National Identities and Violence
This critical anthology collects various approaches that register the changes in contemporary theory pertinent to the thinking of the nation. There are no less than nine different critical responses exploring the equivocal significance of narratives of identity, origin and progress in the cultural formation of the nation. As Prem Poddar puts it in the Introduction, "such a redescription of the ...

A classic story of one man's experiences during the short, but brutal war in Cuba. Private Post details his everyday struggles to keep his health, his sanity and his life intact. Clearly and comprehensively illustrated
This book is intended for an expert collector or historian who wants details about the Simson Luger, a gun manufactured predominantly between World War I and World War II in Germany. The authors are themselves collectors and they have amassed a catalog of information on this weapon; the strengths of the books are the extensive digital photos, including close-up images of gun markings, e.g., ...

Worthy companion to Bernac
Pierre Bernac's _Interpretation of French Song_ has long been the indispensable reference volume for singers and coaches of this rich musical literature. The focus of the present volume is somewhat different, more comprehensive in its listings of composers (any composer of significance who set French texts is included, resulting in some surprising listings, Bernstein and Dinu Lipatti, for ...

The Best Yet on Tarakovsky
This isn't a new volume, though it represents the best yet on the incomparable, Tarakovsky. It's a very thourough assessment of his slim film output of unprecedented visual poetry. Tarakovsky's proseletyzing tends to burden his visual statements in the late work. And, I think, the authors are onto the fact that Tarakovsky's emphasis on literary sources within the films, particularly Dostoyevsky, ...

A remarkable anthology of twenty-four poets
The Franconia, New Hampshire, farm of the American poet Robert Frost was turned into a museum and center for poetry and the arts in 1976. From that time, "The Frost Place" has been annual event wherein an emerging poet has been invited to spend the summer living in the house where Frost once lived and wrote some of his greatest poetry. The Breath Of Parted Lips: Voices From The Robert Frost ...

Just Buy It ( A Real-Life Gangster Classic).
This book is gripping from start to finish. It's not your typical Cockney gangster book with a picture of a meat head on the cover and it's not exagerated like the Kray Myths seem to be.It's a story of a well known Liverpool family who are into everything and it progresses into an unbelievable climax. The supergrass turns against the new breed of Liverpool gangsters because he lost his son to ...

A Great Book for Sharing
I used selections from this collection as read-alouds for my 8th grade language arts class (I end class most days with a read-aloud, while students keep a response journal). Because of the subject matter, these stories definitely engage the students and keep their attention. Do they all "get" the message? No, but I guarantee that when you look around the room and see the eyes of those two or ...

Mostly a very solid book
Great book. BTW, the author lists a LOT of errata on his website, enough to take over an hour to mark up my copy (5th printing). Although it's nice he documents this so well, it's a pain in the rear, so you may want to verify the edition you're buying to avoid this extra effort. On page vi, above ISBN, look for reverse sequence; example: "10 9 8 7" indicates 7th printing (cryptic, I know). ...

Heh heh heh. Hey Butthead! Check it out!
There's not much more to say. Beevis and Butthead, the Cheech and Chong of the 90's. Although the comics can't do the TV show justice (no funny noises or anything) they still are pretty cool. If you're a B&B fan I suggest you pick these up.
