Riding to Washington (Tales of Young Americans)2 reviews
Gwenyth Swain

Sleeping Bear Press, 2008

Come and 'walk the walk' with Janie . . .
Gwenyth Swain's new picture book "Riding to Washington" (isbn #1585363247) is for ages 4 - UP THROUGH ADULTS. It is a poignant and colorful nudge to my memory of that time - 45 years ago - when the author's father and my father and our local pastor went by bus from Indianapolis to be part of Martin Luther King's MARCH ON WASHINGTON. Swain's story is one often categorized nowadays as "a ...

I own the Arabic and Chinese bilingual versions of this book. Both include English text too. Wash Up (Small World)1 review
Gwenyth Swain

First Avenue Editions, 2002

Introduces children to the world
We have a diverse family made up of our biological children, plus children adopted from other countries. We love all of these books, as they show children around the world doing every day tasks (washing hair, getting dressed, eating, bathing, etc). My 7-year-old can read them to his younger siblings, too. I love how these books introduce our children to other cultures.

Chig and the Second Spread2 reviews
Gwenyth Swain

Delacorte Books for Young Readers, 2003

INDIANA HAS NEW HEROINE
CHIG, so-named because she was "no bigger than a chigger," is in truth Minerva Kalpin, a small girl with a TALL task in life. By way of Chig's everyday adventures, the author pulls the 'Depression Years' out of the shadows of history. Young readers will learn about the poverty of the lunch bucket that might hold one biscuit, spread only with ketchup -- instead of a real sandwich with TWO ...

Tidy Up (Small World)1 review
Gwenyth Swain

First Avenue Editions, 2002

HOW BIG IS YOUR CHILD'S WORLD ?
New in the SMALL WORLD series is "Tidy Up". Author Gwenyth Swain presents pictures of children world-wide helping with tasks. My sisters and I grew up with an elderly aunt who taught us to call this "flaxing." Enjoy reading aloud -- the youngest will remember rhyming phrases, and soon make up some of their own! Curiosity will be aroused among older children about subjects which might not normally ...

Gwenyth Swain

Milet Publishing, 2000

Great Bilingual and Multicultural Books!
What a series! I have the Arabic and Chinese versions of the this book. What a great way to develop literacy skills in English and a student's native language! Biliteracy helps develop literacy skills better and faster than just teaching English alone. These books are a great help and hope for ESOL Teachers and the students they serve.

Freedom Seeker: A Story About William Penn (Creative Minds Biography)1 review
Gwenyth Swain

Lerner Publishing Group, 2003

CAN WE HANG ON TO WILLIAM PENN's HARD-WON FREEDOMS ?
"Freedom Seeker" is an excellent introduction to the man whose seeking set him on a long journey of faith. In his youth he became a "convinced" member of the Quaker faith. These beliefs and practices made him extremely unpopular with the ruling majority in Britain, including his father. (Happily, they were reconciled before the elder's death.) William Penn suffered much for justice & civil ...

Bookworks: Making Books by Hand (Carolrhoda Photo Books)1 review
Gwenyth Swain

Carolrhoda Books, 1995

MAKING BOOKS FROM SCRATCH ? !
BOOKWORKS: Making Books by Hand is published by Carolrhoda Books of Minneapolis, and so filled with projects that adults working with children may want to be selective in suggesting something simple like a collage & accordion book as a first step. Whatever is chosen from the many varied examples is bound to be colorful and fun and give confidence which will lead to more complicated creations. ...

Eating (English-Vietnamese) (Small World series)1 review
Gwenyth Swain

Milet Publishing, 2000

Great Bilingual Books!
I have Eating in bilingual versions of Chinese and Arabic. Thank god someone is putting out books for bilingual children. Learning literacy in the native language and in English increases comprehension and makes it easier for children to read. Terrific! It's a very nice book for emergent readers whose native language is English too!

Declaring Freedom: A Look at the Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and the Constitution (How ...1 review
Gwenyth Swain

Lerner Publishing Group, 2003

LET YOUR CHILD READ THIS BOOK TO YOU !
It is my hope this children's book not be read to older children by an adult reader. Rather the book should be read by the child to the adult audience. Most of us are some distance from our earlier experiences in learning about the Constitution and the conditions of the times which spawned it. Hearing a child read the book will benefit the adult listener with a quick review of the importance of ...

Little Crow: Taoyateduta : Leader of the Dakota
Gwenyth Swain

Borealis Books, 2004

The Plains Indian Wars of the nineteenth century garnered enduring fame for certain Indian leaders, their names echoing powerfully even today: Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Red Cloud. Just as significant but less often mentioned is Taoyateduta, known to whites as Little Crow, the reluctant leader of Dakota warriors during the U.S.Chr(45)Dakota War of 1862, the opening salvo of the U.S.-Indian Wars. In this carefully researched biography of the ...

Sojourner Truth (On My Own Biography)2 reviews
Gwenyth Swain

Lerner Publishing Group, 2005

Terrific Little Story of Sojourner Truth
This children's book of Sojourner Truth contains information and details that I did not know about the former slave before. It is interesting how her life was shaped by slavery in New York State and her willingness to speak out when women and blacks were discouraged from speaking. Sojourner's religious experiences are detailed here as religion was a major part of her life. A very nice book.
