Comprehensive, well-organised, and very readable.
My 9-year-old daughter wants to raise chickens, and we bought this book to find out how to proceed. It has answered every question we had, and many we didn't know to ask! The book is so clear and easy to read, that my daughter read it cover to cover. But don't get the impression it is written for kids; it is intended for an adult reader, and has all the detail you could want. This is an ...

Good basic information
I enjoyed this book very much even though I am not a kid. I am a new goat owner and this book makes all the information very plain. It was a very good first read. It is not very in depth and I am reading other books to add to my knowledge, but it is a very good starting place.

Great reference tool
My very first chickens are 2 months old now, and I've referred back to this book countless times, for help with making brooder boxes, when to remove the heat lamp, buying feeders/waterers, making our coop, treating diarrhea, when to switch feeds, how to tell a cockerel from a pullet (!), to find out if panting in 90-degree weather is normal (it is), etc., etc. It may be written for kids, but it ...

Good Basics
We looked at the Fence Bible and a Guide to Stock Fencing. This book was better than both of them. It offers good basic fence building skills, expecially for building fences for livestock. Not a book for "pretty" urban fences.

I loved this book!
I read it cover to cover. We will be starting our little farm in 2009, so I have been collecting pertinent reference material. It REALLY spurred my enthusiasm for raising our own food. Now on to "Basic Butchering of Livestock & Game"...

Awesome read for novice chicken keepers
I am totally new to backyard chicken keeping and I am loving this book! It has very detailed information (sometimes an overwhelming amount). The information is easy to read and apply and has helped me a lot in my chicken keeping. I highly recommend it!!!! NOTE: Don't buy it with the "Building Chicken Coops" package. That is just a small booklet that is verbatim a chapter in this book.
