimes to be solved, and an investigation to be carried out, with lots of plot twists and all the usual trappings of detective fiction. There is an ensemble of odd characters, eccentric heroes and twisted villains. There is also a very atmospheric evocation of life during ...

The How, Who, When, What, and Why of Trust
For those looking for a book simply on human cognitive development, "Stages of Faith" is not the place to go. For those looking for a book simply on Christian religious development, "Stages of Faith" is not the book to read. However, for those looking for solid research into the stages of working out "meaning" in life, then this is the classic text. For Christians who have a distaste for ...

Absolutely wonderful!
The first of this series, "Full Dark House," was very good and this was even better. My only two regrets are that (1) the characters are of an age where you wonder how long they can be around and (2) I wish there were more books already there for me to read. But I know the next book is due out soon, so I'll take heart. The relationship and dialogue between the two detectives is priceless, and ...

Another great Fowler novel
Ten-second Staircase is another of the Byant and May mysteries. It is possible to read these novels individually, but I would recommend starting at the beginning so that you can fully appreciate all the characters and understand the references that run throughout the series. If you haven't read a Christopher Fowler novel before I would recommend 'Darkest Day' or 'Full Dark House' as an ...

Excellent Book - Must Have for any Ruby Developer
First and foremost, this book isn't a beginners guide to ruby, it doesn't hold your hand from "Hello, world", and it expects you to already know the basics of programming. Also, this book isn't a tutorial, it's a reference book first and foremost, and while it *does* guide you through some of ruby's basics that's not the primary intent. While there are excellent tutorials for learning ruby on ...

As Good As Everyone Else Says It Is
This book is a bargain at the price. Best book on procedures I have seen. Has informed consent and post-procedure care forms for almost every procedure as well. The one drawback is the paper is very flimsy and likely will eventually tear because you will use this book a LOT. I would have paid more for heavier paper stock.
