Why did they fight? The title says it all......
...well almost. In 'For Cause & Comrades' James McPherson has set out to explain exactly why the average soldier sacrificed so much for his respective cause in the American Civil War. He has succeeded in convincing me. As the backbone of his thesis, McPherson has used hundreds of letters and diary entries from both Confederate and Union soldiers that offer some glaring insight into their ...

Second to None
McPherson's work here is quite comprehensive, notwithstanding The Battle Cry of Freedom, and quite detailed which makes it exactly the right text of choice for a Civil War classroom. The maps, charts, and photographs show without crowding the material the nature of the battles and campaigns the Union and Confederacy fought against each other. The photographs include gems that drive the ravaging, ...

The Best Got Better
I read 'Battle Cry of Freedom' some time back and decided then that it was the best one volumn authority on the Civil War ever written. My paperback copy is extremely worn and has underlines, my comments, etc. throughout. A good friend bought 'The Illustrated Battle Cry of Freedom' for me and I have just been elated with it. It is one of the most treasured books in my extensive war collection. ...

How Lincoln changed the United States...
This thin book which contains series of essays on how Abraham Lincoln revolutionized our nation during one of the most important periods of our nation proves to be well written and amazingly easy to understand. James McPherson writes clearly how the American Civil War was truly a revolutionary moment in our nation's history and how Lincoln took steps to ensure these changes. How we lived, our ...

Shorter McPherson, but still terrific research and contextually sound
Crossroads of Freedom, by James M. McPherson, does a superb job in its goal of discussing how the Battle of Antietam was a turning point in the American Civil War. McPherson, our pre-eminent historian on the Civil War era, writes clearly and concisely and is very successful in the goals set forth by the author and fellow editor of the Pivotal Moments in American History Series, David Hackett ...

A PRESIDENTIAL TREASURE TROVE
I absolutely adored this book. I have long been fascinated by the nature and character of the men who held the office of President. Each of the mini-biographies sheds new light on the manner in which each of our Presidents approached and executed the powers of the Presidency. Fascinating pieces of Presidential trivia can also be found in this marvelous work. I loved it!

Things a Gettysburgian learned about the battle from this book
James McPherson estimates that he's conducted dozens of on-site tours of the Gettysburg battlefield. This little book is a written tour. Concise, eloquent, and knowledgeable, it's a true delight to read. I've lived in Gburg for a quarter of a century now, and I know the battlefield pretty well. Even so, McPherson taught me a few new things (besides increasing my overall tactical comprehension ...

James McPherson, a bestselling historian of the Civil War, illuminates how Lincoln worked with—and often against— his senior commanders to defeat the Confederacy and create the role of commander in chief as we know it . Though Abraham Lincoln arrived at the White House with no previous military experience (apart from a couple of months spent soldiering in 1832), he quickly established himself as the greatest commander in chief in American ...
