One extraordinary read...
James Herriot writes of his veterinary experiences as no one else could. Full of humor, sometimes sadness but always spellbinding and interesting. I could not put this book down.

Wonderful book, short stories that are captivating
James Herriot's books are delightful - A young country vet who moved to the Yorkshire dales in the 1930s and describes his experiences with the land, people and animals. You instantly feel a strong, common bond with the writer, and are transformed to a simpler, better time. He offers a glimpse into a life that was uncomplicated, peaceful, and without all those things that have come to define us ...

James Herriot Collection
Years ago, after reading the books, I never missed an episode of the NPR sponsered TV program on Channel 6 in Sacramento, CA. In the early '90's, my son (USAF) and family were sent to England and my husband and I had the wonderful opportunity to visit there and actually toured the Yorkshire dales and countryside. We were able to visit the real home of this wonderful veterinarian and the one ...

A Gorgeous Book
This is a great example of a living book. The stories transport the listener to another place, and the journey is a pleasure. My 5 and 8 year old daughters love these stories and their illustrations.

All Emotions Great and Small
Since I want to become a vet, I thought that this would be a great book to read. From the first sentence to the last I was enthralled. The words James Herriot uses in his books make you feel like you are standing right beside him when he is talking. This book will make you literally laugh out loud and also will make you cry. The story in this book is not one easily forgotten.

Heartwarming Story
Not having been familiar with the work of James Herriot before this book, I was happily surprised when I read this to my little cat-loving daughter this christmas season. This is a touching story which brought us both to tears, but gave a joyful smile as we reached the end of the story. Truly a story to be shared with every child at christmas!

Definitely a classic
The third book in the series and you know exactly what to expect. Yes, folks, it is every bit as entertaining as the first two, and that's probably all you need to know. But I'll go ahead and mention that he spends some time in the RAF during World War II, which we knew he would as the second book ended. I'll also mention that he and Helen have a baby, which you probably expected. One of the ...

Lovely
This is a feel-good book - the sort of book that gives you that warm-and-fuzzy-feeling' - the sort of book that convinces you that there is still hope for this sad-world-of-ours. I make it a point to read this book at least once a year. James Herriot is successful not because of the beauty of his sentences or the brilliance of his plot, but for the warmth he radiates. He handles the humourous and ...

Absolutely delightful, sorry when I had finished all three...
I can't add much more than the previous reviews. How many books on Amazon have a 5 star rating with 100+ reviews? Missed this one during school and read all three of Herriot's books in my 40's. Truly lovely, wise, and transporting. I will make sure my children don't wait as long as I did to discover these classics.

BEGUILING BEDTIME STORIES FOR CHILDREN & THEIR PARENTS
This is a marvelous audio collection of stories: the idiosyncratic, wry, touching tales of the country vet, lyrically read by one of his countrymen. My eight-year-old daughter has chosen this tape every night for a couple of months, to listen to after the lights are out; and half the time I linger with her, to catch the end of one story, the start of another. We both, side-by-side in ...

A book that every dog lover should read at least once!!
This book had me bursting out in laughter, some of the accounts are simply hilarious!! And other times, it's so heartwarming that I start to sniffle a bit... wow, talk about an emotional roller-coaster. Then again, I go through the same thing whenever I watch the Animal Planet channel. Seriously though, besides being a great joy to read this book also contains a wealth of tips and information on ...

Everything "Great" (and sometimes small)
If you ever wanted to be a vet... "All Creatures Great and Small" will either inspire, or send you running off to be a lawyer. Heartwarming, funny, sad and highly educational, James Herriot's debut biography (he wrote five in all) give readers the whole messy, glorious picture of being a 1940s country veterinarian. The book opens (after a brief chapter taking place several months later) with ...

Blossom makes an impression
This is a wonderful book. In James Herriot's usual heart-warming fashion, he tells the tale of a farmer's loyalty and fondness for his oldest cow. I began reading it to my son when he was two. I often cannot make it through the book without crying, and I have to explain that my tears are tears of joy. Very useful in discussing compassion concerning human relationships with non-human animals.

Reviewing The Lord God Made Them All
I ordered the audio version, which I really enjoyed listening to, especially with British (Yorkshire) accent of the actor. I have always enjoyed the James Herriot books, except for his free use of profanity. Otherwise, it was very enjoyable listening.

Tender-hearted peak at the past
We bought this for our niece. The stories are heart-warming, but also sometimes realistically heart-breaking. I think it'll help any child develop sympathy and respect for other animals, plus city kids will get a glimpse of farm life. We had read the comments about it being hard to read and understand, so my fiance read me a story from it before we wrapped it up and sent it out. We did get ...
