The Fruitful Darkness: A Journey Through Buddhist Practice and Tribal Wisdom2 reviews
Joan Halifax

Grove Press, 2004

One of the best books I have ever read
(and I have read a lot of books!) I am on my second reading, and will soon reread a third time, slowly, taking notes and making my own commentary. Halifax's ability to combine a deep understanding of Buddhism, shamanism, deep ecology, the history of civilization, indigenous cultures is unparalleled - and her understanding is not academic, it has been gained through forty-plus years of experience. ...

Healthy, clear, concise guidance, including reflective meditation to care for those who are dying. At the same time in developing compassion and fearlessness to face the dying, it concurrently provides a guide for healthy living. Who knows what is most important in life? Those who deny it and live on in ignorant bliss, or those for whom it is already knocking on their door.

Being with Dying
Joan Halifax

Sounds True, 1997

On his deathbed, Plato was asked to summarize his life's work. He replied: "Practice dying." In the 2,000 years since Plato offered this wise admonition, we have developed many practices associated with living. But what of the practices associated with dying? Being with Dying is a response to this question: an approach to death that is kind, open, and dignified, and that allows us to explore the meaning of death in the experience of our own ...

The Fruitful Darkness: Reconnecting With the Body of the Earth1 review
Joan Halifax

HarperCollins Publishers, 1994

Amazing
It is amazing that this book has never been reviewed (2006). I bought the hardback in 1993 and I still consider it one of my most favorite books ever. It is thoughtful and very well written. It gave me a very good introduction to deep ecology and shamanism. I consider it a must read for those interested in the subject.

Buddhist Acts of Compassion6 reviews
Pamela Bloom

Conari Press, 2000

Wonderful book
I have been on the Buddhist path for more than a year now, with many breaks in my journey! For some reason this book struck a nerve, clicked for me. Really just a collection of stories or examples of Bhuddhist compassion, many of them have rung true for me, really opened an understanding for me in ways some other books have not. Were those other books required to lay the groundwork for my ...

For a Future to Be Possible: Commentaries on the Five Mindfulness Trainings2 reviews
Thich Nhat Hanh, Jack Kornfield, ...

Parallax Press, 1998

Excellent guide to implement precepts into daily life
Thich Nhat Hanh has updated the traditional Buddhist precepts in this book. His version goes beyond "do not kill," for example, to be mindful of that we might be killing inadvertently. He makes us aware of the broadness of the precepts and thus encourages us to be more mindful. If we are not mindful, we break the precepts. Therefore, he calls them Mindfulness Trainings. Thay's approach frames ...
