The Three Snow Bears 18 reviews
Putnam Juvenile, 2007
The Three Snow Bears As a Kindergarten teacher I relish a new great book to use with my students at school. This is a wonderful, artistic, multicultural adaptation of the original Three Bears folktail. Thoroughly enjoyed by the kids, as well as, myself. Jan Brett's illustrations keep you coming back fora closer examination as her borders are rich and give clues to what's happening next and while the story moves ...

Berlioz the Bear 7 reviews Jan Brett
Putnam Juvenile, 1996
Another Jan Brett Favourite My 5 year-old daughter loves this book. Not only are the illustrations fascinating and detailed as in all of Brett's books, but the story is very charming and funny. The surprise ending will make you and your child giggle for certain.

Annie and the Wild Animals 10 reviews Jan Brett
Houghton Mifflin, 1989
A Must Read If I had to choose just one of Jan Brett's stories, this is the one I would pick. The frames around the illustrations include small pictures of the upcoming plot.
The story is interesting, the illustrations are rich and detailed, and the hints increase the interest factor for the adults reading the text to children.

Goldilocks and the Three Bears 12 reviews Jan Brett
Putnam Juvenile, 1996
Magical Ilustrations This book has beautiful, magical, fantastical pictures with Jan Brett's typical detail and whimsy. The bear's house is extraordinary. I think it is one of her very best books and goes well with the old-fashioned text. No other version of this story compares.

The Umbrella 8 reviews
Putnam Juvenile, 2004
No snow or trolls, but the jungle is just as beautiful Jan Brett remains number 1 on my list of modern children's book illustrators. The story is good, too, but the pictures are....what can I say.... just great.

Gingerbread Baby 29 reviews Jan Brett
Putnam Juvenile, 1999
Yummy Gingerbread What a wonderful book! The illustrations are breathtakingly georgous and intricately detailed as is typical of all Jan Brett's books. The story of the Gingerbread Baby is a surprising and delightful retelling of the classic story. My children and I loved this book!

Town Mouse, Country Mouse 11 reviews
Putnam Juvenile, 2003
ONE OF THE BETTER VERSIONS OF THIS OLD, OLD STORY! As near as we can tell, Aesop's Fables date back to at least the 6th Century B.C. I personally feel that many of these tales are even older and Aesop had probably recorded quite a number of old folk tales from the past. Be-that-as-it-may, this is a rewrite of one of my favorite of Aesop's Fables. This story has been told and retold in countless languages, in countless countries and it would be ...

Fritz and the Beautiful Horses (Sandpiper Books) 15 reviews Jan Brett
Houghton Mifflin, 1987
Fritz and the Beautiful Horses is great. Everyone should read it! Once long ago there was a walled city known for its beautiful horses, and so a law was passed out that only the most beautiful were allowed in the city, not even a scruffy pony who very much wanted to look and be grand. Suddenly, the bridge breaks. Will Fritz be able to save the children? The plot is colorful and imaginative. The setting is just outside the walled city with ponds, fields, and ...

Armadillo Rodeo 7 reviews
Puffin, 2004
The book I have the most fun reading aloud to my 7-year old! My sister, a nearby neighbor of Jan Brett's, discovered this book and sent it to my then 5-year old son for his birthday. Bo's nearsighted adventures entertain; and his being lost and not knowing he's lost delights my son. Most children will envy Bo's adventure to the rodeo and understand his curioisity. Having developed quite the Texas "accent and attitude" while reading this book, it's at ...

Hedgie Blasts Off! 6 reviews
Putnam Juvenile, 2006
Charming Read! Hedgie Blasts off is a cute book about Hedgie the hedgehog, whose greatest dream is becoming an Astronaut. Currently Hediei works on the clean-up crew for Star Lab (run by a dog Professor who is in charge of Outer Space no less). As we join the story The Professor is telling Hedgie to call in all the scientists, they've got a problem with the Big Sparkler and they MUST do something about it ...

Happy Birthday, Dear Duck 2 reviews Jan Brett, Eve Bunting
Clarion Books, 1990
Just Ducky! Duck celebrates his birthday with animal friends in this beautifully illustrated book for younger children (from about age one to five). The animals bring him gifts: "Duck got a ball that was pumped full of air. And a scuba mask, and a watch to wear And suntan oil to rub on his beak So it wouldn't burn and it wouldn't squeak." The problem is that most of the toys are for water play, and Duck and ...

On Noah's Ark 9 reviews
Putnam Juvenile, 2003
Lovely book for church libraries This is another lovely book by Jan Brett. The artwork is wonderful and the text is from the viewpoint of Noah's grandson. I bought this for our church library and am glad I did. I also suggest "Naamah: The Story of Noah's Wife" by Sandy Eisenberg Sasso for little girls. It stresses Naamah's job in preserving seeds and plants for use after the flood, and makes the Noah story less of a "men did ...

The Owl and the Pussycat 24 reviews Edward Lear
Putnam Juvenile, 1996
Wonderful Story I have the Audio CD that Eric Idle did and it was wonderful. I listened to it with my 5 year-old and we both just loved it. He could understand most of what was going on and I could explain the rest. I'll start looking for other versions, too. Like the original poem and the various hardcover book versions. It is a truly charming story with a playful use of words. There is humor of the best kind ...

Daisy Comes Home 8 reviews
Puffin, 2005
a very "real" story My 5-year-old daughter and I read this with a great deal of delight. The story is exciting, and what makes it very special is its authenticity. Daisy isn't a human-like character, she does only real hen things; Mei Mei isn't a super-clever, cutesy ethnic character, she's a young Chinese girl who loves her hens. Together, they overcome the scary, vulnerable situations they find themselves in just ...

The Wild Christmas Reindeer 6 reviews Jan Brett
Putnam Juvenile, 1998
Beautiful pictures full of color and detail. Great story. My 5 year old daughter brought this book home from Kindergarten one day. We read it at bedtime and were both amazed at the wonderful illustrations. Any child who loves animals will enjoy this book. It also has a nice change from the normal Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen thing. These reindeer have more interesting North Pole sort of names. We loved it!
