My French Kitchen: A Book of 120 Treasured Recipes7 reviews
Joanne Harris, Fran Warde

William Morrow Cookbooks, 2006

The flourless chocolate cake is superb!!!
This book is beautiful. You'll love looking at the photographs. But, what you will love more, especially if you love the combination of chocolate and nuts, is the "Gateau Charles", which is a flourless chocolate cake. I bake this cake [at least] once a week, for I like to eat a slice, daily. The cake is easy to prepare. (The recipe calls for the use of 70% chocolate. My suggestion, if ...

Gentlemen and Players: A Novel (P.S.)12 reviews
Joanne Harris

Harper Perennial, 2007

A literary masterpiece
If I could I would give this book 10 stars!!!! I was intrigued by the storyline of this book; someone trying to undermind the teachers and students of this elite school. This novel was much more than that. I loved how the author roped you into this story with her beautiful words. I compared this book to The Talented Mr. Ripley on how someone becomes another person just to undermind those ...

A Dreamy Drug of a Book!
I bought this book on the advice of a member of my Tarot group. She said that there were several instances of Tarot readings and such. I'm very grateful that she recommended it because it was a fabulous read! "Sleep, Pale Sister" is a dreamy drug of a book, an ethereally written Gothic sort of ghost story that had me enthralled for several late nights. Magic, Tarot readings and a nice touch ...

Chocolat207 reviews

Penguin (Non-Classics), 2000

Perfection
Quiet, magical, beautiful, enchanting. I have rarely read a book so touching as this one. The characters and settings are so real and tangible, that one can feel the cold nip of the bitter wind and (far more welcoming) the warm scents and allure of the beckoning chocolate shop...What more can I say that hasn't already been said here, and better? Pick up a copy today and lose yourself in Chocolat.

shockingly good
I love this book. She has such a unique and lyrical manner of writing. Highly recommend it. Plus it's got a discussion section in this edition.

The Girl with No Shadow6 reviews
Joanne Harris

William Morrow, 2008

Good Sequel
Generally, sequels are not as good as the original. At the beginning, I thought this text would follow that pattern, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised. The one thing that nagged me though, is that sometimes I felt the way it was written, or the environment it was written in was so different from Chocoalat. However, it ended up working quite well for the text.

What If the Prophecies Were Wrong? (TeenReads)
Maddy is as outcast as they come. In a Norse culture that views magic as evil and labels darkskinned folks as Outlanders, being born an orphan girl with a ruin-mark on your palm is just about the worst way to start things off. Infants and animals are often killed for such offenses, and even far from the reach of the Universal City in the village of Malbry, people still hide such signs. It doesn't ...

Chocolat9 reviews

Black Swan, 2000

Magically Delicious!
Years after seeing Chocolat the movie, I have finally read Chocolat the book. As usual, the book was way better than the movie. While Chocolat the movie implies that Vianne is a witch, the book makes it abundantly clear that Vianne has magical powers. She turns the small French town on its head when she opens a chocolate shop. The book focuses much more on the issue of Lent and giving up ...

The French Market: More Recipes from a French Kitchen1 review
Joanne Harris, Fran Warde

William Morrow Cookbooks, 2006

Fantastic!
This is a fabulous book for anyone interested in fresh French cooking. The recipes are simple and appealing, with most of the required ingredients being easy to locate. Lush color photographs throughout will help to whet your appetite. I've only made two of the soups so far, The Good Wife's Soup and Cauliflower Soup, both of which were divine and very easy and quick to make. The first was a sort ...

Food and tragedy - worth reading
I really loved this book. The protagonist is Framboise, an old woman who is telling us the story of one monumental event in her life. As young girl growing up in the French countryside during World War II, Framboise had a poisoned relationship with her single mother, Mirabelle. Framboise's father has already been killed in the war, and the little family is struggling to establish a new dynamic ...

"The past is a sly sickness."
Circa 1610, the rocky shore of Brittany houses the dilapidated abbey of Saine-Marie-de-la-Mer, the nuns having made restive peace with their uncompromising land, barely eking out their meager sustenance. One of the newer sisters, Soeur Auguste, lives quietly at the abbey with her five-year-old daughter, Fleur. Formerly known as Juliette, a player with a gypsy caravan of traveling performers, ...

Blackberry Wine: A Novel57 reviews

Harper Perennial, 2001

Cooking, Gardens, France - Say No More!
Half-English, half-French writer Joanne Harris is best known for writing the best-selling novel CHOCOLAT, which is a decadent treat, but her follow-up novel BLACKBERRY WINE is even more magical and showcases the love of land and gardens of both heritages. Reclusive writer Jay Mackintosh is stuck in adolescence until he invokes the memories of an elderly gardener and astral traveler who helped ...

Sands of change.
COASTLINERS, by Joanne Harris. Once again, Joanne Harris takes us to a small French community. This time, on Le Devin a small Breton Island. She introduces us to several inhabitants of this island, where life has remained constant for hundreds of years. Two memorable characters, are the Carmelite nuns, Soeur Therese and Soeur Extase. Their role in the story is a small one. Yet, as with so ...

Another Sweet Treat
While in France last week I discovered The Lollipop Shoes in a book store and read the first two lines on the back cover. Not only was I hooked, I couldn't get the euros out of my pocket fast enough. This is the sequel to Chocolat (one of my favorite novels) and picks up four years after the last story ends. While it is told in the first person from 3 different people I did not find it ...

The French Kitchen: a Cook Book~Joanne Harris; Fran Warde1 review
Joanne Harris; Fran Warde

Doubleday UK, 2002

One of my favourite cookbooks.
As an inveterate buyer, reader and user of cookbooks I found this book one of the best that I've recently used. Living as I do in Australia, it was released here for the Christmas season of '02 and was not at the time available for comment through Amazon so I was pleased to see it listed today when I had a check. It is a first-rate cookbook and I'm sure those that use it's recipes will be happy ...

Jigs & Reels: Stories (P.S.)9 reviews

Harper Perennial, 2006

Fantastical!
The stories in this book cover a wide range of subjects and styles, as others have noted. But all -- both the realistic and the magical stories -- are written with a magic touch. Some are darkly funny, some just plain dark, some are quirky, and some are sweet. All of them speak to the soul in some way. Here are just a few examples: two women from a nursing home help each other bust out to ...
