FANTASTIC: instructive and funny
I love the history and, in the last year, I find instructive books. This is fantastic, I learn a lot, in each page, but I was really funny too. It permits you, live in that time, and understand that people and yours custom, dress, foods, etc.etc. You can aren't agree with them, but you cann't only dazzle..... then.... I read El Viajero, from Gary jennings, (Fantastic too, similar idea) ...

Excelente y placentero

A must-read if you like America in the mid 1800's
Unfortunately, this is the only Jennings book I've had the chance to read. However, I'm currently half-way through for the second time - and I NEVER read a book twice. His writing style and attention to detail, though sometimes grotesque, it captivating. Jennings has a way of drawing the reader into the story. He paints a vivid picture of the filth that existed in that time period, something ...

An absolute classic
A book that every person who has any connection to Mexico should read. A captivating historical novel about the conquest of New Spain, written from a native's point of view. Gives a person pride about his or her Mexican heritage. Lots of adventure, sex, violence, fantastic descriptions, engaging characters. My Mexican husband read it in Spanish and I (Irish-American) read it in English 18 years ...

Obscure Gary Jennings
Having become a die hard Gary Jennings fan, I have found that the same author of Aztec and many other historical novels wrote several children and young adult books in the 70's. This book is an enchanting tale although short that is about a mystery that takes place in Mexico. It involves a mysterious rope far in the jungle and several characters that try to figure out a mystery that surrounds ...

A must for the armchair traveler.
The Journeyer is an incredible book. It ranks up there with The Good Earth, Shogun, and Tai Pan. If you're into old China, epoch adventure, sex, romance, and suspense, and an if you like the notion of following several story threads each embodying a clever cast of characters this is the book for you. I lost count of how many times I've read the book and how many times I have recounted the ...

A book which opens up a fuller understanding of language.
In this gem of a book Gary Jennings brings us to an understanding and enjoyment of the language at our finger tips. He is perhaps one of the more intelligent of American authors and in this volume he unleashes the full power of his intellect and leads us down the path of the development of our own language and several others in the process. He is at moments revelatory of his own history, ...

A vocabulary junkie's dream
I have always considered myself to be a relatively educated person. But I have to say the level of the English language this author uses even kicks my well educated behind. The story he tells is enthralling with all its twists and turns. The glimpse into the past he gives us is fascinating. I felt as though I received a university level education in the English language after I've read it. ...

Good, But Not the Last Word
This is a first-rate history of the artillerymen of the Army of Northern Virginia. The background of every field-grade officer and many company-grade officers is covered, as well as the organization of the ANV's artillery arm at various stages in the war, and some material on its tactical performance. I'm glad I bought it. But there is still room for a history of artillery tactics in the ANV, and ...

Don't believe the small minded-this is a GREAT BOOK!
This is one of the greatest books that I have ever read. Not the most intellectual, not the deepest, but the MOST FUN EVER. It is a fabulous "journey". Isn't that what a great book should do? Take you to other worlds? Well, this book really does. Yes, there is sex that we wouldn't condone (but you better bet went on then and certainly goes on still) and there is the most horrifying description of ...

Another bawdy romp with Gary Jennings!
I was delighted to find that 'Spangle' has been serialized and published in paperback. I read the entire, hardbound book several months ago, being an ardent Gary Jennings fan, and enjoyed every page. "Center Ring" takes the reader from Italy to Russia, with stops in Austria, Germany and Hungary, providing never-before revealed vignettes of late 19th century circus life. It's written in ...

Gary Jennings - Astrology
Gary Jennings was an extraordinary researcher. He brings out the fact that ancient astrology was indeed astronomy. Somewhere along the line of time this science was seperated into what is today know as astrology, and reading one's life in the stars. The original ancient study of the sky is an interesting art, which is long lost. However, our modern day astronomers do a magnificient job. And Gary ...

International Circus
Gary Jennings has carved out a niche for himself in modern fiction - long, intricately plotted novels based around a single character in a little known historical area. Great reads, full of love and violence, colourful and exciting. And educational - history comes alive in his books, virtually bursting out of the page to take you by the throat. Or the heart. In Spangle he has outdone himself. ...

lost civilization come alive
I read this excellent novel years ago and still remember its impact on me. I was entranced by Jennings' descriptions of peoples and empires long gone. His device of using a traveling merchant--pocheca--as his primary character was excellent. It gave Jennings the opportunity to take the reader to places and peoples distant from the capital in Tenochtitlan. His description of war, religion and ...

Astonishing
This book took my breath away. I actually felt anguish when I realized there were only 10 pages left until the end. I didn't want it to end. I have never read a book more than once. I started it again a couple of days back and this time I'm taking my time and I will savor every page.

If you can find a copy, grab it!
Gary Jennings fans will not be disappointed by this western novel. The canvas is not as broad as his big two-pounders (Aztec, Raptor, Journeyer, Aztec Autumn, and the inferior Spangle), but it's an easy-going ride all the way. There's less overt sex and violence here, but that fits the milieu he's created here, frequently comic and elegiac. I'm glad to see some used copies available-- it's ...
