Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2002

This is a must-read for every student who struggles in schoo
This enchanting book must be read to every class of learning disabled students, and should be in every elementary classroom as well. Ms. Lester shows, with amusement and the touching words of a small child, that writing can be fun-for anyone! Even if writing is a struggle, it can be enjoyed. This book will make students with problems know it's okay to be different, and that they can still ...

Hurty Feelings5 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2007

One of the best children's books of the year
This is the story of Fragility, a hippopotamus who, despite her large size, was very fragile emotionally. Even when someone complimented her she managed to reframe it into an insult and was hurt again. So what happens when she is responsible for protecting the goal in the soccer match and the bully of an elephant decides to insult her? You'll have to read the book to get the answer. "Hurty ...

Me First (Sandpiper Paperbacks)11 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1995

Great Moral
This is a great book for kids of all ages. I read it to my fourth graders the first day of every school year, and this year I bought copies for all of the other fourth grade teachers. Pinkerton always has to be first, until his greed teaches him a lesson that allows him to happily take the last seat on the bus.

Sewing Tools & Trinkets: Collector's Identification & Value Guide (Sewing Tools & Trinkets)2 reviews
Helen Lester Thompson

Collector Books, 2002

Excellent source for the collector
This is an excellent source for the collector of antique sewing implements. Full color illustrations of all priced objects make it easy to identify and place a value on pincushions, needlecases, thimbles and more. Not much text but price guides are generally short on text. If a price guide is what you want, I recommend this one.

Tacky the Penguin (Book and CD) (Read Along Book & CD)39 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2006

Funny and touching
Helen Lester's books all combine sweet stories with terrific humor that both children and adults can enjoy. The stories are just the right length and have a nice hidden message as well--you may be different but that can be a plus! The whole Tacky series is wonderful.

A Porcupine Named Fluffy (Weekly Reader Children's Book Club)20 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin, 1986

Very fun to read
I bought this for my three year old daughter...again based on reviews on amazon. Other reviewers were right: this book is a hoot. Everytime we get to: "H...H...H...H...H...Hippo" my daughter bursts out laughing. Highly recommended. Great illustrations set off the writing.

Listen, Buddy9 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1997

What a great book about listening.
This book was better than I anticipated. Buddy the rabbit goes along his merry way without listening correctly to anyone. Then he runs into the Scruffy Varmit who doesn't put up with little bunnies who won't listen. Buddy almost ends up as Scruffy's soup du jour, but Buddy learns the lesson finally and listens perfectly. My kids love this book with the wonderful illustrations in it. I love ...

Hooway for Wodney Wat Book & Cassette (Read Along Book & Cassette)46 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin, 2003

Hooway for Wodney Wat
Munsinger's expressive watercolors give the comical rats depth and personality. A great help for children with speech problems. How not being able to pronounce r's and being teased about it can turn into an asset. Wodney ends up saving his whole class from Camilla Capybera who is smarter, bigger and meaner than the other students. She takes him literally when he gives her and the group directions ...

Tacky in Trouble3 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2005

Tacky in Trouble
A very fun read with your child. Tacky the penguin goes ice surfing and lands in Africa, where he meets an elephant. Tacky and his new friend have a fun filled dinner time adventure while Tacky tries to prove that he is really a penguin and not a bouquet of flowers! My children and I both got a big laugh out of this book!

Tacky and the Winter Games6 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2007

Penguins in a Wacky Wonder Land: Hilarious Book!
"Tacky and the Winter Games" nails the difficult challenge of writing a truly funny kids' book; it's one of the funniest I've read in the last several years. Text and illustrations combine superbly to give a fully realized portrait of a Tacky and his wacky winter land. You and your young audience will enjoy both immensely; It's one of those rare books that adults will enjoy appreciate almost as ...

Tackylocks and the Three Bears2 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2004

A goofy and very silly book
It's time for the penguins to put on a play for Mrs. Beakly's School; Goodly, Lovely, Angel, Neatly and Perfect are all ready, but they're all worried about Tacky (he's the penguin in the Hawaiian shirt). With no practice or preparation, on the day of the play Tacky dons the Goldilocks outfit and flounces onto the stage. It's an absolute disaster...and the best play the rambunctious young ...

The Sheep in Wolf's Clothing2 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2007

Lynn Munsinger's hilarious illustrations accent a fun take on the traditional Wolf story.
Ewetopia isn't comfortable in her own wool, and is determined to impress others - but all her attempts fall flat, until the Woolyones' Costume Ball arrives with a promise of fame in Helen Lester's The Sheep in Wolf's Clothing. She tries on over fifty costumes before she finds the perfect one - which seems to fall flat until a stranger brings a new dilemma to the ball. Lynn Munsinger's hilarious ...

Even Mommy loves Tacky!
My daughter & I loved this book so much, we even know Tacky's cheer by heart: 1,2,3 left... A,B,C, right... flop down, roll over, Say, what's for supper! this is a beautiful way to show children that being different is okay.

Something Might Happen3 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2003

His imagination always sees disaster in any situation
Helen Lester's Something Might Happen receives Lynn Munsinger's delightfully zany color drawings as it tells of Twitchly Fidget, who is afraid to go anywhere or do anything. His imagination always sees disaster in any situation, so he stays indoors and waits for adventure to come to him - which it does, with an unusual twist.

The Wizard, the Fairy, and the Magic Chicken4 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 1988

Family Favorite
Our entire family loves this book. How can you resist a chicken in a tutu, a magic chicken at that, and a magic pickle? This is such a cute book and we love the fact that it's all about working together to solve a problem (even if it's one you've created yourself). My 3 love it and can identify with the characters. We also love the Revenge of the magic chicken, but alas it is now out of print ...

This book is full of smiles
I know a 5 year old boy who ask to read this story all the time. It's a funny story about a chain of events caused by a little boy ,that affect alot of animals but in the end they all forgive Murdley Gurdson and help him to feel better about making a mistake. The pictures are cute, the story interesting and just the right length to be fun. Sure to put a smile on the face of adults and childern ...

Princess Penelope's Parrot2 reviews
Helen Lester

Houghton Mifflin/Walter Lorraine Books, 2001

Helen Lester Strikes Again!
As a kindergarten teacher, I am always looking for books that teach as well as entertain. Helen Lester delivers just this in her story about a very spoiled princess named Penelope and her parrot that she receives as a birthday present. Penelope does not speak nicely to the bird, and is angered when the bird will not speak to her. Penelope later learns how important it is to use "nice ...
