Penelope at School3 reviews
Anne Gutman

Cartwheel, 2004

such a great book. LOVE IT!~
initially I picked up this book at the store because it said "Penelope"... that is what we named our 2.5 yo DD... as we read it, EVERY NIGHT, I just love it more and more. It quickly became a favorite and now we need to collect all four. We have the winter one... just got that one the other day. I recommend. This holiday season we are purchasing a few as gifts. The pull tabs are so sturdy and ...

The Cat Who Walked Across France12 reviews
Kate Banks

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2004

I love this book!
As a first grade teacher, I love the rich language and colorful pictures in this book. My students loved it, as it takes readers on a spectacular tour of France. It is appropriate for older students as well, as we have used it at our school to teach the Six Traits of Writing. Our librarian loved it also, and she has ordered it for our school library.

Fox1 review
Kate Banks

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2007

Beautiful little book
My son picked out this book at the library, and I was pleasantly surprised. If you've ever let a three year old choose his own books, you know it's a little like playing the lottery; very seldom do you get any return on the investment. But Fox is beautifully illustrated and gently worded. The language is complex and rhythmic enough to satisfy us both, and the message is a nice one: parents ...

Mommy Loves6 reviews
Anne Gutman, Georg Hallensleben

Chronicle Books, 2005

sweet book
My son (now 16 months) has loved this book since he was born. It is really sweet, and at the end I say "... but most of all, mommy loves (his name)" and give him a kiss. He gets excited at the last page and looks up every time to receive his kiss.

Lisa's Airplane Trip9 reviews
Anne Gutman, Georg Hallensleben

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2001

The best in the series
My 2 year old daughter loves this book, and so do my husband and I! The illustrations are colorful and entertaining, and the text is engaging and easy to understand. My daughter loves to read along with this book. I also recommend "Lisa In New York", but I didn't care for some of the others in the series. This book is great and I highly recommend it.

And If the Moon Could Talk22 reviews
Kate Banks

Farrar, Straus and Giroux (BYR), 2005

My Favorite Children's Book!
This is a fantastic child's book! It is gorgeously illustrated with mysterious, lush, beautiful night scenes; the text is rhythmic, soothing, subtle poetry of the highest quality. I've been reading this book to my niece for three years and she loves it still! When she was four I'd read it to her and she would get to "read" the refrain "And if the moon could talk" each time it appeared. When she ...

Penelope Says Good Night (Penelope (Scholastic))
Anne Gutman

Cartwheel Books, 2006

Children can pull the tabs on every spread and help Penelope get ready for bed. On one spread, Penelope is making a chocolate pancake. Kids can pull the tab and help her flip the pancake. Uh-oh, now it's on her head! On another spread, kids can pull the tab and help Penelope wash herself in the bathtub. All clean, Penelope! And Penelope's popularity is worldwide: Translation rights to the series have been sold in 11 languages to major and ...

Penelope At The Farm2 reviews
Anne Gutman

Cartwheel Books, 2005

Great interactive book!
This book is fantastic. I had my doubts originally b/c we found the book on clearance at a store in our area, but it is fun and entertaining. My 18-month old loves to pull the tabs (& unfortunately pull off ducks). We count the animals we find on each page. The book definitely requires supervision, but can be repaired if little hands are superhuman fast! We also have the School one, but it ...

Profund book of depth and meaning, Glorious colour
One day at the sea a boy finds a rock. Just a rock, but he liked it and considered it a gift from the sea. He takes it home and we get to see through the descriptions of the author and the paintings from the artist(Georg Hallensleben)the fascinating history of the humble rock. After exploding out of a fiery volcano and witnessing the dinosaurs, being submerged in an ice cap, used as a cave, ...

Gaspard at the Seashore (The Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa)2 reviews
Anne Gutman, Georg Hallensleben

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2002

Another Lovely Story
This is another simple and lovely story about Gaspard the dog(?). This time, he goes to a summer camp at the seashore to learn to windsurf. As usual, the illustrations are beautiful and colorful. There is a subtle moral and a happy ending. These books always make me want to go to France!

Lisa in New York (The Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa)3 reviews
Anne Gutman, Georg Hallensleben

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2002

FUN FOR NYC VISITORS
Charming, sweet, funny, and NYC is the backdrop! I'm surprised I'm the first to review this picturebook. I've often given it and/or My New York to young kids who visit me in the Manhattan. When we have older visitors (age 8 to 13), I give them a novel that I wrote, Melanie in Manhattan, which is the diary of a funny New York City eleven-year-old who becomes a tour guide in her own town. Come to ...

Gaspard and Lisa's Rainy Day (Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa)1 review
Anne Gutman

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2003

Doesn't have a good message.
I purchased this book for my daughter for Christmas. When we sat down to read the book together, we were disappointed. At the end of the book the two friends cut up a poster of their grandmother's, and try to piece it back together. In the end they lose a piece of the poster and try to fix it with a marker. Both of them are afraid they will get into trouble for this. (Which they should!) ...

Penelope In The Winter (Penelope (Scholastic))1 review
Anne Gutman

CARTWHEEL BOOKS, 2005

Great picture book for Winter
I am a school librarian in an inner city school and I used this with a kindergarten class. After we read the story we each wrote _(The Child's Name)_ in Winter and drew ourselves in Winter. The kids thought the story was very funny, and loved that things moved, etc. The only thing I did not like is that at the end Penelope "gets ready for bed" and takes off her jacket and clothes (she is wearing ...

Gaspard on Vacation (Gutman, Anne. Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa.)4 reviews
Anne Gutman, Georg Hallensleben

Knopf Books for Young Readers, 2001

Paddle through Venice with cute dog Gaspard
I'm a big fan of children's picture books. Yes, I'm nearly 40! But the best picture books transcend age and can be as much a delight for adults as for kids. "Gaspard on Vacation" and "Lisa's Airplane Trip," the first two in the Misadventures of Gaspard and Lisa series, are among the best of the year so far-- colorful and delightful stories of two travelling dogs, with whimsical and hilarious ...
