Jim Murphy

Clarion Books, 2003

Riveting and Terrifying History
This dramatic account of the Yellow Fever Epidemic of 1793 is riveting. It is packed with historical facts and presents the horror of the disease, the implications for the city of Philadelphia and neighboring areas, and the reaction of both the townspeople as well as those in power with vivid detail. Politicians, the medical community, common people, orphans, the poor are all brought to life ...

Across America on an Emigrant Train3 reviews
Jim Murphy

Clarion Books, 1993

Excellent book
This is a short easy and fun history book that blends excerpts Robert Louis Stevenson's "Amateur Emigrant" and "Across the Plains" with Jim Murphy's prose and descriptions. I was expecting a kids book but far from it - while not academic or even pretentiously so, it's on par with a PBS episode of "American Experience" and reminds me of how fun history can be. The historical photo's are excellent, ...

A Young Patriot: The American Revolution as Experienced by One Boy3 reviews
Jim Murphy

Clarion Books, 1998

This is a great book!
I'm 12 years-old and I thought this story was very exciting. My older brother read it also, and he said it was great. It is about a fifteen-year-old boy who is eager to go to war. However, it ends up being the most horrifying life a young man could have. I would give six stars if I could. Since I can't, I'll write it down: six stars!

The Boys' War: Confederate and Union Soldiers Talk About the Civil War4 reviews
Jim Murphy

Clarion Books, 1993

Wonderful intro to young soldiers lives in the Civil War
Read this aloud with my children about 2 years ago. It sparked my son's interest in Civil War historical fiction. He is not an avid reader, but has read several civil war books including "Red Cap" by Clifton Wisler and just picked up "Across Five Aprils" for his sixth-grade historical fiction assignment. Jim Murphy is a fine writer, weaving quotes, diary entries and anecdotes into a lucent and ...

The Real Benedict Arnold2 reviews
Jim Murphy

Clarion Books, 2007

Vivid picture of a much-maligned, complex hero
I don't think I've had such strong feelings about a biography since I read Kitty Kelly's The Bush Dynasty, but for exactly opposite reasons. Murphy's meticulously produced biography of Arnold gives us a vivid picture of a much- maligned, complex hero. This book also reveals much about the tenor of the times: an unruly, chaotic congress, disintegrating militia, and few true patriots. ...

The Great Fire17 reviews
Jim Murphy

Scholastic Paperbacks, 2006

The Great Fire Review
In the book The Great Fire the author gives you a lot of amazing facts, pictures, and he lets you see what is going through four main character's eyes. One of the amazing facts this book gives you is that the people who told the fire engines what place to go, miscalculated it three times, and sent the fire engines in wrong directions. One of the great pictures they give you is a lady on ...

The Journal of James Edmond Pease a Civil War Union Soldier (My Name is America)2 reviews
Murphy Jim

Scholastic, Inc., 2002

Nice Children's intro to History
James Pease may have been a young man living more than a century ago, but Jim Murphy does a great job of allowing a modern audience to glimpse into life in that tumultuous time through the eyes of one simple young soldier who I consider an endearing literary character. Pease is no abolitionist, just your average teenager trying to survive the bloodiest conflict in American history, the Civil ...

Blizzard: The Storm That Changed America4 reviews
Jim Murphy

Scholastic, 2000

An insightful, lively account of another "perfect" storm.
Acclaimed historian Murphy shows how a devastating 1888 blizzard not only shut down our northeastern states for days, but radically altered the way Americans live; its repercussions are being felt even today. He illustrates how political corruption, ineptitude, and contemporary social attitudes exacerbated the storm's fallout. Using carefully chosen excerpts from survivors' personal accounts, he ...

Dugout Wisdom: The Ten Principles of Championship Teams4 reviews
Jim Murphy

Coaches Choice Books, 2003

Dugout Wisdom transcends sports to the business world.
The amount of quality managers and coaches he interviewed is outstanding, and putting it all together with the ten principles really clarified for me what the top managers do. As a business professional I feel I can transfer much of these principles into my life, because we're all dealing with people, whether it's sports or business. I really liked the chapter on Forming a Covenant, and having ...

Inside The Alamo4 reviews
Jim Murphy

Delacorte Books for Young Readers, 2003

HISTORY COMES ALIVE
The Washington Post was right in saying that no one does non-fiction better than Jim Murphy. The story of the Alamo is one that I passed over in history books. I felt this was an appauling gap. Jim Murphy's book is fascinating and riveting -- as well as beautiful. We have made this a family project to read this extraordinary story. It's a lesson in the making of myth and legend as well as ...

The Journal Of Brian Doyle: Greenhorn on an Alaskan Whaling ShipThe, Florence, 1874 (My Name Is America),3 reviews
Jim Murphy

Scholastic Inc., 2004

WHAT AN EXCITING ADVENTURE
Wow. I just got through reading this book. It was great! Brian Doyle is a great charaacter -- a kid running from his father -- who has no idea what he's signed up for when he ends up on a whaling ship. He has no idea how hard and challenging his life will become. Or how he will change by the time his incredible adventure is over. I think this is one of the best books in the series. I love ...

Gone A-Whaling: The Lure of the Sea and the Hunt for the Great Whale1 review
Jim Murphy

Clarion Books, 2004

Wonderful reading
I've been reading one chapter a night to my eight year old, and he and I have both loved this book. It discusses the history of whaling, from early humans through modern times. Whenever possible, the author quotes primary sources, including the writings of "cabin boys", the young all-around helpers who served on whaleships. This youthful perspective keeps even an eight year old interested. ...

The Red Badge of Courage (Aladdin Classics)1 review
Stephen Crane

Aladdin, 2005

All Quiet on the Rappahannock
Henry Fleming, a young soldier, had enlisted. Camp life proved monotonous. He was drilled. He had a serious problem. He was afraid he would run from battle. The amusement of an attempted horse theft caused the entire regiment to forget its own large war. A loud soldier told Henry he wouldn't run, he would do his share of fighting. The men marched and the regiment lost its newness. Still ...

The Boys' War: Confederate and Union Soldiers Talk About the Civil War1 review
Jim Murphy

Scholastic Inc, 1990

The Boys' War
Thousands of boys fought in the Civil War, kids from 12 to 16, fighting with, and against, grown men. Some went to war over slavery; some went to protect their families. Many didn't even know the reasons; they just wanted an adventure, a reason to escape boredom. This is the story of those boys. Based on diary entries and letters, The Boys' War tells all about their war: Why they joined, what ...
