An exciting moment for Cherryh fans
Prominent speculative fiction journal Locus Magazine, in choosing this book as recommended reading this year, noted this is probably only the first of the books on this subject: prolific science fiction author par excellence, C. J. Cherryh. If this is so, I look forward to the next, and hope they are as well done as Edward Carmien's gathered collection of essays. To me, diversity is one of ...

important
This is an excellent and important book of well-written positions from a variety of perspectives. A fan of pragmatism may be turned off by the 2nd through the 6th essays, but of the following 25 at least 23 or 24 are well worth reading. The section on law debates the question of whether philosophy influences or "supports" law. I came away, as I'd been before, convinced that moving to ...

The Best of British Sci-fi
The Road to Science Fiction: Vol. 5 is an incredible collection of some of the best works of British Authors in Science Fiction. Included are works by Clarke, but also by 30(or so) other authors. It was interesting to me that the collection was 30 stories, yet I had only read one of them. The highlight of this book for me is the short story, "The Hobbyist". It was a very exciting and chilling ...

Fantastic Fiction
Of the plethora of anthologies dealing with SF in a historical perspective, this has to be the cream of the crop. Not only does Gunn preform a deft editing feat by chosing rare gems alongside classics, but he introduces authors I've never had a chance to read before. All the volumes in this series are worth picking up, and it's just our luck the fine folks here at Amazon have them all.

Get them all!
If I ever got around to teaching a class on Science Fiction, these books would be at the core of the syllabus, along with Brian Aldiss' Trillion Year Spree. James Gunn, more noted for his academic treatment of SF than what he's actually written (of which "The Immortal", which was turned into a TV series, is probably the most famous), puts together an incredible collection of the best that SF has ...

The Old Voices
A good many of these writers are now dead, and the rest are quite old, which is a shame. Some voices leave us too soon. Silverberg's "Born With the Dead" is a disturbing commentary and travelog. If you've ever had to let go against your will, this will reach you. LeGuin's "Day Before the Revolution" talks about waiting and wondering, as life passes one by. Grant, Zelazny, Benford, even ...

Wonderful Early Williamson
A great novel with (at the time) revolutionairy ideas of travel via 'wormholes'. The character is typical of Sci-fi writing of the time, and there is a leading character that has to be an early personification of 'Giles Habbibula'. Well worth the read, and great book from THE Grand Master of Sci-fi.

Back to the future
These stories are the reason I fell in love with SF in the first place. If the following names mean anything to you, buy this book; Kuttner, Simak, Clarke, Asimov, "Doc" Smith. If they don't, buy the book anyway and give yourself a treat (then go buy books by those quoted above).

Excellent Advice
This book is worth owning because Gunn gives some excellent advice in certain sections. However, it depends on what type of "writing" book you need. The one book you can really jump into and read in one sitting is Orson Scott Card's "How to Write Science Fiction & Fantasy." I recommend Orson's book if you are thinking of writing SF&F, but you aren't sure if it's the right genre for you. Orson ...

a great book for law students (or anyone) studying partnership taxation
In their preface, Professors Gunn and Repetti preview the daunting task they faced in writing and revising this student reader: how to provide a simple introduction to the extremely complex area of partnership taxation. In this reviewer's opinion, Gunn and Repetti have well achieved their goal. My opinion is based on teaching taxation at the law school level for well over ten years. During ...

Not Free SF Reader
Excerpts. Bad Editor. Papa spank. When you have put together a retrospective and analytical anthology of good to outstanding stories, why spoil it with not meant to be chopped out bits of novels? Sure, maybe they are that authors best work. As a novel. Just say so, choose another bloody story and move on. Or choose other authors and one of their stories, not like there is a shortage. ...

Brilliant!
Four volumes in and no clunkers yet, this guy had something special . . . and his Hugo and Nebula winning short story is still about thirty years away. Wow. If you've been following along all this time let me just say that this volume will give you more pleasures than any writer had any right to give you, most writers have a couple truly amazing short stories within them and while not ...

Can I say wow?
My question above really explains it all. After reading this anthology, all I could think to myself was, wow. It was amazing overall. There were stories that annoyed me (by making me think about them in the middle of the day), and there were stories that were just fun as hell to read. All in all, KP did an excellent job of sorting and building a great book of great authors. Anything else to ...

Better than Contact???
I can't tell you if James Gunn's `The Listeners' is better than `Contact' simply because I haven't read Carl Sagan's book. But I have read Gunn's, and I can say that Sagan would have to have moved several planets in order to come close to the quality of `The Listeners.' Scientist Robert MacDonald is the director of "The Project," a study of sounds coming from the stars. MacDonald firmly ...

a great read
I dont often write reviews for websites, in fact this is the first time i am doing so, however i feel that this novel deserves my praise. A friend passed it along to me and i enjoyed it so much that i inhaled it in one night and then read it again, but more methodically over the next few days. I dont want to beat a dead horse and say that it was a brilliant tragicomedy unlike anything else i've ...

Absolute must have...
This book the the end all must have for anyone and everyone who liked the Scooby Doo movie. Not only does it give you something to do while you wait for the DVD, it appears to have been written from an earlier version of the movie, so many scenes that had been left out are included in this book(jinkies!). I was surprized by the number of downright hilarious jokes that had been left out of the ...
