MUSICAGE: CAGE MUSES on Words * Art * Music4 reviews
John Cage, Joan Retallack

Wesleyan, 1996

Charming, delightful, thought-provoking
I know nothing about music, but I loved this book! Cage's conversations brim with humor, wisdom, and amazing insights into every subject under the sun. It's an enormous pleasure to spend a few hours "in his company" by reading this book.

Empty Words1 review
John CAGE

Wesleyan Univ. Press, 1981

The Great mind of John Cage!
If you are familiar with John Cage's thinking you will enjoy and understand this book as well as his other numerous writings, and fantastic music. If you are new to Cage's work, well, be patient and try to follow. Perhaps some previous reading of his poetry and writings will guide you more towards this book. I am a fan and admirer of Cage's work, so I loved it.

Edition Peters1 review
John Cage

s.n, 1960

virtual encyclopedia of piano timbres,graphic
by all means if you are a lover of the graphic sign, graphic signifier, musical notation, this was the first large work of the American avant-garde that virtually contains any and all graphic notation,schemes/means,agendas,approaches,excursis that the avant-garde came to utilize, I can only think ofthe late Cornelius Cardew and Sylvano Bussoti whose work even approaches the conceptual depth(s) ...

I-VI (The Charles Eliot Norton Lectures)1 review
John Cage

Harvard University Press, 1981

peRformAnce coMbusTiOns of fragments,WoRdS
The various books, collections of pieces, essays, mesostics, cooking recipes, concert reports and performance works Cage had published throughout his long life have for many been more important than his music. (Cage never claimed) to have written music only/merely creating a more intense/extense hearing situation. He (himself when queried said) he never listens to music, recordings, but the sounds ...

M1 review
John Cage

Marion Boyars Publishers Ltd, 1976

M by John Cage
I read this book many years ago and do not know if it is even still in print. I saw that no-one had reviewed it and felt duty bound to add my little bit in the hope it might persuade someone else to go to the trouble of seeking out this book. It is one of THOSE books, a true giant of a thing - not just for the ideas and insights it contains but for the wonderful way that it is written. Cage's ...

Radio happenings I-V1 review
John Cage

MusikTexte, 1993

one of the best.
this is really just transcripts of radio conversations between morton feldman and john cage in the 60's, not intended for publication. however, it may be because of that that it is so amazing. much is written about the friendship between cage and feldman, but here you get a glimpse of their relationship in action, shedding light on both the men and their music. a must read. (still available ...

Dianne II: Cook & Tell1 review
Dianne Cage

Garden District Books, 2005

Cooking Good
I have Dianne's first cookbook, "Cooking and Gardening with Dianne," use it as a cooking "Bible" and have bought it for several friends. So, couldn't wait to purchase "Dianne II" and have already been pleased with all I have prepared: the Wassail, yes, the Wassail, was a big hit at a Winter Solstice party I threw in December ; her "Lemon Pie in the Sky" is so good my mouth waters just to think ...

Cage - Cunningham - Johns Dancers on a Plane1 review
John Cage, Merce Cunningham, ...

Thames & Hudson, 1999

Good stuff
A very good book. I used it for a research paper on the New York School and Abstract Expressionism. I focused on Cage, so I didn't read the whole book, but if it is as good as the section on Cage, I'd say it's a very good book.

Aria, voice (any range)1 review
John Cage

C.F. Peters, 1960

wonderful ride for a singer or a voice.
if you are vocalist and need some distraction(s), or something fascinating to work on that will test your own creative abilities, that will test your ability to make music from a concept with a slightest of pitch indications given, this is a piece for you. If you need to hide behind an accompnaiment, especially if this is your first time performing John Cage's graphic notational works Cage allows ...

Notations1 review

Reprint Services Corp, 1973

it's just black dotes,circles on a page
if it is possible for a composer to have a signature, then it is possible to be able to recognize the "voice", the "timbral signature" of a composer from what you see on the page, like a DNA configuration, you are what you are for what you become "magnetize" towards, some shape in music, genre, patterns, listening to telephone generators, or simply making money, lots of it,And if one comprehends ...

A Year from Monday2 reviews
John Cage

Marion Boyars Publishers, 1985

or: today(?)
Yes. The second collection of John Cage's writings to appear (after Silence), A year From Monday is indispensable to anyone wishing to have more than a passing understanding of Cage's work and thought. In usual Cage fashion, the lectures, essays, "diaries," anecdotes, and assorted miscellanea jump off the page - utilizing an increasingly diverse array of typefaces and sizes, the writings ...

Mud Book2 reviews
John Cage, Lois Long

Harry N Abrams, 1988

Mud Pies are to make and to look at, not to eat.
Contrary to what the editorial review says, this is not a "good-natured satire". This book is both a serious and fun guide for making mud cakes and pies. Everybody can do it! The fact that the result might not be edible does not detract from the value of this little book. The illustrations are great, and the language is suited both for children and adults. If you have ever read Walter DeMaria's ...

Anarchy2 reviews
John Cage, 2001

anarchic seems every bit more escapist, self-indulgent
John Cage was never an activist,at least not one that had tangible results toward change. His work remains amongst/ within the safe, complaisant corridors of escapist realms. He encouraged throughout his life, gently, cadre's of creators, all brilliant, provocative, interesting, and thought provoking, with a utopian flair to change the world. But to change what? Yet there is a grotesquely large gulf ...

John Cage: Documentary Monographs in Modern Art1 review
Richard Kostelanetz, John Cage

Praeger, 1970

Sadly tedious
It is difficult to describe how disappointing this book is or why the information is presented in such a repititious way. It appears to be a blend of interviews from many previous sources (including the author's) and this makes for a confusing read. When answers to specific questions about the performances of Cage's music include different recollections from various interviews within the same ...

Silence: Lectures and Writings8 reviews
John Cage

The MIT Press, 1966

Nothing Has Been The Same
It's always a strange sensation for me to go into a record store, or even see what's available here, and find so many John Cage recordings in print. As the most essential and avant-garde composer of the century, that's gratifying to me [a composer] but also unnerving that anyone so experimental and uncompromising in the arts would enjoy such popularity. This book goes a long way towards ...
