dante, longfellow and dore'
this is a beautiful book and contains all three volumes of the divine comedy. the longfellow translation is very clear and readable and i like the fact that he didn't try to reproduce the rhyme. the language is only slightly outdated in places, but i don't mind that since it is a very old poem and the slightly formal language gives it a classic feel. the original woodcut illustrations are ...

An Excellent book for the Doré or Dante lover
The quality of this book - along with an amazingly affordable price tag - quickly persuaded me to pick up a copy. Its really everything you could ask for in an art book; The pictures are all very big, but not overwhelming; Its easy to see minute detail, and the overall scope of the image. I actually blew up some of the prints in photoshop and printed them on huge poster paper for my room, ...

Breathtaking
With its fine binding, large type, and beautiful paper, this large addition of Milton's Paradise Lost will make a handsome addition to any shelf. Some will say that it is not well suited for the first time reader, lacking the line notes of other annotated additions. I would beg to differ, as such commentary, while deepening ones understanding, can also detract from the majesty of Milton's words. ...

A fun, easy way to learn more about the Bible
In 1865, Gustave Dore illustrated an edition of the Bible with drawings that are popular to this day. This collection of Dore's 241 Bible plates from Dover Publications sells for a very reasonable price. I think some of Dore's illustrations are wonderful. Among my favorites are a portrait of Amos, Jesus and the woman of Samaria, and the arrival of the Good Samaritan at the inn. One thing that ...

Medieval vision of the afterlife
This was required reading for a graduate course in medieval history. "The Divine Comedy" describes Dante's journey through Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio), and Paradise (Paradiso), guided first by the Roman epic poet Virgil and then by Beatrice, the subject of his love and another of his works, "La Vita Nuova." While the vision of Hell, the Inferno, is vivid for modern readers, the ...

A powerful translation of a masterpiece
There have been several excellent translations of Dante in the past few years, all worth reading in their own right. But I retain a special affection for John Ciardi's version, as it's the first one I ever read, at the unprepared & overwhelmed age of 15. I knew of its reputation as a major classic & I was ignorant enough to be unfazed by the prospect of reading it. Well, to say that I was soon ...

A necessary companion to the Literary Masterpiece
Dore, known perhaps best for his woodcuts of Dante's "Divine Comedy", was not only a fantastic illustrator, but a prolific one as well, producing scores of woodcuts for great literature, including "The Holy Bible" and "Orlando Furioso". Before there were movies, a person could look at these pictures for motion, excitement, and dramatic storytelling. This is a necessary companion to "Paradise ...

Not worth it at all!
This book is a total ripp off. The CD does not even include all the images in the book. NOt only that, the images are rediculously small. One would think that there will as big as the book or your monitor. Instead, they are about 4" by 6". Put your hard earned money somewhere else!

A LOVELY PRODUCTION
Unless you have a couple of thousand to plunk down on the first edition of the Idylls, published by Moxon, in the 1860s, in four folio volumes, then this edition is the next best thing. The illustrations are lovely and help to uplift Tennyson's verse. In fact, Dore becme so popular that this edition was often referred to at the time as "The Dore Tennyson," and rightfully so. Dore ismakes ...

Dore does it again!
Beautiful, lyrical, and sensuous images from the Crusades.I am enraprured by the scope, graphic power and compositional greatness of this largely forgotten artist. Though we may look at the politics of the Crusades differently than the Victorians, this book is sure to please any fan of 19th century art. One look at Dore and you see where Cecil B. Demille got much of his inspiration.

A Beautiful Book!
As well as the titular annotations--which are concise, well-written, and extremely helpful--this large book includes full-page reproductions of Doré's woodcuts and the older "uncut" version of the poem. The typography and layout imitate that of the period. You can read both versions of The Ancient Mariner online, of course; but this is not a book for first encounters. It is a book for a ...

A great inspiration for illustrators,...and dreamers.
This book contains a treasure of very atmospheric and detailed scenes. Doré's masterly use of superwide pespectives is an open invitation to explore his detailed and scetched people, landscapes, castles, heroes, battlefields and romantic situations. The illustration settings cover an area as huge as old europe with an ocassional touch of Asia. A particular delight are the morphed human-animal ...

It's all about imagination
Whenever you have the desire to just let your imagination go with some total escapist reading, you can't really go wrong with any of the Munchausen stories. The movie of the same title by Terry Gilliam is also wonderful. These are good stories to read to a fairly young (like between 5 and 10) year old child, but I find them entertaining as well. I'm not sure how the other reviewer could find them ...

An extraordinary visual companion to DON QUIXOTE
Gustave Doré was a frustrated painter. Forced by circumstance to produce illustration illustrations for a number of literary works, he primarily longed for fame and success as a painter. But while shooting for fame as a painter, he inadvertently achieved immortality as arguably the greatest illustrator in history. Most illustrators of the classics fall far short of the efforts of the works ...

A great buy !
This book is really great because it provides the reader with an extensive view of Dore's work. It displays more than a hundred high quality full-paged engravings for a very low price. I was utterly delighted when I found this book : I am French and though Gustave Dore is a French artist, it is at present impossible to find here such books as the Dore series published by Dover Publishers.
