A gem!
Though somewhat obscure, this book should be more widely known and read. Very enlightening and well ahead of it's time. Terrific, readable translation. You'll never look at the world again in the same way!

Great Instauration and the Novum Organum3 reviews
Francis Bacon

Kessinger Publishing, 1997

A magical tour
If you want to discover the magical fountain of scientific life, you have three main options: (1) read Galileo Galilei, (2) read René Descartes, or (3) read Francis Bacon. The last is of an unbelievable richness of thought and discourse. All the wonderful rhetoric of Early Modern Age is there, with hints of a whole New World. Expressive!1 review
Paul Gauguin, Markus Bruderlin, ...

Hatje Cantz Publishers, 2003

Another equisite title to accompany a Fondation Beyeler exhibition!
The color reproductions are excellent, detailed text is easily read without flipping back and forth between pages, the scholarship is fine, and the book makes an excellent addition to current thoughts on expressionism. Plus, Amazon.com's discounts on fine art books are truly important in helping one build a great art library!

Essays, Advancement of learning, New Atlantis and other pieces (Odyssey series in literature)1 review
Francis Bacon

Classic Books, 2003

Wonderful Treatises by a Contemporary of Shakespeare's
Sir Francis Bacon was a contemporary of William Shakespeare, and there are those that adhere to the theory that Sir Francis wrote the works attributed to Shakespeare. He was well-educated where Shakespeare wasn't. Whether or not that theory holds true, it is worth while to read these essays written by Sir Francis. This book holds all of the 58 essays that Sir Francis wrote. At the time when ...

Francis Bacon1 review
Dawn Ades, Dawn Forge, ...

Harry Abrams, 1985

excellent
I have several books on Bacon, and this is by far the best. This book is actually one of the best artist monographs I have seen in terms of images. There are 195 full color plates, along with 21 gate-folds of Bacon's triptychs--and these are LARGE plates too. Small essay in the beginning, but if you just want to look at Bacon paintings, buy this book.

Francis Bacon: The Papal Portraits of 19531 review
Hugh Davies, Francis Bacon, ...

Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego, 2001

An Important Examination of the Oeuvre of Francis Bacon
Just when you thought you had every treatise about the edgy painter of confrontational imagery from the brush of Francis Bacon, up pops this well designed and written book on just how this amazing artist approached an image, an idea, and carried that to completion. Written by Bacon scholar Hugh Marlais Davies and including an interview with the artist that to my knowledge finds its first ...

Looking Back at Francis Bacon2 reviews
David Sylvester, Francis Bacon

Thames & Hudson, 2000

Through the glass, brightly
Few artists of the 20th century have engendered as much controversy while having such an enormous impact on coming to grips with personal demons on canvas as Francis Bacon. Once again the erudite scholar David Sylvester has written about his friend in a way that makes all other collections of images and gossips about Bacon pale in comparison. This book is a true "retrospective", not only ...

Francis Bacon

Kessinger Publishing, 1994

Courageous journey in search of truth!
Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive thinking method and was a revolutionary thinker in his day. This definitive text outlines his break with the Aristotelians and his modern scientific view of nature. An excellent read.

Francis Bacon1 review
Michel Leiris, Francis Bacon

Poligrafa, 2008

A Bacon landmark
This is a reprint of a 1983 book many consider the best ever published on Bacon's art. Written by the late French writer and Bacon friend Michel Leiris (who himself owned many paintings by Bacon, which were bequeathed to the Centre Pompidou, e.g. his own portrait)it starts with a brilliant and poetical essay on the meaning and nature of the artist's work and continues with 240 color ...

MODERN ART DESPITE MODERNISM
A superior book and fun to read! In this publication Robert Stoor, Senior Curator of MOMA's Department of Painting and Sculpture, gives an extraordinary account of some carefully chosen examples of the museum's art collection. After viewing the exhibit, I purchased this book primarily because of its stunning assortment of color plates and illustrations. The value of Stoor's commentary, ...

The New organon, and related writings (The Library of liberal arts)1 review
Francis Bacon

Liberal Arts Press, 1960

The keystone that all critically thinking empiricist must possess!!!
Francis Bacon's "The New Organon" is one of those books that entirely too few people sit down and read. That is a shame becuase if the lessons that he wrote down in this book were to be followed there would be considerably less strife when it comes to figuring out what's science and what is pseudoscience. I cannot state this enough it is a must read for anyone looking to review information on ...
