"See-Through Mummies"
I purchased "See-Through Mummies" for my grandson, aged 8, hoping to stimulate an interest in Egyptology. The book is very readable and has many beautiful and colourful illustrations. The scene is set with the telling of the Osiris story, leading to a very interesting and accurate account of the process of mummification and subsequent burial. The religious beliefs of this fascinating people ...

The Atlas of the Medieval World in Europe (IV-XV Century)
Reminiscent of the Eyewitness Explorers Series, illustrations fill every page in this graphically beautiful series. Short descriptions give a concise eclectic overview of topics. A nice supplement to encyclopedic reference works with broader and more in depth coverage, but which may be lacking in illustrations. Ideal for young or reluctant readers because there are so many pictures calculated to ...

Entertaining, educational and packed with marvelous pictures
All the wonderful machines that fascinate kids are featured in this book -- bulldozers, front-loaders, big shovels, backhoes, etc. -- each explained in a clear and entertaining style. Splendid illustrations fill every page, and are the gems that set this book apart from others, elevating it to the status of a classic. The pictures are chock-full of delightful details -- from little, ...

This 32-page book devotes two-page spreads to a number of topics: the Nile R., village life, children, farming, pyramids, the pharoahs, law, writing, medicine, mummies, the arts, war and mythology. Each spread features several paragraphs of text, lots of pictures, and at least one special feature, such as a ...

Shawn's Review
This book is like you are being told what will happen at gladiator school. That is what makes it funny. Even though it is funny, you learn things. For instance, did you know that you would have to eat barley grains and roasted beans for dinner and ash for dessert? Another reason I like this book is the illustrations. The illustrations also make the book funny because they make the people look ...

Excellent book
I shared this book with my child, a kindergartner. The pages have good text, good drawings and photographs, weblinks on each topic. The book also provided a text box for each topic explaining how modern day people know about the Egyptians called "How Do We Know". I found this especially interesting.

Great graphic adaptation of a classic
My 8 year old is getting into graphic classics this year. He really likes these; he can read one in an afternoon. What's funny though, he can give you at least a Cliff Notes type review (telling me they have hit all the high notes in this very brief graphic version), and it's really sparked his interest in classic literature. Oliver Twist was particularly well done in this series.

Best Dinosaur book of all time
My fiance bought this book for my son (5 at the time) for Christmas 2 years ago. Despite the fact that he got a multitude of other, more expensive presents, it was his favorite book. He was just learning to read (he was halfway through kindergarten), but he read the book obsessively. It went everywhere with him - to school, to bed, to daycare, out to playtime. He literally *loved* the first ...

Titanic (Secret Worlds)
John has done a magnificent job putting this book together! I especially enjoyed the Titanic and Lusitania sections. It provides the reader with other famous shipwrecks as well, creating a well rounded look at how maritime disasters have shaped our culture. As a school teacher I highly highly recommend this title!

Wouldn't buy it
At first glance, it looks like a pretty good book. The cover artwork is nice, and it says it includes creatures other than dinosaurs. Which it does, actually, it has several sections on non-dinosaurian animals. The problem is, the artist who did the cover artwork only did a handful of the illustrations inside the book. A different artist apparently drew all the rest--and they aren't very ...

Flowing With Fun
A lively and entertaining book for readers of any age. My middle school students did not find the material too juvenial and I believe that the approach to a tragic event is gentle enough for younger children. I was impressed by the detail provided about both life in ancient Rome and the science behind the eruption of Vesuvius. Excellent!

Beautiful Book!
It is a shame that (currently, anyway) there is no image available for this book. More than the story, which is a simple tale of a pig who learns he must go to sleep to wake up early in order to enjoy the best parts of the day, the adorable and eye-catching illustrations are what really shine. Every page is beautifully embossed, which adds even more life to the sweet drawings. While it may be ...

A very fun and exciting history lesson
This book was very interesting. It showed what might happen to you if you were captured by Pirates. I thought it was very realistic, and it was so exciting you didn't know you were really learning. I would read it again and again. But I thought it was a little easy to read, and too short. But overall I liked it... a LOT

Prehistoric History
I enjoyed the way the book presented ideas about the Ice Age and its inhabitants in a cartoon format. However, I was looking for a book that was appropraite for 1st graders to read independently this would be a little above them. I think 2nd and 3rd graders would enjoy this book and be able to understand the humor.
