Uncle Tom's Cabin (Norton Critical Editions)5 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

W. W. Norton, 1993

This is definitely the one to buy!
This version of Stowe's classic text includes reproductions of orginal historical documents at the back, literary criticism of the text, and some of the original illustrations. The book is well-made, stands up to the stress of reading (paper is thin but not too thin, like some anthologies). As for the text-- this is the book that some say caused Abraham Lincoln to write the Emancipation ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin (Wordsworth Classics)145 reviews

A towering, very important American classic
For whatever reasons, I'm one of those who, over the years, never gave "Uncle Tom's Cabin" much thought. I'm afraid I dismissed the book based on the derogatory cliche of describing a complacent black man as an Uncle Tom. What a pleasure to find how wrong I was. Although the style of narration, the punctuation style of the day and the evolution of contractions, compound words and other bits of ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin Or, Life Among The Lowly23 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Thorndike Press, 2005

Literature And History
There are some books which one gets to know by reputation before one actually reads them. "Uncle Tom's Cabin (or, Life Among the Lowly)" by Harriet Beecher Stowe is one of them. Whether from studying American History and slavery, and hearing the pejorative term "Uncle Tom", one gets a strong sense for certain aspects of the book. For whatever reason, I had not read the book until recently, ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin (Thrift Edition)4 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Dover Publications, 2005

A Real Classic!
Most of the classics you read are long and boring and definitely not easy reading. Uncle Tom's Cabin is not one of those books! It is a book you can read before you go to sleep at night, without your brain hurting from trying to decipher what is going on (Wuthering Heights anyone?). Bottom line, I really enjoyed the book, and I know others will too.

Uncle Tom's Cabin: History Without the Textbook
Uncle Tom's Cabin, which is set between 1840 and 1850, is a novel that brought the cruelties of slavery into American homes. It unveils how slaves, like Uncle Tom and Eliza, were treated by slave owners, like Simon Legree. Throughout the novel there's a strong contrast between good and evil, which is personified by the different slave owners. First, Tom and Eliza serve a Christian family. Tom ...

The Annotated Uncle Tom's Cabin4 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

W. W. Norton, 2006

excellent background but read the novel first
John Updike reviews this new edition in the Nov 6 New Yorker, which is available online and well worth looking up. With 100 pages to go, Updike tired of the "irritable sniping from the sidelines" and switched to the standard Library of America edition. A few months ago I reviewed the Penguin edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin here in Amazon. I suggested that if you decide to read the novel, skip the ...

American Woman's Home: Or, Principles of Domestic Science4 reviews

Rutgers University Press, 1970

How to life comfortably post "HydroCarbon Man".
The Beecher sisters and Mark Twain were comfortable neighbors in 1869, living the good life on Hartford's elm lined streets. Mark wrote humorously about world travel or of his adopted home town, what was to become the "Insurance Capital of the World" while Harriet Beecher Stowe could claim authorship of Uncle Tom's Cabin. Catherine Beecher wrote a very practical "how to" book, the American ...

Dred: A Tale of the Great Dismal Swamp (2 Volume Set)2 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Native American Books Distributor, 2007

Right On, Harriet
A compelling and highly readable indictment of slavery in America, "Dred" takes risks that "Uncle Tom's Cabin" did not. The ending of "Dred" is powerful and strong, unlike that of "Uncle Tom", which seemed to advocate ultimately that the slaves should be freed and encourged to return to Africa. Harriet Beecher Stowe is just as sharp in her criticism of the North and she is to the South. ...

Brilliance Audio on CD Unabridged, 2005

Excellent, interseting and vocabulary enriching
Due to time constraints and long drive to and from work/other places, I opted to listen to the audio instead of reading the book. This turned out to be a great decision! The audio was clear with deeply enriching array of voices for different characters that served to deepen entertainment and enrich vocabulary and pronunciation. While the tracks are multiple [about 90 per CD]; they are short ...

Tell it All: A Woman's Life in Polygamy3 reviews
Fanny Stenhouse, Harriet Beecher Stowe

Kessinger Publishing, LLC, 2003

A woman tell it all
Once in a long while you will find a book so compelling you can not lay it down and this is such a book! I felt like I was pulled into the story and suffered with Fanny Stenhouse as she fought the good fight against the Mormon Church and her enemies who wanted to shut her up.. This was not an off shoot of the Mormon Church but the original Church and it is a chilling example of an organization ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin (Aladdin Classics)10 reviews
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Aladdin, 2002

As a history major...
This book was incredible. Yes it can be racist, and extremist at times, but at it's core you're reading a piece of history. For a book to sell 300,000 copies during it's original publication in the mid 19th century is astounding. You're reading a book that had a part in the Civil War, the bloodiest war of our history. I did find while reading it that many parallels can be made between this book ...

Harriet Beecher Stowe

Library of America, 1982

A great interpretation of a Christian man in shackles.
Uncle Tom's Cabin, written by a woman who appalled slavery, has touched the hearts of many readers. Wanting to change and affect public opinion on the concept of slavery, Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote a novel, a dramatic, engaging narrative that claimed the heart, soul, and politics of many fellow Americans. It was propaganda and an attempt to make whites in the North and South see slaves as ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin (Signet Classics)1 review
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Signet Classics, 2008

Powerful
At 59-years old, I've crossed paths with this book my entire life. This year, I finally decided to sit down and read it. Harriet Beecher Stowe's writing style is typical of her era and might be considered awkward over 150 years after she wrote this book. Still, the story is powerful and its message will continue to endure the test of time. Closer to the horrors of the holocaust, we are apt to ...

Uncle Tom's Cabin

LeClue, 2008

"Uncle Tom's Cabin; or, Life Among the Lowly" is an anti-slavery novel by American author Harriet Beecher Stowe. Published in 1852, the novel had a profound effect on attitudes toward African Americans and slavery in the United States, so much so in the latter case that the novel intensified the sectional conflict leading to the American Civil War.

Pearl of Orr's Island: A Story of the Coast of Maine
Harriet Beecher Stowe

Native American Books Distributor, 2007

The rural tranquillity of the lonely, pine-girthed shores of the Maine coast is the setting for this beautiful novel of conflicting aspirations written by one of the most prolific and influential writers in American history. Here is the heartwarming story of a young girl's struggle to belong and fit in, in the face of adversity, and of her upbringing among strong women, grumpy fishermen, annoying gossips, sea captains, and the dreamlike, ...
