The Gift of the Tree3 reviews
Alvin Tresselt

HarperCollins, 1992

A Poetically Told Tale of the Cycle of Nature
I couldn't believe this book hadn't been reviewed more than once, so I had to write in. We just got this from the library, and believe me, we'll be purchasing our own copy very soon, as well as checking out other books by this author. There are only one or two short paragraphs per page, so there's not too much text for my three-year-old, but it's written so poetically that we can talk about the ...

Jumbo's Lullaby3 reviews
Laura Krauss Melmed

HarperCollins, 1999

Excellent Childrens Book for Bedtime
This is an excellent bedtime book to read to a young child. We started reading it to our daughter when she was first born. Now at age 16 months, it is her favorite book. The pictures are vibrant and sweet. But my favorite part of the book is the cadance of the text....it just flows off the tongue and thus is a joy to read. We have basically memorized it from reading it so much. So now we can ...

Christmas in the Trenches6 reviews
John McCutcheon

Peachtree Publishers, 2006

Excellent Children's Story
This is a well-written, well-illustrated, compelling children's story about the fraternization of rival soldiers during the First World War. The story of English and German soldiers singing "Silent Night" together in the trenches really humanizes the combatants in war and should lead the reader to question the sacrifice of human life in conflict. (Even older children will find this interesting, ...

A Book About God3 reviews
Florence Mary Fitch

HarperCollins, 1999

This Book Deserves Many More Than 5 Stars
The power in this book lies not only in its beautiful, oversized illustrations which fill out the entirety of its pages (11.25 x 9.53), but also in its well chosen words which describe God in terms that are understandable by children. This book is worthy of highest honors for its illustrations and the author provides a text which paints pictures with words which are ample accompaniment. It is ...

Move over, Goodnight Moon!
This is my favorite book to gift to new parents. Whether they've been blessed with a baby boy or girl, this is the perfect book to start off a life-time of reading. My other favorites are "Cookies Bite-Size Life Lessons" and "Jamberry"...there's just something so special about picture books, isn't there?

Poetry for Young People: Robert Frost (Poetry For Young People)8 reviews

Sterling, 2008

CAN'T THINK OF A BETTER BOOK TO INTRODUCE A YOUNG ONE TO FROST
This book is quite well done and gives a good representation of Frost's work. It of course in an introduction and the poems chosen hit the nail on the head. The illustrations are great and well fit the poem being addressed. There is a very nice introducion in the form of a simple biography of Frost in the front of the book which is quite useful. The addited comments by the Editor are quite ...

The Printer2 reviews
Myron Uhlberg

Peachtree Publishers, 2003

Interesting history; touching story
In "The Printer," Myron Uhlberg pays tribute to his deaf father who worked as a newspaper printer during the Depression era. The story portrays Myron's pride in his father while showing the discrimination deaf people faced during that time (and, at least to some degree, still do today). The printer shows that deaf people are not second-class citizens, and in fact, the hearing co-workers end up ...

Wishes for You9 reviews
Tobi Tobias

HarperCollins, 2003

Wonderful!
My super handed me WISHES FOR YOU as I was going to the subway. While reading it on the subway, I did not start weeping until: "I hope you will love one special person more than anyone or anything in the whole world," and then I did not stop weeping until long after I finished the book and got off the train at Queensboro Plaza. The not-starting weeping until that late in the book was a ...

I Love You As Much, I Loved You Before You Were Born1 review
Laura Krauss Melmed, Henri Sorensen, ...

HarperFestival, 2003

A mother's love
I bought I love you as much, when I was pregnant with my now 2 1/2 year old son. I even read it during my quiet time (a.k.a. sleepness pregnancy nights) out loud to my unborn baby. It always got me teary and I couldn't wait to hold my little guy. Even today, this book soothes him and reminds me of those special times. The pictures are beautiful illustrations of all kinds of mothers and their ...

Mommy's Lap1 review
Ruth Horowitz

Lothrop Lee & Shepard, 1993

Removing It From Our Home!
This book came very highly recommended to me by a mom in a bookstore. I really _wanted_ to like it. Premise seemed great; older kid loves being in mommy's lap, gradually finds there isn't room for her there anymore due to pregnant belly, and discovers that when the baby is born, there is once again room on mommy's lap for her. Sadly, though the drawings are lovely, and the book sweet in its ...

Hurricane!1 review
Jonathan London

HarperCollins, 1998

Very exciting story!
My 5 year old son has a great interest in weather, especially rainstorms, and he absolutely loved this book! I would have given it 5 stars, but it was a bit implausible that the boys' parents would have let them go swimming in the ocean the morning before a hurricane was to arrive. However, that's what made the story so exciting to my son!

Sun Up2 reviews
Alvin R. Tresselt

Lothrop Lee & Shepard, 1991

Beautiful, rich illustrations, wonderfully prosaic story
This book is perfect for anyone who experienced the lazy splendor of a summer thunderstorm as a child. We got it from the library, and after one reading ordered it. Excellent for older preschoolers.

The Yellow Star: The Legend of King Christian X of Denmark15 reviews
Carmen Agra Deedy

Peachtree Publishers, 2000

Beautiful Book
The Yellow Star is a beautifully told and illustrated story. The story is only a legend. Author Carmen Deedy writes about which portions of the story are in fact true in a small section at the end of the book. The language of the book and the illustrations are beautiful. Even though the story is based on a legend and not actual events, it is a beautiful tale of standing by each other ...

The Cat Who Loved Mozart1 review
Patricia Austin

Holiday House, 2001

Beautiful illustrations, lovely story
As a piano teacher, I'm always interested in picture books that feature children playing the piano. This book by Patricia Austin features a girl named Jennifer who finds a stray cat and brings him home. She names the cat Amadeus. At first, Jennifer neglects practicing for her sonata contest coming up. When she sits down to play the piano, she discovers that her cat loves to hear her play! He ...
