Economic history is educational and interesting
Ten years' worth of writing, these forty-seven essays capture illumuniating anecdotes about economic history, captured in the stories of people, ideas and moments in time. Booms and depressions, clever inventions and failed plans, tough competitors and grandoise government schemes all receive their due. There is the story of King Cotton and how the gin made it profitable. Gordon reports on the ...

Best book value I know.
It's hard to believe how many of the best poems in English are in this thin little book -- ninety poems for a dollar. I second the action of the Poetry Project in giving it free to lots of people. Buy one for your glove compartment, your office, your study, and your best reader friend!

A fun and lively story of Wall Street
I read this book before I went to my MBA program. This was a fun introduction to history of Wall Street. It helped me put the financial world into perspective--and it helped me appreciate the power and influence Wall Street has had on our country.

From tobacco to the Internet, the unstoppable American economy
This book is a one volume "epic history of American economic power" that focuses on the fantastic capacity of the United States as a machine to create wealth (if not to redistribute it); its approach is surprisingly similar to what a 19th century bourgeois apologist might have chosen, that of a believer in a vision of "progress" that would now appear old fashioned and naive, especially to the ...

It reads like the man talks
I might be considered to have a bias because I know the author, but hear me out. When reading the book, I know the words are heartfelt and sincere because it reads just how John would talk, if he was standing there relating the stories in person. It's billed as a Christian book, but I think it's more a book about how to live a full life, properly and with grace. For those who are turned off by ...

Legally mandated nurse-to-patient ratios are one of the most controversial topics in health care today. Ratio advocates believe that minimum staffing levels are essential for quality care, better working conditions, and higher rates of RN recruitment and retention that would alleviate the current global nursing shortage. Opponents claim that ratios will unfairly burden hospital budgets, while reducing management flexibility in addressing patient ...

A little niche of history that changed the world
It's hard to imagine how different life was for people living in the 19th century after the successful laying of the first trans-Atlantic cable. This book tells the story of the laying of that cable and at the same time paints a portrait of Cyrus Field, the entreprenuer who laid the cable, and a period of time when so much about life was changing for inhabitants of the western world. Perhaps no ...

The most comforting thing I have read since losing my son.
I am so glad that my sister brought this book to me. It is one of the most comforting things that I have read since losing my beautiful 35-year old son a year ago. My heart goes out to this family and all the mothers who have lost children through death, and to the siblings who are left to live with a special loss. The feelings expressed in this book were so real to me as they would be for ...

The inextricable link between energy production and reservoir water quality poses an ongoing challenge for civil engineers. Energy production processes can influence reservoir water quality, and reservoir water quality can limit energy production. This book on energy production and reservoir water quality brings together the regulatory framework driving the need for technical evaluations and the details of tools presently available for assessing ...

Great Quick Reference
This is a great quick reference book for clinical practice. Easy to read (despite small print) and to the point information. Another reviewer said this new edition was too big to fit in their pockets; apparently they have really small pockets because I have no trouble putting it in a lab coat. On the other hand, it won't fit in my scrub pockets, so perhaps this is what the reviewer is ...

Not what I expected
This is a very basic book and does not go into any detail. Might be okay for a 7 or 8 year old that knows nothing about golf. There is a very short chapter that touches on the rules of golf and also one on etiquette but these barely scratch the surface. The book is not for a child that has already started playing golf.

A real good book...
This is an excellent book. Gordon may not be as well known as some Confederate Generals, Nevertheless, He was a very good officier and a gentlemen that can discuss the many complex issues with the Battles he was a part of. I strongly suggest that you read this book to learn more about him and his part in the war between the States.
