A Mapmaker's Dream16 reviews
James Cowan

Shambhala, 1996

A KEEPER
I truly enjoyed this book and put it on my "Read Again Shelf" (there aren't many there). Fra Mauro is a great character - I wanted to be a fly on the wall to actually see him at his work. I think several of the reviewers took this book too seriously. I spread out the reading of this over a couple of weeks rather than reading it straight through.

Desert Father: In the Desert with Saint Anthony1 review
James Cowan

Shambhala, 2004

Transforming
'Desert Father' by James Cowan is a both a book about transformation, and can itself cause a transformation. Cowan recounts in engaging prose the story of his journey in search of the spirit of Anthony, the patriarch of monks, and the first anchorite and hermit in the desert in Christian history. Anthony gave up the splendours of life in Egypt (which was, at his time, one of the most splendid ...

Architectural Acoustics Design Guide (Professional Architecture)2 reviews
Acentech, James P. Cowan

McGraw-Hill Professional, 2000

A basic acoustic introduction
This book is easy to read with many practical examples described in simple basic acoustical or structural terms. It is a very good place to start for those who are just beginning but for those with experience or previous training it offers little technical or detailed information nor acoustical equations. As a basic overview it is fine and the resource section is very useful.

Mysteries of the Dream-Time: The Spiritual Life of Australian Aborigines1 review
James Cowan

Prism Press, 1993

Making sense of Aboriginal culture and religion
As a white Australian I have known Aboriginal people, seen Aboriginal dances and gained a vague recognition that there was something quite spiritual about their culture, however primitive it seemed. Counterbalancing this, in my culture, are many negative stereotypes about the Aboriginal people. Mr Cowan tells a compelling and very different story and therefore I highly recommend this book to all ...
