Please Milo, don't mess around in Texas again
James Crumley is the best mystery writer at work today, and at times he even conjures the ghost of the great John D. MacDonald. But Crumley's best writing is wrapped up in his love of Montana, and "Final COuntry" is set in Texas. Not to mention all the other disagreeable associations Texas has for us New Yorkers... Milo never seems quite at home there, and it shows. But Crumley doesn't fail to ...

Another good Milo story
What can I say? I can't gobble these 'ol school/hardboiled PI novels fast enough. Another great Crumley read. Now, I just need to find a copy of "The Final Country",his third Milo mystery....and sadly I'll be done with both Milo and Sughrue series. It's been one heck of a ride!!!

The Mexican Tree Duck10 reviews
James Crumley

Mysterious Press, 2001

the mexican tree duck
The first Crumley book I read was "the last good kiss" I have been hooked on crumley ever since. He is a chandlerisc writter who deftly out chandlers chandler. His black crime writting picks up in the 1970's where chandler left off in the fifties. What "the last good kiss" lacked in plotting focus came together completely in "the tree duck". a person simply has to love a guy whose cast of ...

Milo's first case
When I had found out about James Crumleys writing style,I figured I'd start with his first Milo adventure...or, is that misadventure? All I know it was a depressing ride!!! But what a ride it was. I just can't get enough of this 'ol style/noir/hardboiled( whatever you want to call it). Mr Crumley has moved right toward the top of my favorite authors!!!

Vengance as a dish best served cold
This book turns on revenge. Milo Milodragovitch is after the man who stole his inheritance. C.W. Sughrue is after the guys who shot him and left him wounded outside a bar. The personalities of this unholy pair demand Old Testament styled punishment. So begins a crimson swathe surging from Seattle to Texas to Mexico as Milo looks for his money, and Sughrue for the men who hurt him. "Anybody who ...

Dia De Los Muertos3 reviews
Kent A. Harrington, James Crumley

Capra Press, 2004

Mysteries of the Border
Set in Tijuana, Dia de los Muertos is all about borders, between life and death, love and hate, doom and redemption, joy and despair. It's one day in the life of Vincent Calhoun, a rogue DEA agent who's run out of last chances. His colleagues are onto him, he owes more money than he could possibly repay, and he's dying of dengue fever -- but it seems to him that he might just be able to pull ...

One to Count Cadence8 reviews

Absorbing
I found this book while I was staying at a castle building thing in France. Here I was, middle of rural Provencial France, tons to see and do and watch and I spend my time sitting on my door step, drinking wine and smoking cigarettes and reading this book. I have never had anything to do with the armed forces (other than read other classic war books), but this one brings you in and forces you to ...

classic PI fiction
One of the novels featuring Montana PI C. W. Sughrue. Hired to find a wayward writer who is off on a multi-state drinking spree, Sughrue picks up an additional case to find a young woman who disappeared in San Francisco years before. He also acquires a bulldog with a taste for beer. Accompanied by the writer and the dog, he undertakes the case of the missing woman and that becomes a personal ...

I am proud to own this book!
In mystery there are lot of great writers. I horror, nowadays, you name it. In expetional cult and urban details, it has become a trend. Mr.William has it all in on in lifetime book, amd with twist in the tale that makes it an inordinary book. Stephen King, the master said, I never really read anything like it. Well, neither have I? Angel is a detectecitve with an awkward edge, asked by ...

Día de los Muertos6 reviews

Best ever
This is the best noir novel I have ever read, bar none, and that includes Cain and Goodis. It has been said that noir is "people you don't like doing things you don't care about," but not this one. You come to care intensely about Calhoun and his doomed one-day run against Bordertown Fate. But mainly, you find yourself very quickly in the hands of someone who can write, and nothing else ...
