Stand Tall (r/i)22 reviews
Joan Bauer

Puffin, 2005

Review by Mirit
Stand tall! Standing tall is a metaphor for sticking up for yourself and not letting things such as words hurt you. This book Stand Tall has an amazing message. It shows what happens when people are self-conscious. Then at the same time it shows how the area that you're self-conscious about is a positive feature. It also shows that if you let words or actions get to you then you'll never be ...

A Great Book for Sharing
I used selections from this collection as read-alouds for my 8th grade language arts class (I end class most days with a read-aloud, while students keep a response journal). Because of the subject matter, these stories definitely engage the students and keep their attention. Do they all "get" the message? No, but I guarantee that when you look around the room and see the eyes of those two or ...

Best Foot Forward7 reviews
Joan Bauer

Puffin, 2006

Courtesy of Teens Read Too
She did it again! Joan Bauer hooked me on yet another novel about selling shoes! I had previously read Rules of the Road, where we were introduced to Jenna Boller. In BEST FOOT FORWARD we again root for Jenna of Gladstone Shoes. I even *ahem* took this book to church to read between Sunday School and the church service. It was that good. Mrs. Gladstone puts Jenna in charge of Tanner, a boy ...

Wonderful
This is a unique and very entertaining book for juveniles--especially young girls would like this. I like this because it is a story about a farm girl in Iowa--something that young girls don't get exposed to very often these days, and it's so nice to have a young female heroine whose noble goal is to grow a giant pumpkin rather than some superficial nonsense. Funny and real.

Crisp and juicy!
There is nothing more that sixteen-year-old Banesville High School junior, Hildy Biddle, wants, than to be a serious, hard-hitting journalist. Someone who breaks the big news before anyone else. Interviews countless people on a quest for an unsuspected scoop. But, as much as Hildy loves her hometown of Banesville, New York, the little apple harvesting town can't exactly be called a hotspot for ...

Hope Was Here3 reviews

First Scholastic Printing, 2001

"Hope Was Here" is an awesome book!
"Hope Was Here" is a great book for anyone looking for an easier summer read. I have read it twice for pleasure, once for a book report, and once for a newspaper review, and I'm still not bored! It accurately portrays how a teenager must adapt to change and new ways of life nearly everyday. The reactions of the main character, Hope, are very realistic. There's a fair amount of characters, but ...

Strong Characters
Jenna doesn't do well in school, and she isn't happy with the fact that she is so tall. Her little sister is the beautiful one in the family. Jenna does have one talent, though. She is excellent at selling. Specifically, she is excellent at selling shoes, which is her part-time job. She loves working at Gladstone's shoe store, a store that prizes quality service and quality products. This ...

Black Sheep
Ivy's entire huge extended family seems to be made up of loud lawyers. Her father and her uncle and, it seems, everyone else of any importance in the Breedlove clan, are lawyers. Ivy often feels out of place; she doesn't want to be a lawyer. She doesn't like to shout or argue, and she certainly doesn't feel like going to law school, despite the brochures her father keeps leaving around in her ...

The Development of the Mediated Mind: Sociocultural Context and Cognitive Development

Lawrence Erlbaum, 2004

This volume is a festschrift for Katherine Nelson, an NYU professor who was a pioneer in infant perception and memory. The "mediated mind" is a term coined by Dr. Nelson and it refers to how cognitive development is mediated by the sociocultural context, including language and social interaction. The impact of Nelson's views on the sociocultural basis of cognition and her functionalist perspective on cognitive development are evident in the ...
