When the Rivers Run Dry: Water--The Defining Crisis of the Twenty-first Century28 reviews
Fred Pearce

Beacon Press, 2007

Lots of Detail
He makes his point over and over and over again. I had to read this for a class, and the running joke we had was that he could have got his point across in 75 pages and saved alot of water from not having to print as many pages. Overall, this is a really good book, its nearly impossible to counter his argument due to the enormous amounts of facts he has from traveling the globe.

Confessions of an Eco-Sinner: Tracking Down the Sources of My Stuff1 review
Fred Pearce

Beacon Press, 2008

Well-written and thought -provoking
Pearce is one of my favorite writers. He really helps you understand issues of importance to all of us - food, water, global warming - and the writing is captivating. It takes skill to create such fascinating reading from topics which seem completely mundane, such as where your green beans come from ... I intend to give this book to many friends.

Dry: Life Without Water1 review

Harvard University Press, 2006

Unevenly distributed, unevenly described
For my shower this morning I probably used more water than many of the people described in "Dry, Life Without Water" use for a whole month. Water is so scarce for them that a bath might indeed be a once in a lifetime event. It's not, of course, that I am particularly wasteful with water or that the world has a particular scarcity of water but that it is so unevenly distributed. And I think the ...

Last Generation - How Nature Will Take Her Revenge for Climate Change1 review
Fred Pearce

Eden Project Books, 2007

Fantastic book; US edition known as "With Speed and Violence"
FYI, this book is published in the US under the title "With Speed and Violence," so don't buy this expensive UK edition, thinking it's another, separate book by Pearce. The book is the best out of about a dozen that I've read recently on global warming. His vignettes, from traveling around the world to gather the news on the latest developments in climate science, are captivating. The book is ...

Earth Then and Now: Amazing Images of Our Changing World3 reviews
Fred Pearce

Firefly Books, 2008

Disturbing yet totally captivating
I work at a library, and as I was covering this book, I just had to look inside. I'm a fan of satellite images of the Earth to begin with, so naturally my interest in this book was piqued. I only opened to a random page to take a peek, but I ended up completly hypnotized by the images and the concise captions. I literally could not put this book down. This book has an amazing magnetism to it; it ...

Earth Then and Now: Potent Visual Evidence of Our Changing World
Fred Pearce

Mitchell Beazley, 2007

"Earth Then and Now" records the dramatic way in which our planet has changed in just the past one hundred years. It draws on the combined photographic archives of print, picture, and space agencies to create a powerful collection of images. Each pair of photographs has been selected to tell a compelling story - of a melting glacier, an expanding desert, an ever-rising cityscape or a natural disaster - presenting a stark visual comparison. On ...

With Speed and Violence: Why Scientists Fear Tipping Points in Climate Change31 reviews
Fred Pearce

Beacon Press, 2008

Welcome to the anthropocene--prepare to be surprised
According to Dutch scientist Paul Crutzen, sometime in last two centuries the Earth left the relatively benign holocene and plunged into the uncharted waters of the anthropocene. "A single species is in charge of the planet," writes science journalist Fred Pearce, "altering its features almost at will." While dyed-in-the-wool climate change skeptics such as columnist George Will continue to ...

Keepers of the Spring: Reclaiming Our Water In An Age Of Globalization1 review
Fred Pearce

Island Press, 2004

A Snapshot of today's water
Fred Pearce serves his readers well. He provides us with an overview of the present water crisis, while also giving us historical glimpses of ancient water management practices that may help solve our present predicament. I have been researching and writing about water for over 30 years. The ancient water practices that Pearce refers to in Africa, Israel, and other locations are places that I ...

This stimulating new series uses an innovative mix of graphics, ...

When the Rivers Run Dry: Journeys Into the Heart of the World's Water Crisis
Fred Pearce

Key Porter Books, 2006

Nothing seems more abundant than water. In fact, the world is confronting a global water shortage that could make the oil crisis trivial by comparison. To put the problem in perspective, it takes a staggering 11,000 litres of water to feed the cow it takes to make one McDonald's quarter pounder. As Fred Pearce warns, "The planet is running out of water." Many of the world's most powerful rivers have been so devastated by consumption and ...

Fragile Earth: Views of a Changing World (Collins)5 reviews
Collins with contributors, Mark Lynas, ...

Collins, 2006

Pictures are worth a thousand words.
This is a book for those interested in the environment, business, photography or science. I teach business courses to adults. This book demonstrates the awesome power of paired photos to convey important messages about dramatic changes over a very short period of time. This book is worth your investment of time and money. I am grateful to the publisher for this great work. bshaver@bus.wisc.edu
