this bridge we call home: radical visions for transformation5 reviews

Routledge, 2002

One of Dr. Keatings students weighs in
This book was one of the required readings for our "Women of Color" course, and I found it well-written, highly engrossing and very inspiring. Keating and Anzaldua have reunited to provide the long-anticipated sequel to "This Bridge Called My Back: Writings By Radical Women of Color"--with an expanded list of contributors including white women and men of all ethnicities. The decision to include ...

Borderlands - La Frontera14 reviews
Gloria Anzaldua

Aunt Lute Books, 1987

Classic
Not much can be said to some of the postings I see here--to those that suggest the third tier prose, those that call this work "racist," those that implore statements like "I hated it." These are the same people that vote for their own oppression, these are the very people that fancy their success on some sense of entitlement. Relax, you do not have to agree, but hear me out. Classic. ...

Interviews/Entrevistas2 reviews
Gloria Anzaldua

Routledge, 2000

Another great book from AK Press
In this memoir-like collection, Anzaldua explores the intersections between her life, her writings, and post-colonial theory. The interviews contain clear explanations of Anzaldua's concept of the 'Borderlands' and 'mestizaje'; her use of the term 'New Tribalism'; and what she calls 'conocimientos' - alternate ways of knowing that synthesize reflections with action to challenge the status quo.

Prietita and the Ghost Woman/Prietita y la llorona4 reviews
Gloria Anzaldua

Children's Book Press, 2001

A Fantastic Re-Telling of La Llorona
"Prietita and the Ghost Woman" is a re-imagined and re-telling of the original story of La Llorona, the Weeping Ghost Woman, widely known in Mexican/Chicana/o folklore. The original Mexican tale involves a young woman weeping over the children she drowned after committing an act of vengeance over her unfaithful husband. The story is usually meant to frighten, especially children. However, ...

This Bridge Called My Back: Writings by Radical Women of Color3 reviews
Cherrie Moraga, Gloria Anzaldúa

Persephone Pr, 1981

Very important collection
Oh my goodness!! This is an incredible ground-breaking book of awareness and consciousness. It was a must-read for anyone coming of age in the 1980's and it is still relevant today. I came on line to purchase it for a friend who had never seen it, and I am in shock that it is out of print, or even just out of stock (it's unclear which). The paperback is selling on ZBooks for $45. I'm confounded.

Chicana Ways: Conversations With Ten Chicana Writers

During the past two decades, literary issues like multiculturalism, gender, borders and border crossing, and the development of personal, cultural, and alternative identities have become increasingly important. The same years have seen the flourishing of writers from a number of ethnic minorities, including the Mexican-American women who are the subjects of these probing and insightful interviews by Karin Rosa Ikas. Cassell's Encyclopedia of Queer Myth, Symbol, and Spirit: Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender Lore ...5 reviews
Randy P. Conner, David Sparks, ...

Cassell, 1997

Superb--a very eye-opening read
This book is an exhaustive resource for information about almost everything pertaining to lgbt spirituality, from mythology to people involved in the gay/lesbian spiritual movements. This was a very affirming read, considering the "invisibility" of gay spirituality in modern religions. I'd especially recommend it for queer Pagans, because of the volume of pagan mythological figures ...
