Inpatient Group Psychotherapy2 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Basic Books, 1983

perfect
Every time I pick up a Yalom book I ask myself why I have waited so long to read another one. His books are a pleasure to read and speak to people on all levels of experience and expertise. The title of this book says it all and is the perfect book for someone who will be working in an inpatient setting. This is a must-read for all professionals working with this population and speaks to the ...

The Gift of Therapy1 review
Irvin D. Yalom

Piatkus Books, 2003

Same as "Open Letter to a New Generation..."
I believe that this is the same as Yalom's "The Gift of Therapy: Open Letter to a New Generation of Psychotherapists." Am I mistaken? The cover and sub-title are different, but the content is the same, yes? The "open letter" is a wonderful book. See my review and others under that title. At any rate... Consider ordering Yalom's DVD "The Gift of Therapy." It is a one hour interview ...

When Nietzsche Wept66 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom, 2005

Very good book in understanding obsession
Nietzsche and Beuer meet... and their contact will bring both of them closer to getting to know themselves better. They are both ruled by obsession, and at first they are unable to see it. As time goes by, one becomes the other's mirror, and the reader's as well, showing us the power of obsession over us, and how our wishful thinking can create worlds of illusions that will dissociate us away ...

Love's Executioner, and Other Tales of Psychotherapy67 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Basic Books Inc., 1989

Magnificent!
I am really unclear as to how this book might have received anything less than 5 stars... It was recommended to me by my psychotherapy supervisor, at my request to read something a little more digestible than our textbook on said subject. I began reading and was immediately immersed in a magical, mysterious field of psychoanalysis that had been previously hidden from me! As promised, I not only ...

The Yalom Reader: Selections From The Work Of A Master Therapist And Storyteller3 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Basic Books, 1998

An excellent overview of Yalom's prior work
As a psychologist working in a college counseling center, I found this book to be a useful review of Yalom's prior publications. The first part of the book draws from Yalom's definitive text on group therapy, THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF GROUP PSYCHOTHERAPY. In this section, he addresses some of the most salient therapeutic factors to group treatment as well provides vital guidelines for ...

The gift of therapy: An open letter to a new generation of therapists and their patients36 reviews
Irvin D Yalom

Perennial, 2003

Excellent Resource
This was one of the most helpful books I've read in my graduate experience. The lessons take the theory that we've learned and make it practical. Dr. Yalom's willingness to admit his mistakes and weaknesses makes his advice and insight much more relevant.

Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy34 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Basic Books, 1995

Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy
Yalom did a superb job in taking his readers through the process- the world of group psychotherapy. I especially appreciate reading about the cases to see how the theories actually came together. I have learned so much from a pro!

Momma and the Meaning of Life19 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Piatkus Books, 2000

Yalom speaks to and for all of us
This book is simply wonderful. The first chapter about Momma is worth the price of the book all by itself. Whether one is a therapist, is in therapy, is curious about therapy, or just wants to understand life, read this book, in fact, read all of Yalom's books, (well, maybe not "The Practice of Group Therapy") That one is a textbook for practicing group therapists.

El día que Nietzsche lloró3 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom, Rolando Costa Picazo

Emece, 1992

Treating Sexual Disorders2 reviews

Jossey-Bass, 1997

Educational, useful and well written
As a therapist who sees patients with sexual problems I found this book extremely helpful. The various chapters gave me the tools I needed to understand sexual difficulties from a psychological and physical perspective. I've even referred my patients to selected chapters of the book, and they have reported that they were able to understand the concepts without having a professional education. ...

Treating Dissociative Identity Disorder (Jossey Bass Social and Behavioral Science Series)3 reviews

Jossey-Bass Inc Pub, 1995

Compared to the other books on MPD, this is the best.
I've been treating MPD for over a decade, but this book has the best in the field giving us their decades of experience. It really helped me to get current, and improved my clinical practice. I copy Dr. Spira's introductory chapter to give to my patients. I have the hardback, which is no longer available, but the paperback is cheaper anyway.

Existential Psychotherapy16 reviews
Irvin D. Yalom

Basic Books, 1980

A psychotherapy practice could be built on this book!
I have recommended this book to one client who found it extremely useful as a means of managing his fear of death. Yalom's idea that the fears associated with the existential concerns of isolation, freedom, death, and sense of purpose form part of our subconscious-conscious dynamics is brilliant and original. He makes the argument that the anxieties associated with these concerns form a very ...

NIETZSCHES TRANEN.1 review
Irvin D. Yalom

Uitgeverij Balans, 2003

Take your reading as far as you like
This is one of the best books I've ever read. It exists in many languages (When Nietszche Wept, El día que Nietszche lloró), hence its popularity. The genius of Yalom lies in the potential of the book. It can be taken as an entertaining novel. Others may find information about Bauer, Freud, and Nietszche, their lives and thoughts (though in reality B and N never met, but F and N did). ...

Every Day Gets A Little Closer : A Twice-Told Therapy12 reviews
Irvin D Yalom, Ginny Elkin

Basic Books, 1974

Life...Or Something Like It
This is one of those books I couldn't wait to run back to. In those free moments between dishes and the bank, and the relaxed air of bedtime, I reveled in anticipation, because this book is like a talk with my best friend. Maybe better. Candor, humor and delightful poetic insights ramble through the hills and valleys of this therapeutic reality fest. I came away with a new sense of myself and ...

Staring at the Sun: Overcoming the Terror of Death82 reviews

Jossey-Bass, 2008

We all stare at the Sun
Maybe the best book about our reaction to the 'terror of death' since the classic 'On Death And Dying' by Elisabeth Kubler-Ross. A psychology lecturer told me Elisabeth, a world expert on the topic of facing the end of life, ended up alone in a hospice in Arizona. I think no such fate faces Irvin Yalom. He will be surrounded by friends, and will know his powerful spirit will live through his ...
